Message from the CEO
|
The primary factor influencing your energy levels and ability to maintain stamina during longer and tougher workouts is the type of fuel you consume. More veggies can help stave off dips in energy during high intensity training.
|
Low Carb Athletes Need to Know The Science
The science is conclusive; the Mediterranean diet - characterized by relatively low-carbs, and lots of fresh vegetables with healthy fats and protein sources - is the healthiest diet on earth. If you've been following this column, and if you have read my new book, Healthy Running, Step by Step, you know that it is the processed carbs, and not dietary fat, that wrecks our metabolism and creates many of the lifestyle diseases we are faced with today.
A diet low in processed carbohydrates - breads, pasta, rice, sweets, and baked goods- when matched with a smartly designed aerobic exercise program, will very quickly create the healthy, fat burning metabolism that helps you maintain body weight and provides plenty of energy to run your life.
However, once "metabolic efficiency" is created with a low carb diet and low intensity exercise in the correct personal heart rate zones, and your body learns to use fat as it's primary energy source for daily tasks, you still might find your energy lagging during higher intensity activities like weight training, spinning, and boot camp, or longer duration activities like tennis, hiking, or running. The answer to this problem is to increase the portions of healthy carbs in your diet before and after these types of activities. This is accomplished by eating more vegetables in order to maintain energy levels for the tougher, longer workouts.
This week's feature article helps you choose the best naturally gluten free, non-processed foods to fuel your summer time fun.

The 9 Best Gluten Free Foods for Runners
By: Ariel Main- Rodale News
Article Courtesty of Rodale News
| Although a gluten free diet has not been proven to be scientifically more effective than a diet including gluten, many runners and other athletes have found that a gluten free diet has increased performance levels. Examples of gluten free foods that can keep metabolism and energy levels high are quinoa, beans, fresh and dried fruit, and cornmeal, among others. |
Considering that "gluten free" has become the healthy diet du jour, a lot of athletes probably wonder if giving up gluten, a problematic protein found in wheat, barley, and rye, can help them work harder and last longer. Are gluten-free foods the best foods for runners?
There's no scientific evidence that going gluten free will help the average person become a better runner, says Arthur Agatston, MD, in his book The South Beach Diet Gluten Solution. "There are, however, many athletes who have reported better performance following a gluten-free diet," he says, adding that Novak Djokovic became the top tennis player in the world after giving up gluten. Djokovic claims that going gluten-free gave him more energy, sharper focus, and an improvement in the asthma that had compromised his ability to win long matches.
"It certainly seems logical that if a gluten-sensitive athlete is experiencing fatigue, lack of mental focus, and other symptoms, such as stomach and joint pains, that he or she is likely to perform better gluten-free," Dr. Agatston adds. All of those are symptoms that can plague people who can't tolerate gluten but aren't clinically diagnosed with celiac disease, a disorder in which the body is unable to digest gluten proteins. But even if you're not gluten-sensitive, he says, going gluten free may give you an energy jolt, since the body utilizes extra energy to digest gluten, which can detract from your performance and just generally slow you down.
All the same, wheat provides carbs, and carbs provide fuel for athletes, right? While that is true, you can still get all the requisite energy from whole foods that are naturally gluten free. Joanna Sayago Golub, editor of the new Runner's World Cookbook gave us this list of the best gluten-free foods for runners that will keep you going all the way to the finish line (or at the very least, the end of your workout).

