Message from the CEO

Aaron Pico and Joe Warren Shine at Bill Farrell International Wrestling Tournament

Phase IV Olympic hopeful, 19-year-old Aaron Pico, accomplished something remarkable at the Bill Farrell Memorial International Wrestling Tournament this past weekend at the New York Athletic Club when he defeated the 26-year-old NCAA Champion Frank Molinaro for the bronze medal. Aaron is a remarkable young competitor.

After winning the California State Championship in 2013 as a high school freshman, which is no small feat, Aaron gave up what was sure to be a stellar high school career and a guaranteed full scholarship to any wrestling college of his choice, to pursue his goal of an Olympic Gold Medal in freestyle wrestling. In the US, high school and college wrestlers compete in a discipline of wrestling known as Folkstyle. This puts our athletes at a disadvantage when it comes to winning in the Olympic disciplines of Freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling, which are the only styles practiced around the world. While foreign wrestlers work to excel at the Olympic styles from a young age, US athletes typically only begin to focus full time on Freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling after college.

Aaron's path is not typical. He first began pursuing the sport of wrestling at the age of 4, and later began his formal freestyle wrestling training under the exclusive coaching of Valentin Kalika at the age of 13. Since leaving high school he has travelled the world with Coach Kalika, who is originally from Ukraine, to gain critical skills competing against the more experienced and older foreign competitors from Russia, Iran, Georgia, Turkey, and all the other countries around the world where wrestling is the national sport, much like football or baseball is in the US. All the travel has apparently paid off.

This past weekend Aaron, who now competes for the Titan Mercury Wrestling Club, dominated Molinaro in the 3rd place match 7-4, avenging his only loss in this prestigious and storied tournament. Earlier in the quarterfinals Molinaro squeaked by Aaron 4-2 to knock Aaron out of the winners bracket. The 65 kg weight class was packed with competitors who have won a combined total of 8 NCAA, Division 1 Championships.

His win over Molinaro and other outstanding domestic and foreign competitors bodes well for his chances of qualifying for the Olympic Trials at the US National Championships in Las Vegas in December, where the top 7 finishers will earn the right to compete at the trials in Iowa April 9 and 10. His performance this weekend proves his unconventional career decision to forego high school and college wrestling is paying off.

At the other end of the age spectrum, also competing at the Bill Farrell International tournament, Phase IV, MMA, and Greco-Roman World Champion, Joe Warren, made his comeback to wrestling with an impressive showing at age 39. Joe went 3-1 before retiring with a sore shoulder but not before proving he still has what it takes to make a run for Olympic Gold in Rio next summer, the one accolade that has eluded this multidiscipline champion.

We look forward to helping these two talented athletes achieve the pinnacle of sport performance. You can watch Aaron's bronze medal performance here.

Phase IV Science Helps Athletes Lose Weight
The weight cut practices used by many wrestlers and MMA athletes is dangerous and prevents them from performing at their highest potential. Phase IV science helps fighters lean out over time, limiting the amount of weight they have to cut in the days leading up to a fight, and ensuring that they can perform their best come fight night.

Fighters, wrestlers, and Mixed Martial Arts athletes try to gain a edge by competing at a lowest weight class possible. The challenge is to lose fat while maintaining lean muscle mass, strength, and performance skills as they get down in weight. Too many fighters rely on a severe dehydration and starvation process to lose up to 20 lbs the week of their competition to make the weight class. Instead, the goal of a science based weight loss program is to lose fat via diet and training strategies and to only rely on a dehydration process to lose the last 3-5 lbs of water weight right before they need to be weighed by officials.

Unfortunately, these highly focused and disciplined athletes do not have access to the science they need for healthy weight reduction, and instead rely on extremely dangerous levels of dehydration and severe diets to get under the weight limit for their bouts. MMA athletes and wrestlers will frequently drop 10-20 lbs in the few days before they weigh in. This dangerous approach to making weight leaves them unable to compete at their highest potential.

