| The inflammatory processes of the body are something that everyone who works out should understand. Knowing how to treat inflammation and how to properly treat your muscles to promote recovery is the most important part of any sustainable fitness program. |
Inflammation Control in Injury and Life
Inflammation is the overwhelming focus of recent health and medical studies. This week's feature article illuminates the role of inflammation in disease and in health. Although inflammation is a natural part of our biology, we now realize chronic inflammation plays a role in many diseases and chronic health problems. Responding to health threats and injury, our bodies are equipped with a multiple step process that starts with a predictable inflammatory response and moves through a clean up and reconstruction phase, to ultimately lead to healing and a return to health.
What we are learning now, however, is that if left unchecked, chronic inflammation is the root of many health evils as well. Chronic inflammation can be caused by stress, damaged joints, disease, environmental pollutants, inflamed gums, or an irritated digestive tract from poor nutrition, food allergies, and food sensitivities.
In our world, we are constantly dealing with the control of inflammation. Whether we are treating the localized inflammation from acute injuries, or systemic chronic inflammation from athletes who push themselves too far, too often, and for too long, our primary goal is to control the body's inflammatory process.
With acute, localized injury, the inflammatory reaction to a simple sprain or strain has been shown to be exaggerated. Our bodies, in what may be a left over vestigial evolutionary trait, seem to overreact to simple injuries in protective mechanism to keep our ancient ancestors from being active when tissues needed to heal. Science has shown us that the inflammation process with the associated swelling actually cuts off the blood supply and kills off otherwise healthy tissue in the immediate area of the injury. Ice and compression are used to control the runaway inflammation and swelling, and therefore to limit the collateral damage of healthy tissues. With these interventions, sports medicine science minimizes the area of injury, and shortens the healing period for a speedy return to full function and normal activities.
To learn how you can achieve your health and fitness goals with proper training and recovery techniques, and how you can reach your peak level of fitness or achieve your personal best, injury free, please call (310)582-8212 for a complimentary Phase IV Health and Performance Consultation.

Discovery Reveals How Inflammation In The Body Occurs, Gives Clues For New Drugs
Original Article from Forbes.com by Emily Mullin
| Scientists may have unlocked the secret behind inflammatory responses in the body and the body's anti-inflammatory responses, as well and begun to utilize these responses for a variety of uses; one of which is the development of new anti-inflammatory drugs. |
What do seemingly unrelated medical conditions like Alzheimer's, cancer, diabetes and heart disease have in common? Answer: They've all been connected to excess inflammation in the body.
Because of its link to many age-related diseases, there's growing interest among pharmaceutical and biotech companies to find new targets involved in inflammation that could lead to novel anti-inflammatory drugs. But while the symptoms of inflammation in disease are well known, scientists still do not fully understand the biological mechanisms behind it.
Now, researchers at Virginia Tech and their collaborators have identified key cellular functions that help regulate inflammation - a discovery that could have important implications for drug development. The findings, published in the journal Structure, explain how two proteins in particular, called Tollip and Tom1, work together to trigger inflammation.
Short-term or acute inflammation is a good thing: It's the body's natural response after an injury or infection, and it restores normal tissue structure and function. But too much inflammation can be a bad thing.
"At appropriate levels, the inflammatory response protects your body from foreign materials, but if it is not properly regulated it can lead to severe, chronic conditions," said Daniel Capelluto, an associate professor of biological sciences at Virginia Tech and corresponding author on the study, in a university statement. Capelluto is also a fellow at the Virginia Bioinformatics Institute.
Inflammation occurs when the body is attacked by a virus or other microbe, causing specialized cells to release pro-inflammatory signals. Like a walkie-talkie picking up a radio signal, these pro-inflammatory signals get recognized by cell-surface proteins called interleukin-1 receptors, which are known as major regulators of inflammation. This triggers a cascade of pro-inflammatory molecules to be released, boosting the body's response against invading pathogens.

