Message from the CEO
| Watch Jessica Penne fight for the UFC Championship Belt on UFC Fight Pass, this Saturday June 20, 12pm ET/3pm PST. |
Opportunity Knocks for Phase IV Fighter Jessica Penne
In the unpredictable world of Mixed Martial Arts, things do not often progress in a linear fashion. Injuries, suspensions, and upsets all add to the uncertain nature of the sport. To capitalize on opportunity, the fighters often take a new fight with just a few weeks' notice, or change course in the middle of training camp. This is exactly what occurred for Phase IV athlete Jessica Penne.
Jessica Penne is a 32-year-old Italian American Mixed Martial Arts pro with a record of 12 wins and only 2 losses. She is a well-rounded fighter and submission expert with 7 of her wins coming from getting her opponents into inescapable holds, forcing them to "tap out" (i.e. surrender for the loss - for more information on Mixed Martial Arts lingo, see this week's "Training Corner" article). Jessica is the former Invecta UFC Champ, and placed third on the Ultimate Fighter reality show after winning her bout at the show's finale last December in a "Fight of the Night" performance against Randa Markos.
Penne, the UFC women's 115 lb. Strawweight 3rd ranked contender, was busy training for a non-title, three round fight against Juliana Lima, which was scheduled for May 30. That was when the call came that would force her coaching team and Phase IV to change our plans for her training. She would no longer be traveling to Brazil to fight Lima, with the hopes of eventually earning a shot at a title fight - she would now be preparing to face Joanna Jedrzejczyk in a 5 round UFC World Championship fight in Berlin, Germany on June 20. An opportunity that usually takes years to materialize was dropped in Penne's lap, and she rose to the occasion, eagerly accepting the fight.

How Fighters Make Weight
Editors note: Fighters strive to compete at the lowest possible weight class to exploit their size and strength attributes. The day before the fight, they must step on a scale in front of their opponent and officials, to assure they are at or under the weight limit. Some fighters lose up to 15 pounds of water weight in a severe dehydration protocol that is not safe. Phase IV weight management programs for fighters are designed to safely reduce body fat, and rely on a minimal dehydration protocol.
WARNING: These techniques have no place in weight loss methods for the general public. They do not represent a viable long-term weight loss plan. This is NOT an article on sustainable weight loss or healthy living. Rather, it's a fascinating look at how far athletes and scientists will go to manipulate the human body for a competitive advantage. This is the Phase IV protocol that fighters receive at the end of training camp.
| MMA World Champion, Joe Warren "The Baddest Man on the Planet" uses Phase IV training and weight cut techniques to peak his fitness and be able to perform to his highest potential on fight night. |
Final Training Taper and Weight Cut Protocol for Combat Sports
Phase IV training programs naturally lean out fighters over the course of the 8-12 week fight camp, and well before weigh-in. During that time, we have specifically trained your metabolism to burn more fat at higher and higher levels of work intensity for maximum performance benefits. This training allows your body to burn fat 24/7 as its primary energy source. This not only serves to increase your ability to be more active in the cage, but also leans out your body over time and sets the stage for a healthy final weight cut.
Keep Feeding the Fire
Calorie Restriction is not productive during the harder training weeks at the end training camp. It is important to keep calories coming to supply nutrients to fuel your workouts, aid recovery, and maintain muscle mass. To reduce body fat, we need to "feed the fire" and keep your metabolic rate high. Calorie restriction puts your metabolism in an idle and causes you to burn fewer calories, and store more fat. A Tutorial on Mixed Martial Arts Terminology
Mixed martial arts (MMA) is a full-contact combat sport that allows the use of both striking and grappling techniques, while standing and on the ground, from a variety of other combat sports and martial arts. Various mixed-style contests took place throughout Europe, Japan, and the Pacific Rim during the early 1900s. In 1980, the first regulated MMA league was established in the United States. In 1993, the Gracie Family brought the combat sport of vale tudo, that had developed in Brazil in the 1920s, to the United States with the founding of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).
The more dangerous vale tudo-style bouts of the early UFCs were made safer with the implementation of additional rules, leading to the popular, regulated form of MMA seen today. Originally promoted as a competition with the intention of finding the most effective martial arts for real, unarmed combat situations, competitors were pitted against one another with few rules. Later, fighters employed multiple martial arts into their style while promoters adopted additional rules aimed at increasing safety for competitors and promoting mainstream acceptance of the sport.
The rules for modern mixed martial arts competitions have changed significantly since the early days of vale tudo, Japanese shoot wrestling, and UFC 1, and even more from the historic style of pankration. As the knowledge of fighting techniques spread among fighters and spectators, it became clear that the original minimalist rule systems needed to be amended. The main motivations for these rule changes were protection of the health of the fighters, the desire to shed the perceptions of barbarism and lawlessness, and to be recognized as a legitimate sport.