After months of training to get as fit as possible and ready themselves for battle, they sabotage their performance and expose themselves to greater risk of injury with these unsafe weight loss practices in the few days before their bout. Even with 24 hours to rehydrate and nourish themselves between the time competitors weigh in and fight time, they cannot replace all of the essential electrolytes and micronutrients they need to achieve peak performance. Dehydration also diminishes the natural levels of cerebral spinal fluid that surrounds the brain and provides the only cushion between the brain and the skull when punches, kicks, elbows and knees make contact with their heads. Full hydration is needed to help prevent traumatic brain injury.

Alternatively, the Phase IV science based training and weight loss program naturally allows athletes to lose fat and preserve muscle without the starvation or dehydration practices that are all too common. We begin 8-12 weeks before competition with heart rate specific workouts designed to reduce body fat and improve performance. We also work with the athletes through the fight week to supervise the last few pounds of weight loss via de-hydration.

Five Myths of Weight Loss

Myth #1) Hard workouts are the key to weight loss.
Undoubtedly by now you have read all the research that says that a combination of exercise and diet are the keys to weight loss and creating a healthy body. Most imagine this means purchasing a gym membership or a P90X workout program and making a commitment to grueling workouts day after day.

The Truth: Easy, low intensity workouts burn fat. Harder workouts burn carbohydrate and leave you feeling hungry. Walking, elliptical workouts and cycling (most of us cannot maintain a fat-burning heart rate while running) at a relatively easy pace creates the shift in your metabolism necessary to burn more fat 24/7, and this is the key to permanent and sustainable weight control.

Myth #2) The Fitness Formula:  220 - your age x 70% = Your Aerobic (Fat-Burning) Heart Rate
Fitness formulas such as this are supposed to put you in your aerobic heart rate training zone where your body can combine oxygen and fat to make energy. The problem is that they are not accurate.

The Truth: We have performed VO2 testing for thousands of athletes to determine their optimum fat-burning heart rate zones, and have found that the standard fitness formula is rarely accurate -- and when it is, it is by chance. Your metabolism is as individual as your fingerprints. And it changes with activity level, diet, and other lifestyle factors. The only accurate way to arrive at your most productive workout heart rate for weight loss is by VO2 testing. VO2 testing is simple and affordable and provides us with precise heart rate zones to assure that all of your workouts are 100% productive at making you a "Better Butter Burner."

Myth #3) Extreme Low-Calorie Diets are Necessary for Weight Loss.
Most of the clients who come to Phase IV for help with weight loss have already reduced their calorie consumption below the minimum necessary to maintain a healthy body. Frustrated by the lack of progress, most will continue to eat less and less and workout harder and longer -- and that is the worst thing they can do.

The Truth: When you eat too few calories and don't give your body enough fuel to run basic body functions, it triggers a protective mechanism that slows down your metabolism and directs your body to burn as few calories as possible, turning every calorie you take in to fat and storing it. This is an evolutionary trait that helped our ancestors through famine, but which now serves to frustrate those trying to manage their weight. Phase IV metabolic testing takes the guess work out of determining your resting metabolic rate, or the number of calories you need to run basic body functions and keep your metabolic engine burning more calories every day. Our weight loss clients, including many athletes who have previously had trouble achieving their optimal body weight and those who compete in specific weight classes, never go hungry. They eat three meals a day and healthy snacks to fuel their workouts and keep their metabolic calorie burn up all day.

