Resting Metabolic Rate Analysis and Nutrition Plan
The RMR test measures precisely how many calories your body requires to keep your metabolism revving and burning calories all day. Consuming less than this minimum number of calories and your metabolism becomes sluggish, going into an idle and conserving every calorie you consume and storing more fat. The RMR calculation will determine the number of calories you need every day to support your activities and address your weight management goals. The RMR test unlocks the secrets of your unique biology and provides the precise data necessary to help you reach your goal weight.

Avoiding Holiday Weight Gain

The key to enjoying the holiday season without ruining your hard work on weight loss, the most important thing is to balance the meals you eat with healthy snacks.

This time of year it is imperative to prevent unnecessary weight gain. I say unnecessary because you can still enjoy holiday meals and festivities if you follow some simple rules of nutrition from my new book, Healthy Running, Step by Step. For over 35 years we have been helping runners with training, nutrition, injury prevention, recovery and, of course, rehabilitation. I find nutrition is the most misunderstood science.

When it comes to nutrition we have found a simple basic approach works well. The main concept is to find a healthy "staple" meal plan for everyday use. It is important that your staple meal plan puts together each meal: breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks, to conform to your caloric needs and that it has all the essential nutrients. If you eat this way every day it leaves room to deviate and enjoy holiday meals one or two days a week (hopefully not two days in a row) without suffering a significant weight gain.

Staple Diet: Every Meal should include:

Complete Protein Source: 6 ounces of chicken, meat, or fish (fits in the palm of your hand).

Healthy Fat: Olives or olive oil, avocado, butter etc. (fits in the palm of your hand).

Healthy Carbs: Beans, cauliflower, mushrooms broccoli, quinoa, (two handfuls after cooking) fruit should be consumed only AFTER the meal, NOT between meals as a snack, (too much sugar without a protein source will spike insulin release from the pancreas).

Snacks: To keep your metabolism revving and burning calories all day, snacks between meals is critical. They should consist of about 100-200 calories of healthy energy rich foods that will not spike insulin levels, i.e. always protein and fat, NEVER eat a carb rich snack by itself.

Good snacks: a handful of nuts, or nut butters or low carb crackers, cottage cheese, small cans of tuna in olive oil, etc.

Bad Snacks: fruit (too much sugar, save your three portions of fruit to be consumed after meals when they won't spike your insulin levels and they will offer a healthy way to satisfy your sweet tooth).

If you eat "close to the ground", meaning avoid processed foods that bear little resemblance to food as it appears in nature, and stick to your staple diet every day, the occasional feast will not wreck your weight loss progress and the hard earned metabolic efficiency you have created with the long slow workouts you have performed the last few months. Reading Food Labels

People are now more concerned than ever regarding what they put in their bodies.  Luckily the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) now requires all foods to list the contents and other nutritional information. But reading food labels can be confusing at times. When trying to figure out what is in the food you are buying, you should focus less on what the front of the package says. The manufactures of these products want to catch your eye, so the marketing on the front of the package is often misleading. The fortunate thing is they can't lie on the label at the back of the package due to rules set by the FDA. When shopping ignore the marketing hype and turn over the package so you can find out what you are really eating. This article will provide valuable information on how to read food labels and guide you on how to make healthy decisions with your purchases.

1. Serving Size
This part of the label indicates the serving size and the number of servings in the package. Serving sizes are based on the amount of food people typically eat. Serving size can be expressed in the following ways - cups, spoons, slices, ounces, and grams. All data on the label is based on the serving size stated. Make sure to pay attention to the amount of servings you are eating. For example, one serving of the food above is 4 oz. If you ate the whole package, you would eat 16 oz. That quadruples the calories, other nutrients (fats, carbs etc.), and the %Daily Values (see below).

2. Calories and Calories from Fat
Calories provide a measure of how much energy you get from a single food serving. The label also tells you how many of the calories in one serving come from fat. For example, when looking at the label there are 280 calories in a serving so there are 130 calories coming from fat. If you ate 2 servings you would consume 560 calories and 260 of those calories would be coming from fat.  Rule of thumb is that you should limit the amount of fat (good fats) to no more than 30% of your daily caloric intake.

* 40 calories per serving is considered low;
* 100 calories per serving is considered moderate; and
* 400 calories or more per serving is considered high.
* Based on a 2,000-calorie diet set by the FDA

3. The Nutrients you should limit
The ingredients above are things you should limit in your diet. Eating too much fat, saturated fat, trans fat, cholesterol, and sodium may increase your risk of certain chronic diseases, like heart disease, high blood pressure, or cancer.

