More is Less for 39-Year-Old Phase IV Fighter Joe Warren
| 39 Year Old Joe Warren Wins Another Shot at the Title |
This past Friday in Hidalgo, Texas, Joe Warren won his 14th fight in the Bellator Mixed Martial Arts cage, the second most wins in Bellator history. He has now earned another title shot! People ringside asked - how does a 39-year-old member of the "Elder Class" of fighters keep getting better?
Joe has outlasted his opponents over and over again, winning the Bantam Weight title against a 24 year old in the fourth and fifth rounds. How does a 38-year-old (at the time) beat a 24 year old Brazilian Black Belt in the last two rounds to win his second World Title? By doing less!
We have been training Joe with Phase IV science since 2012. At that time, he had lost two of his last three fights and knew there must be a better way to approach his training. He was training more and getting less out of it. Like almost every fighter in MMA, he was overtraining. Against all current sport science, and in contrast to how elite athletes train in nearly every other sport, the thinking in MMA is that because it is such a demanding sport with multiple disciplines to master, fighters need to put in two-a-day high intensity workouts every day, for moths and months at a time.
We have worked with many fighters who were previously training 25 hours a week for 3-5 round fights lasting either 15 or thirty minutes in total, depending on if it is a championship fight. That is more than Ironman triathletes train, and their competitions typically last 8-9 hours for elite competitors. Joe now trains 7 hours a week and wins on conditioning.
More is Less When it Comes to Training
The reason Joe can train just 7 hours a week and still win is because his training is based upon his personal physiology. Phase IV athletes are assessed with a VO2 Metabolic Analysis to determine which energy systems are strong and which are deficient. All training is directed to improve on the athlete's weaknesses and build their strengths. Conversely, most fighters train so hard they lose their genetic advantage. Nearly all fighters fade in the fourth and fifth minutes of every round to about 60 % of their first round effectiveness, and in championship fights, the last two rounds typically look like two drunken sailors in a bar fight - wobbling around the cage, dangerously vulnerable to unnecessary damage. It is certainly not because they don't train enough, it's because they are over trained and they have lost ability - not gained it - in training camp.
Strength and Conditioning is Out of Control
Phase IV is a strength and conditioning outfit, and so what I am about to say is blasphemy in our profession. Joe Warren does no weight training. Strength and conditioning coaches do more harm in MMA than good! During fight camp is not the time to put athletes through two hour, gut-busting workouts 2-3 times per week, on top of hours and hours of high intensity MMA training. It just doesn't work. Without time for recovery, strength training breaks athletes down, causes injuries, and ruins their performance. The militarization of fitness in our culture has spilled over to professional sports. CrossFit and other high-volume, high-intensity workouts are not sports training. They have nothing to do with sports performance. This type of high intensity training only prepares participants to be good in the gym (when they are not injured), not on the field, court, or in the cage. Joe Warren does no weight lifting. All his strength training is done in the pool.
| Joe Warren's Water Power Workout. Joe does all of his strength training in the pool. |
Nutrition and Weight Management Is Not Complicated
Apparently to justify their existence in fight camp, nutritionists want to make sports nutrition so complicated that only they understand it. For athletes training 7-10 hours a week or more, sound nutrition and weight management (fighters compete in the lowest weight class possible to gain a competitive edge) are simple. Athletes should eat "close to the ground", meaning only foods that not highly processed. Once we measure an athlete's caloric needs with a simple Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) test and match their daily food intake to their caloric output in training each day, weight management is simple. With an abundance of fresh vegetables and quality proteins, athletes don't need supplements or "magic potions" to achieve high performance - we have proven this time and time again.

Phase IV Science-Based Tips for Marathon Runners
Becoming the efficient running machine that evolution has intended requires a sound strength & flexibility program, proper nutrition and hydration, an understanding of a few simple laws of physics and the mechanical drills that create the efficient movement patterns of champion runners. Improper running technique results in an inefficient use of energy stores and is the number one reason people "hit the wall" and wind up walking the last several miles of the marathon!
Some simple laws of physics govern running Mechanics. Human locomotion is a cyclic repetition of extremity movement performed to transport the body from one place to the other with the least amount of energy expenditure. An evolutionary breakthrough occurring 2 million years ago allowed humans to run long distances in search of food. With the changes in body type from ape-like tree dwelling creatures to the way we look today included an efficiency of movement that improved chances of survival.
It is now clear that the ability to travel long distances economically in competition for food is the key trait that forever separated humans from our predecessors and destined us to succeed like no other species to dominate the planet. We were born to run and have many features and specializations that permit us to run well. However our sedentary lifestyle has robbed our bodies of the strength necessary to exploit built in efficiencies. It takes specific training to maximize our potential for efficient and economical long distance running.
You can reach your genetic running potential through better mechanics, the right nutrition and hydration and proper stretching techniques. Following the simple tips below will greatly improve your running performance.
If you are struggling to meet your health and fitness goals, or want more information about how to periodize your training and maximize your diet for increased performance, call (310)582-8212 or e-mail info@phase-iv.net to set up your complementary Health & Performance Consultation

Phase IV Athlete Testimonials |
Phase IV Scientific Health and Performance Center and Forster Physical Therapy work with people of all ages and abilities - helping them reach their full genetic potential and achieve injury-free peak performance. We strive to help everyone accomplish their health and fitness goals, regardless of how far away they may seem. We have helped thousands of athletes meet or beat their goals, and nothing is more rewarding to our team of Exercise Physiologists and Physical Therapists than seeing someone's goals realized. Here are what some of our clients have to say about their experience at Phase IV and Forster Physical Therapy:-
"I had this crazy dream of completing a marathon and quickly into my training; I realized I would need help with making this dream a reality. Today, as a marathon finisher, I cannot thank you enough for all the support in making sure my body was ready to hit the pavement for 26.2 miles and cross the finish line injury free. At mile 21, the middle of a long, curved hill, I found myself looking over and seeing runners dropping like flies with cramped quads, aching calves, and tightened hamstrings. While I may have said these words through tears, I said aloud 'Thank you Ron and thank you Forster Physical Therapy.' If it were not for your expertise, commitment to your patients, and passion for making people feel better than when they walked in, I would have been the person at mile 21 needing the medic. Thank you again for helping me make my dream a reality - completing a marathon injury-free!"
-Whitney Gaglio
-
"After a tough beginning to the cross-country season - full of injuries and health issues, Marina, my 15-year-old daughter, needed someone to put her back together. We were referred to Phase IV and after the initial evaluation, the staff provided Marina with a program that was easy to follow and fit into her high school track schedule. Marina's program included diet, strengthening, stretching, and form. Marina learned to use her heart rate as a guide for her training and ultimately ran injury-free in the 1600m, 800m, and 4X400 relay. She not only ran her personal best in track but also is leaving track healthy and looking forward to being the newly appointed cross-country team captain in the Fall."
- Lisa MacDonald - Mother of Marina Praet, 15, Phase IV Athlete and Success Story
-
"Tracy helped me by creating a nutrition and exercise program that allowed me to perform better while racing. Interestingly, I am running less that I would have on my own and getting better time and placement results. The prescribed mix of weight training exercises, intervals, recovery, and focus on heart rate has helped me to improve. I am excited to continue reaching my goals with Phase IV."
- Nicole Elmes - Finisher of the 2015 "America's Best Half Marathon" with the following finishing times and accomplishments:
Race total time: 1:47
Pace: 8:12
Overall place: 389 out of 5021 (top 7%)
Sex place: 113 out of 2576 (top 4%)
Division (35 - 39) place: 19 out of 444 (top 4%).