The Do's and Don'ts of Running

Just because our bodies have evolved to run, does not mean that they are equipped to handle the stress that comes with impoper running technique and damaging mechanics. Learn how to run and train smarter, not harder, with the help of Phase IV

Economy of motion
In the 30 years Robert Forster has practiced sports physical therapy in Santa Monica, Calif., he has treated world record holders, injured athletes and grandmothers recovering from hip surgery.
"Our bodies have evolved to run," said Forster by telephone from London, where he was working with the U.S. Olympic Track and Field team. "Our tree-dwelling ancestors had shorter legs, longer arms and shorter feet. The body actually changed to be effective at running. But we lost our ability to co-opt that economy of motion."
Forster said the current physical capacity of the average Western civilian is about 10 percent of what is possible.
"Some people can run 100 miles in a day," he said.
The most common running mistake he sees involves stride length, or the distance of the foot on the ground.
"Everyone is over striding," he explained. "You want to land under your center of gravity, or as close to it as possible. We tend to take too few steps per minute. Less time on the ground would take care of a lot of problems."
For the runner seeking greater efficiency, Forster prefers a series of running-related drills -  among them arm swings that target the pendulum-like motion and knee-high drills, which he described as prancing "like a Clydesdale horse."

Wallack recommend the best training based on your fitness goals, including strength training, cross training, sprints, yoga, and plenty of rest. Part two goes a step further from other books by addressing the most modern methods of treatment -- including current studies on the amount of rest required, new and controversial surgical operations and injections, the newest and most effective gear, and barefoot/minimalist running as a form of healing. If you are recovering from an injury or want to prevent becoming injured in the first place, Healthy Running Step by Step is a must-have guide.

Phase IV Athlete Testimonials
Phase IV Scientific Health and Performance Center and Forster Physical Therapy work with people of all ages and abilities - helping them reach their full genetic potential and achieve injury-free peak performance.  We strive to help everyone accomplish their health and fitness goals, regardless of how far away they may seem. We have helped thousands of athletes meet or beat their goals, and nothing is more rewarding to our team of Exercise Physiologists and Physical Therapists than seeing someone's goals realized.

Here are what some of our clients have to say about their experience at Phase IV and Forster Physical Therapy:
  • "I had this crazy dream of completing a marathon and quickly into my training; I realized I would need help with making this dream a reality. Today, as a marathon finisher, I cannot thank you enough for all the support in making sure my body was ready to hit the pavement for 26.2 miles and cross the finish line injury free.  At mile 21, the middle of a long, curved hill, I found myself looking over and seeing runners dropping like flies with cramped quads, aching calves, and tightened hamstrings. While I may have said these words through tears, I said aloud 'Thank you Ron and thank you Forster Physical Therapy.' If it were not for your expertise, commitment to your patients, and passion for making people feel better than when they walked in, I would have been the person at mile 21 needing the medic.  Thank you again for helping me make my dream a reality - completing a marathon injury-free!"
    -Whitney Gaglio
  •  "After a tough beginning to the cross-country season - full of injuries and health issues, Marina, my 15-year-old daughter, needed someone to put her back together. We were referred to Phase IV and after the initial evaluation, the staff provided Marina with a program that was easy to follow and fit into her high school track schedule. Marina's program included diet, strengthening, stretching, and form. Marina learned to use her heart rate as a guide for her training and ultimately ran injury-free in the 1600m, 800m, and 4X400 relay.  She not only ran her personal best in track but also is leaving track healthy and looking forward to being the newly appointed cross-country team captain in the Fall."
    - Lisa MacDonald - Mother of Marina Praet, 15, Phase IV Athlete and Success Story
  • "Tracy helped me by creating a nutrition and exercise program that allowed me to perform better while racing.  Interestingly, I am running less that I would have on my own and getting better time and placement results.  The prescribed mix of weight training exercises, intervals, recovery, and focus on heart rate has helped me to improve.  I am excited to continue reaching my goals with Phase IV."
    - Nicole Elmes - Finisher of the 2015 "America's Best Half Marathon" with the following finishing times and accomplishments:
    Race total time:  1:47
    Pace: 8:12
Overall place:  389 out of 5021 (top 7%)
Sex place: 113 out of 2576 (top 4%)
    Division (35 - 39) place: 19 out of 444 (top 4%).
