Congratulations to both Helen and Elena for outstanding performances in Las Vegas at the World Championships of Wrestling - 

Helen won Gold in the 55kg weight bracket in a stunning performance, winning by technical fall in the finals - not a single point was scored against her in any of her 5 match-ups.  She is well on her way to Gold at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Elena finished 10th in the 69kg weight bracket and continues her quest to the 2016 Rio Olympics in search of Gold.

Victoria Anthony
Won the USA Senior Division Women's National Wrestling Championship, but did not qualify for the U.S. World Team. She continues her quest to the 2016 Rio Olympics next summer. 

Aaron Pico
Congratulations on a bronze medal finish at the Junior World Championships of Wrestling in Brazil. After a well deserved break, he will begin training for his goal to win Olympic gold at the 2016 Olympic games in Rio.

Proper Physical Therapy Treatment for surgeries and other injuries is essential for preventing lasting disability and re-injury. Without proper coverage of PT treatments, we are likely to see an influx of recurring and more serious injuries.
Anthem Blue Cross Wants to Deny PT For Sports Injuries after November 1

Attention all active households! Starting November 1, 2015 Anthem Blue Cross claims they are no longer responsible to pay for Physical Therapy services that are needed to "return to sports, recreational, or vocational activities". 
 
The notion that Blue Cross health insurance benefits will not cover injuries that keep you out of work, or keep you from maintaining a health and fitness routine is a very disturbing position. This profit driven strategy effects everyone with health insurance because, based on past experience, if the Anthem decision to arbitrarily deny premium paying insured members these basic services is allowed to stand, the rest of the industry will follow.

Apparently, the Anthem Blue Cross strategy to reduce health care costs is to deny services. Denying services is not the way to reduce health care costs. This is not about Obamacare, and it's not about anemic insurance company profits, because they are as robust as ever.  Instead, it's about increasing Blue Cross profits at the expense of YOUR health. When injury or illness strikes, HEALTH insurance benefits should cover your rehabilitation until you are HEALTHY again - until you are able to return to the function and capabilities that you possessed when you paid your premiums. That's why you pay for health insurance. 
 
This shortsighted position denying insured member benefits that allow you to resume an active lifestyle and your fitness activities (when scientific research has undeniably proven that maintaining an active lifestyle will save health care dollars in the future), is a travesty.  They won't pay for you to get the care you need to return to work after an injury. How can any of us afford the ever-increasing health insurance premiums if we can't work?  

It gets worse. Anthem Blue Cross is hiring a discount management firm who will second-guess every decision your doctor and therapist make regarding your health. After your doctor or PT examines you and determines what you will need rehabilitation to get better, Blue Cross will require a detailed plan of care be submitted for preauthorization for those services. In addition to delaying your ability to get care when you need it most, a Blue Cross representative who has never examined you will decide the level of care you will receive. To date, with other insurance companies using middle management health care systems, we are typically given one third of the number of visits required to rehabilitate common injuries, ailments, and post surgical rehabilitation programs. The patient is either stuck paying the bill or left with lingering, or in many cases permanent, disabilities. 
 
This is what the California Physical Therapy Association has to say about this dangerous new strategy to cut health care spending at your expense: 
 
Discount Physical Therapy Networks are strengthening their presence in California at a record pace. Anthem Blue Cross has announced that they will be partnering with discount network, OrthoNet, LLC to supply utilization management (UM) for all PT and OT services provided to enrollees on November 1. The program will require PTs and OTs to request prior authorization through OrthoNet after every initial evaluation."
 
"CPTA has seen the devastating impact of similar networks on the overall viability of private practices in other states. Unlike the provider networks that represent therapists in negotiating contracts with payers and promoting quality assurance; these networks work for the benefit of the payers and themselves. They offer the ability to lower the costs of physical therapy through decreased pricing and managing utilization. In turn, the network offers drastically discounted rates to physical therapy practices and deny medically necessary treatment. Access to patients becomes limited when cumbersome preauthorization and administrative hurdles are established by discount networks and payers."

The last sentence gets to the core of the Anthem strategy: they will make it so cumbersome for members to receive the benefits they deserve and pay for, that the patient gives up and suffers, allowing Anthem to shirk their financial responsibility altogether. 

What can you do? You can call your insurance broker, your Health Services Representative at work, or Anthem Blue Cross directly and let them know that these practices are unfair and unacceptable for your and your family. These strategies have worked in other states where insurance companies have worked to deny basic and essential services.

The New Diet Rules For Runners

Excerpt from Healthy Running Step by Step

Our knowledge of food and diet is rapidly growing and changing. Some of the old rules that were long accepted as gospel have been turned on their head in recent years, such as "carbo-loading"-ingesting a great pile of carbohydrates the night before a big workout or an event to "pack" the muscles with glycogen fuel. It has long been a tradition in the endurance world. But it's wrong. Here's the correct eating strategy:
 
1. Avoid processed carbs. They prevent use of fats, spike insulin, and cause inflammation.</b>
Processed carbohydrates include bread, pasta, rice, crackers, baked goods, and other sweets. (See "Wean Yourself Off Wheat: For Many Reasons, You're Better Off without Your Daily Bread" on pages 94-95 on the particular problems with wheat.) Processed carbs are dangerous for three reasons:
 
* Carbs stop fat use. Carbohydrates in your diet are counterproductive in your effort to improve fat utilization. If you put carbs in your tank, your body will reach for them as fuel before it reaches for fat to make energy for workouts and daily living.
* Carbs spike your insulin and put you to sleep. Example: If you eat a big bowl of pasta, the large insulin spike opens the cell windows and transports the carbs into the cells quickly, removing them from the bloodstream. That makes you sleepy or causes you to crave a sugar fix or caffeine to pick you up.
* Carbs create inflammation in the gut, keeping you chronically inflamed and bloated. Inflammation in the body produces excessive cholesterol. You will learn that saturated fat is not killing us; it's the carbohydrates that do that.
 
2. Don't eat carbs alone.
Dilute and delay the quick absorption of processed carbs and sugars by always eating them with a protein-such as peanut butter on rice crackers. Eat fruit only after meals containing protein. This mixture is one reason why the Mediterranean diet is so effective: It includes combinations of carbs and protein eaten together.
 
3. Don't fear fat-love it.
Recent research has exposed the big lie propagated by medical and nutritional science over the last 50 years: that dietary fat is making us fat, ruining our heart and blood vessels, and destroying our health. In fact, the opposite is true. Processed whole grains, the very food that we've been told are at the core of a healthy diet, is what is killing us.