Serving Up Some Physical Therapy
| Crucial to Pete Sampras' continued career was his rehabilitation with Robert Forster, PT. Forster has also helped prolong the life of the bodies of athletes such as another tennis great, Maria Sharapova. |
When tennis superstar Pete Sampras won the 2000 Wimbledon championship, one of the people he made sure to thank was his physical therapist Robert Forster, PT. It was Forster who treated the tennis great's several injuries, helping him garner the strength to make it back on the courts when many in the sport thought he should simply retire.
"I was treating recreational tennis players when George Fareed, the Davis Cup doctor, referred Pete Sampras to me," said Forster, who has practiced sports physical therapy in Santa Monica, California, as owner of Forster Physical Therapy Clinic for more than 20 years. "I began working with Sampras on some minor injuries. He had hurt his disc in 1999 at the U.S. Open, and there was a long rehabilitation. People doubted he could ever come back, and I made my mark in tennis because he came back and won his 13th Grand Slam [event]. I continued treating him the last years of his career."
After his success with Sampras, Forster was asked to work as a physical therapist for the tennis tournament in Los Angeles (currently called the Countrywide Classic), and subsequently other tennis players came calling for his private services.
The next was Maria Sharapova, who came to see Forster for a chronic overuse injury to her right pectoral muscle. During one match in 2005, Sharapova complained that she felt pain in the muscle when she struck her shots, and the harder she hit the more painful it became. Eventually she was forced to withdraw from the match.

Phase IV Athlete Testimonials |
Phase IV Scientific Health and Performance Center and Forster Physical Therapy work with people of all ages and abilities - helping them reach their full genetic potential and achieve injury-free peak performance. We strive to help everyone accomplish their health and fitness goals, regardless of how far away they may seem. We have helped thousands of athletes meet or beat their goals, and nothing is more rewarding to our team of Exercise Physiologists and Physical Therapists than seeing someone's goals realized. Here are what some of our clients have to say about their experience at Phase IV and Forster Physical Therapy:-
"I had this crazy dream of completing a marathon and quickly into my training; I realized I would need help with making this dream a reality. Today, as a marathon finisher, I cannot thank you enough for all the support in making sure my body was ready to hit the pavement for 26.2 miles and cross the finish line injury free. At mile 21, the middle of a long, curved hill, I found myself looking over and seeing runners dropping like flies with cramped quads, aching calves, and tightened hamstrings. While I may have said these words through tears, I said aloud 'Thank you Ron and thank you Forster Physical Therapy.' If it were not for your expertise, commitment to your patients, and passion for making people feel better than when they walked in, I would have been the person at mile 21 needing the medic. Thank you again for helping me make my dream a reality - completing a marathon injury-free!"
-Whitney Gaglio

"After a tough beginning to the cross-country season - full of injuries and health issues, Marina, my 15-year-old daughter, needed someone to put her back together. We were referred to Phase IV and after the initial evaluation, the staff provided Marina with a program that was easy to follow and fit into her high school track schedule. Marina's program included diet, strengthening, stretching, and form. Marina learned to use her heart rate as a guide for her training and ultimately ran injury-free in the 1600m, 800m, and 4X400 relay. She not only ran her personal best in track but also is leaving track healthy and looking forward to being the newly appointed cross-country team captain in the Fall."