Total Fat - Is the number of grams of fat per serving of the food.
Saturated Fat - Is solid at room temperature and comes mainly from animal food products and some plants. For example, beef, pork, butter, whole milk, high fat cheese, and palm oil.

The Do's and Don'ts of Running

Just because our bodies have evolved to run, does not mean that they are equipped to handle the stress that comes with impoper running technique and damaging mechanics. Learn how to run and train smarter, not harder, with the help of Phase IV

Economy of motion
In the 30 years Robert Forster has practiced sports physical therapy in Santa Monica, Calif., he has treated world record holders, injured athletes and grandmothers recovering from hip surgery.
"Our bodies have evolved to run," said Forster by telephone from London, where he was working with the U.S. Olympic Track and Field team. "Our tree-dwelling ancestors had shorter legs, longer arms and shorter feet. The body actually changed to be effective at running. But we lost our ability to co-opt that economy of motion."
Forster said the current physical capacity of the average Western civilian is about 10 percent of what is possible.
"Some people can run 100 miles in a day," he said.
The most common running mistake he sees involves stride length, or the distance of the foot on the ground.
"Everyone is over striding," he explained. "You want to land under your center of gravity, or as close to it as possible. We tend to take too few steps per minute. Less time on the ground would take care of a lot of problems."
For the runner seeking greater efficiency, Forster prefers a series of running-related drills -  among them arm swings that target the pendulum-like motion and knee-high drills, which he described as prancing "like a Clydesdale horse."

Don't let an old injury keep you from enjoying races, morning runs, or attaining fitness goals. In the first part of Healthy Running Step by Step, authors Robert Forster, PT and Roy M. Wallack recommend the best training based on your fitness goals, including strength training, cross training, sprints, yoga, and plenty of rest. Part two goes a step further from other books by addressing the most modern methods of treatment -- including current studies on the amount of rest required, new and controversial surgical operations and injections, the newest and most effective gear, and barefoot/minimalist running as a form of healing. If you are recovering from an injury or want to prevent becoming injured in the first place, Healthy Running Step by Step is a must-have guide.

Phase IV Athlete Testimonials
Phase IV Scientific Health and Performance Center and Forster Physical Therapy work with people of all ages and abilities - helping them reach their full genetic potential and achieve injury-free peak performance.  We strive to help everyone accomplish their health and fitness goals, regardless of how far away they may seem. We have helped thousands of athletes meet or beat their goals, and nothing is more rewarding to our team of Exercise Physiologists and Physical Therapists than seeing someone's goals realized.

Here are what some of our clients have to say about their experience at Phase IV and Forster Physical Therapy:
  • "I had this crazy dream of completing a marathon and quickly into my training; I realized I would need help with making this dream a reality. Today, as a marathon finisher, I cannot thank you enough for all the support in making sure my body was ready to hit the pavement for 26.2 miles and cross the finish line injury free.  At mile 21, the middle of a long, curved hill, I found myself looking over and seeing runners dropping like flies with cramped quads, aching calves, and tightened hamstrings. While I may have said these words through tears, I said aloud 'Thank you Ron and thank you Forster Physical Therapy.' If it were not for your expertise, commitment to your patients, and passion for making people feel better than when they walked in, I would have been the person at mile 21 needing the medic.  Thank you again for helping me make my dream a reality - completing a marathon injury-free!"
    -Whitney Gaglio
  •  "After a tough beginning to the cross-country season - full of injuries and health issues, Marina, my 15-year-old daughter, needed someone to put her back together. We were referred to Phase IV and after the initial evaluation, the staff provided Marina with a program that was easy to follow and fit into her high school track schedule. Marina's program included diet, strengthening, stretching, and form. Marina learned to use her heart rate as a guide for her training and ultimately ran injury-free in the 1600m, 800m, and 4X400 relay.  She not only ran her personal best in track but also is leaving track healthy and looking forward to being the newly appointed cross-country team captain in the Fall."
    - Lisa MacDonald - Mother of Marina Praet, 15, Phase IV Athlete and Success Story
  • "Tracy helped me by creating a nutrition and exercise program that allowed me to perform better while racing.  Interestingly, I am running less that I would have on my own and getting better time and placement results.  The prescribed mix of weight training exercises, intervals, recovery, and focus on heart rate has helped me to improve.  I am excited to continue reaching my goals with Phase IV."
    - Nicole Elmes - Finisher of the 2015 "America's Best Half Marathon" with the following finishing times and accomplishments:
    Race total time:  1:47
    Pace: 8:12
Overall place:  389 out of 5021 (top 7%)
Sex place: 113 out of 2576 (top 4%)
    Division (35 - 39) place: 19 out of 444 (top 4%).
