Message from the CEO
| While Jessica Penne did not steal the Strawweight Championship Belt from Joanna Jedrzejczyk, she showed an amazing amount of skill and refused to quit, qualities which will serve her well in her fighting career moving forward. |
Jessica Penne Earns Respect in Her Bid for the Title
Jessica Penne is not the UFC strawweight champion of the world. She lost her challenge fight against the reigning champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk in Berlin on Saturday. Despite the one sided nature of the fight; Jessica earned a great deal of respect in the world of Mixed Martial Arts, even while losing.
Joanna is now 10-0 in the Ultimate Fighting Championship and a former kick boxing world champion. She may be the best striker in all of MMA, man or woman. Her sharp and accurate striking proved to be too much for Jessica, who suffered a large laceration on her nose in the second round. As she bled profusely, when most fighters would have crumbled, Jessica continued to show fierce bravely and tremendous amounts of heart in an attempt to execute her pre-fight game plan, to no avail.
On paper, Jessica's judo, wrestling, and jujitsu skills would have brought the champion to the ground and nullified her superior striking skills. From there, Jessica would find a submission hold to cause Joanna to " tap out" and surrender the World Championship Title and the belt.

Harper Wins Track and Field Nationals for Spot on WC Team
| Dawn Harper Uses her training with Bob Kersee and the help of Forster Physical Therapy and Phase IV to harness her power into performing at her peak level. She focuses on only herself and the race she is running. She does not let herself become distracted by the other athletes, ensuring every race she runs is her personal best. |
Dawn Harper won the 100-meter hurdles final at the USA Track and Field National Championships on Saturday, earning her a spot on the US team, which will compete at the World Championships in Beijing, China this August.
Her trip to Beijing will certainly seem familiar. The last time she competed at the famous "The Bird's Nest" Olympic Stadium in 2008, she walked out with Olympic Gold.
However, her journey to the 2008 Olympic games wasn't an easy one. Dawn suffered an injury that required surgery right before the outdoor season of the Olympic year got underway. After rehabbing at Forster Physical Therapy and Phase IV, she was once again fit to run, but she had no sponsor (the injury had scared off the sponsors). With a loaned pair of running spikes from her World Champion teammate, Michele Perry, and a masterfully coached season by her long time coach, Bob Kersee, four months later she stood atop the Olympic podium with gold around her neck.
The 2008 Olympic final was challenging as well. Dawn lined up for the Olympic 100 meter hurdles final with the heavily favored Lolo Jones just a few lanes away. Jones was so heavily favored that most athletes would have been focused on second place. But not Bob Kersee's athletes, they are trained to run their own race.

Proper Hydration Yields Better Performance
Summer is here and the heat is getting turned up in Southern California. For cyclists and runners this means dehydration and more serious conditions like heat stroke and hyponatremia. Hyponatremia is a decreased concentration of sodium in the blood, which can lead to serious physiological conditions. Avoid hyponatremia or water intoxication (a very dangerous condition) by taking in fluids with electrolytes during hyper hydration efforts. It is also important to take extra care to maintain healthy fluid and electrolyte levels to prevent heat stroke and muscle cramping.
Beyond Thirst
Thirst is a good signal that it's time to get a drink. But if you wait till you're thirsty while exercising, you've waited too long. Thirst is the first sign of dehydration.
Why Do I Need Electrolytes?
Electrolytes help maintain proper fluid balance as well as muscle and nerve functioning. The most commonly measured electrolytes are sodium, potassium, chloride, and bicarbonate. We lose electrolytes when we sweat. Also, too much plain water will flush these out of your system. Maintaining a healthy balance of electrolytes in the body is critical. Using sports products like electrolyte tablets in your water bottle will ensure proper electrolyte replacement. A pound of sweat contains between 400-700 mg. of sodium. As always, how much sodium you lose is individual to you. As you become acclimated to the heat, your body will become more sweat-efficient and you will lose less sodium. What is the danger? As you become sodium depleted (or hyponatremic), you will not absorb fluids as efficiently in the stomach and the result will be muscle cramps and fatigue.

Serving Up Some Physical Therapy
| Crucial to Pete Sampras' continued career was his rehabilitation with Robert Forster, PT. Forster has also helped prolong the life of the bodies of athletes such as another tennis great, Maria Sharapova. |
When tennis superstar Pete Sampras won the 2000 Wimbledon championship, one of the people he made sure to thank was his physical therapist Robert Forster, PT. It was Forster who treated the tennis great's several injuries, helping him garner the strength to make it back on the courts when many in the sport thought he should simply retire.
"I was treating recreational tennis players when George Fareed, the Davis Cup doctor, referred Pete Sampras to me," said Forster, who has practiced sports physical therapy in Santa Monica, California, as owner of Forster Physical Therapy Clinic for more than 20 years. "I began working with Sampras on some minor injuries. He had hurt his disc in 1999 at the U.S. Open, and there was a long rehabilitation. People doubted he could ever come back, and I made my mark in tennis because he came back and won his 13th Grand Slam [event]. I continued treating him the last years of his career."
After his success with Sampras, Forster was asked to work as a physical therapist for the tennis tournament in Los Angeles (currently called the Countrywide Classic), and subsequently other tennis players came calling for his private services.
The next was Maria Sharapova, who came to see Forster for a chronic overuse injury to her right pectoral muscle. During one match in 2005, Sharapova complained that she felt pain in the muscle when she struck her shots, and the harder she hit the more painful it became. Eventually she was forced to withdraw from the match.

Phase IV Athlete Testimonials |
Phase IV Scientific Health and Performance Center and Forster Physical Therapy work with people of all ages and abilities - helping them reach their full genetic potential and achieve injury-free peak performance. We strive to help everyone accomplish their health and fitness goals, regardless of how far away they may seem. We have helped thousands of athletes meet or beat their goals, and nothing is more rewarding to our team of Exercise Physiologists and Physical Therapists than seeing someone's goals realized. Here are what some of our clients have to say about their experience at Phase IV and Forster Physical Therapy:-
"I had this crazy dream of completing a marathon and quickly into my training; I realized I would need help with making this dream a reality. Today, as a marathon finisher, I cannot thank you enough for all the support in making sure my body was ready to hit the pavement for 26.2 miles and cross the finish line injury free. At mile 21, the middle of a long, curved hill, I found myself looking over and seeing runners dropping like flies with cramped quads, aching calves, and tightened hamstrings. While I may have said these words through tears, I said aloud 'Thank you Ron and thank you Forster Physical Therapy.' If it were not for your expertise, commitment to your patients, and passion for making people feel better than when they walked in, I would have been the person at mile 21 needing the medic. Thank you again for helping me make my dream a reality - completing a marathon injury-free!"
-Whitney Gaglio

"After a tough beginning to the cross-country season - full of injuries and health issues, Marina, my 15-year-old daughter, needed someone to put her back together. We were referred to Phase IV and after the initial evaluation, the staff provided Marina with a program that was easy to follow and fit into her high school track schedule. Marina's program included diet, strengthening, stretching, and form. Marina learned to use her heart rate as a guide for her training and ultimately ran injury-free in the 1600m, 800m, and 4X400 relay. She not only ran her personal best in track but also is leaving track healthy and looking forward to being the newly appointed cross-country team captain in the Fall."