Science Confirms Turmeric As Effective As 14 Drug
Original Article from themindunleashed.org by Sayer Ji
Turmeric is one the most thoroughly researched plants in existence today. Its medicinal properties and components (primarily curcumin) have been the subject of over 5600 peer-reviewed and published biomedical studies. In fact, our five-year long research project on this sacred plant has revealed over 600 potential preventive and therapeutic applications, as well as 175 distinct beneficial physiological effects. This entire database of 1,585 ncbi-hyperlinked turmeric abstracts can be downloaded as a PDF at our Downloadable Turmeric Document page, and acquired either as a retail item or with 200 GMI-tokens, for those of you who are already are members and receive them automatically each month.
Given the sheer density of research performed on this remarkable spice, it is no wonder that a growing number of studies have concluded that it compares favorably to a variety of conventional medications, including:
- Lipitor/Atorvastatin(cholesterol medication): A 2008 study published in the journal Drugs in R & D found that a standardized preparation of curcuminoids from Turmeric compared favorably to the drug atorvastatin (trade name Lipitor) on endothelial dysfunction, the underlying pathology of the blood vessels that drives atherosclerosis, in association with reductions in inflammation and oxidative stress in type 2 diabetic patients. [i] [For addition curcumin and 'high cholesterol' research - 8 abstracts]
- Corticosteroids (steroid medications): A 1999 study published in the journal Phytotherapy Research found that the primary polyphenol in turmeric, the saffron colored pigment known as curcumin, compared favorably to steroids in the management of chronic anterior uveitis, an inflammatory eye disease.[ii] A 2008 study published in Critical Care Medicine found that curcumin compared favorably to the corticosteroid drug dexamethasone in the animal model as an alternative therapy for protecting lung transplantation-associated injury by down-regulating inflammatory genes.[iii] An earlier 2003 study published in Cancer Letters found the same drug also compared favorably to dexamethasone in a lung ischaemia-repurfusion injury model.[iv] [for additional curcumin and inflammation research - 52 abstracts]
- Prozac/Fluoxetine & Imipramine (antidepressants): A 2011 study published in the journalActa Poloniae Pharmaceutica found that curcumin compared favorably to both drugs in reducing depressive behavior in an animal model.[v] [for additional curcumin and depression research - 5 abstracts]

Phase IV Athlete Testimonials |
Phase IV Scientific Health and Performance Center and Forster Physical Therapy work with people of all ages and abilities - helping them reach their full genetic potential and achieve injury-free peak performance. We strive to help everyone accomplish their health and fitness goals, regardless of how far away they may seem. We have helped thousands of athletes meet or beat their goals, and nothing is more rewarding to our team of Exercise Physiologists and Physical Therapists than seeing someone's goals realized. Here are what some of our clients have to say about their experience at Phase IV and Forster Physical Therapy:-
"I had this crazy dream of completing a marathon and quickly into my training; I realized I would need help with making this dream a reality. Today, as a marathon finisher, I cannot thank you enough for all the support in making sure my body was ready to hit the pavement for 26.2 miles and cross the finish line injury free. At mile 21, the middle of a long, curved hill, I found myself looking over and seeing runners dropping like flies with cramped quads, aching calves, and tightened hamstrings. While I may have said these words through tears, I said aloud 'Thank you Ron and thank you Forster Physical Therapy.' If it were not for your expertise, commitment to your patients, and passion for making people feel better than when they walked in, I would have been the person at mile 21 needing the medic. Thank you again for helping me make my dream a reality - completing a marathon injury-free!"
-Whitney Gaglio

"After a tough beginning to the cross-country season - full of injuries and health issues, Marina, my 15-year-old daughter, needed someone to put her back together. We were referred to Phase IV and after the initial evaluation, the staff provided Marina with a program that was easy to follow and fit into her high school track schedule. Marina's program included diet, strengthening, stretching, and form. Marina learned to use her heart rate as a guide for her training and ultimately ran injury-free in the 1600m, 800m, and 4X400 relay. She not only ran her personal best in track but also is leaving track healthy and looking forward to being the newly appointed cross-country team captain in the Fall."
- Lisa MacDonald - Mother of Marina Praet, 15, Phase IV Athlete and Success Story
-
"Tracy helped me by creating a nutrition and exercise program that allowed me to perform better while racing. Interestingly, I am running less that I would have on my own and getting better time and placement results. The prescribed mix of weight training exercises, intervals, recovery, and focus on heart rate has helped me to improve. I am excited to continue reaching my goals with Phase IV."
- Nicole Elmes - Finisher of the 2015 "America's Best Half Marathon" with the following finishing times and accomplishments:
Race total time: 1:47
Pace: 8:12
Overall place: 389 out of 5021 (top 7%)
Sex place: 113 out of 2576 (top 4%)
Division (35 - 39) place: 19 out of 444 (top 4%).