The New Diet Rules for Runners
Book excerpt from Healthy Running Step by Step by Robert Forster, PT
Our knowledge of food and diet is rapidly growing and changing. Some of the old rules that were long accepted as gospel have been turned on their head in recent years, such as "carbo-loading"-ingesting a great pile of carbohydrates the night before a big workout or an event to "pack" the muscles with glycogen fuel. It has long been a tradition in the endurance world. But it's wrong. Here's the correct eating strategy:
1. Avoid processed carbs. They prevent use of fats, spike insulin, and cause inflammation. Processed carbohydrates include bread, pasta, rice, crackers, baked goods, and other sweets. (See "Wean Yourself Off Wheat: For Many Reasons, You're Better Off without Your Daily Bread" on pages 94-95 on the particular problems with wheat.) Processed carbs are dangerous for three reasons:
* Carbs stop fat use. Carbohydrates in your diet are counterproductive in your effort to improve fat utilization. If you put carbs in your tank, your body will reach for them as fuel before it
reaches for fat to make energy for workouts and daily living.
* Carbs spike your insulin and put you to sleep. Example: If you eat a big bowl of pasta, the large insulin spike opens the cell windows and transports the carbs into the cells quickly, removing them from the bloodstream. That makes you sleepy or causes you to crave a sugar fix or caffeine to pick you up.
* Carbs create inflammation in the gut, keeping you chronically inflamed and bloated. Inflammation in the body produces excessive cholesterol. You will learn that saturated fat is not killing us; it's the carbohydrates that do that.
2. Don't eat carbs alone. Dilute and delay the quick absorption of processed carbs and sugars by always eating them with a protein-such as peanut butter on rice crackers. Eat fruit only after meals containing protein. This mixture is one reason why the Mediterranean diet is so effective: It includes combinations of carbs and protein eaten together.
If you are struggling to meet your health and fitness goals, or want more information about how to periodize your training and maximize your diet for increased performance, call (310)582-8212 or e-mail info@phase-iv.net to set up your complementary Health & Performance Consultation

Serving Up Some Physical Therapy
| Crucial to Pete Sampras' continued career was his rehabilitation with Robert Forster, PT. Forster has also helped prolong the life of the bodies of athletes such as another tennis great, Maria Sharapova. |
When tennis superstar Pete Sampras won the 2000 Wimbledon championship, one of the people he made sure to thank was his physical therapist Robert Forster, PT. It was Forster who treated the tennis great's several injuries, helping him garner the strength to make it back on the courts when many in the sport thought he should simply retire.
"I was treating recreational tennis players when George Fareed, the Davis Cup doctor, referred Pete Sampras to me," said Forster, who has practiced sports physical therapy in Santa Monica, California, as owner of Forster Physical Therapy Clinic for more than 20 years. "I began working with Sampras on some minor injuries. He had hurt his disc in 1999 at the U.S. Open, and there was a long rehabilitation. People doubted he could ever come back, and I made my mark in tennis because he came back and won his 13th Grand Slam [event]. I continued treating him the last years of his career."
After his success with Sampras, Forster was asked to work as a physical therapist for the tennis tournament in Los Angeles (currently called the Countrywide Classic), and subsequently other tennis players came calling for his private services.
The next was Maria Sharapova, who came to see Forster for a chronic overuse injury to her right pectoral muscle. During one match in 2005, Sharapova complained that she felt pain in the muscle when she struck her shots, and the harder she hit the more painful it became. Eventually she was forced to withdraw from the match.

Phase IV Athlete Testimonials |
Phase IV Scientific Health and Performance Center and Forster Physical Therapy work with people of all ages and abilities - helping them reach their full genetic potential and achieve injury-free peak performance. We strive to help everyone accomplish their health and fitness goals, regardless of how far away they may seem. We have helped thousands of athletes meet or beat their goals, and nothing is more rewarding to our team of Exercise Physiologists and Physical Therapists than seeing someone's goals realized. Here are what some of our clients have to say about their experience at Phase IV and Forster Physical Therapy:-
"I had this crazy dream of completing a marathon and quickly into my training; I realized I would need help with making this dream a reality. Today, as a marathon finisher, I cannot thank you enough for all the support in making sure my body was ready to hit the pavement for 26.2 miles and cross the finish line injury free. At mile 21, the middle of a long, curved hill, I found myself looking over and seeing runners dropping like flies with cramped quads, aching calves, and tightened hamstrings. While I may have said these words through tears, I said aloud 'Thank you Ron and thank you Forster Physical Therapy.' If it were not for your expertise, commitment to your patients, and passion for making people feel better than when they walked in, I would have been the person at mile 21 needing the medic. Thank you again for helping me make my dream a reality - completing a marathon injury-free!"
-Whitney Gaglio

"After a tough beginning to the cross-country season - full of injuries and health issues, Marina, my 15-year-old daughter, needed someone to put her back together. We were referred to Phase IV and after the initial evaluation, the staff provided Marina with a program that was easy to follow and fit into her high school track schedule. Marina's program included diet, strengthening, stretching, and form. Marina learned to use her heart rate as a guide for her training and ultimately ran injury-free in the 1600m, 800m, and 4X400 relay. She not only ran her personal best in track but also is leaving track healthy and looking forward to being the newly appointed cross-country team captain in the Fall."
