Message from the CEO

Establishing a solid aerobic base is critical to both performance and health-seeking exercise programs.  Low-intensity training reduces health risk factors and prepares your body for high-intensity training later.

The Health and Fitness Benefits of Low Intensity Exercise

Whether your goal is to establish a great aerobic base to build a solid fitness foundation for your race season, or to lose weight and reduce health risk factors, you first need to understand the scientific benefits of developing a robust aerobic metabolism.

For performance related goals, developing a strong aerobic base has many benefits. During these low intensity workouts - performed early in any fitness program - you prepare your body for the highest levels of fitness that will come with further training. Inadequate base training will increase the risk of injury, illnesses and inconsistent performances throughout your competitive season.

For health related goals, the physiological adaptations created in the low intensity aerobic base building phase of an exercise program hold protective benefits.  By performing these low-intensity exercises and building your base level of fitness, you reduce body fat, increase vascular health, improve blood sugar and help promote and maintain a healthy heart. No one ever staved of a heart attack with the high intensity interval training that is so popular in the commercial fitness programs offered in "health" clubs and gyms across America. It is the low intensity workouts that build a healthy fat burning metabolism and ultimately promote long-lasting heart health with fewer risk factors.

How to Construct a "Base Training" Metabolic Workout

The effectiveness and sustainability of a workout plan relies heavily on how you treat your body before, during, and after workouts.  Duration, intensity, nutrition, hydration, and recovery techniques are all equally important in building a safe and healthy workout regimen.

Longer duration, continuous "metabolic" workouts (also known as  "cardio" workouts) include walking, running, cycling, swimming, elliptical training, etc. The physiological adaptations that occur through this type of workout have been shown to provide the most significant fitness and health benefits. This is the training that creates "metabolic efficiency" - the improved ability to burn fats for exercise and to run your life. This is the key to all sports performance training; whether it is for aerobic (longer duration, lower intensity) events or anaerobic (high intensity) sports which are sometimes called ballistic power or speed sports.

These types of aerobic workouts also offer the greatest degree of protection against diseases including heart disease, vascular disease, diabetes, and even certain cancers and mental health conditions. Metabolic exercise has also been shown to aide in stress management and improves concentration and learning retention. These benefits have led to the "Exercise is Medicine" slogan that has spread education about the value of low intensity, longer duration workouts. However, just like any medicine, the dosage, frequency, and intensity of workouts matter. To maximize the effectiveness of your workouts and to ensure your fitness program is sustainable for life, consider the following guidelines.

The Four Pillars of Health and Performance

By Robert Forster, PT

People have always wanted to be the best. We naturally seek to achieve higher and higher levels of success, and nowhere does this hold more true than when we examine the evolution of fitness.  Throughout the years, being fit has become a social issue.  Being fit is a status symbol, one that people are constantly seeking to reform. However, this can be a dangerous way of thinking.  By constantly looking for the "new" and "better" fitness trend, we are moving farther and farther away from safe, healthy, sustainable fitness practices.  If we take a step back and look at the real science behind our bodies and how they function, we can easily see the best and most effective way to achieve injury-free peak performance is NOT a new trend or fad, but a scientifically based way of helping the body reach its highest genetic potential.

Science now has the answers for effective training and injury prevention: Periodization Training. Developed by Soviet Sports Scientists during the Cold War when they sought to dominate the world of sport, this method of training is broken into distinct cycles where each physiological attribute is trained in a scientifically rational sequence. Research has shown that Periodization Training to be the most productive approach to achieving fitness because it is based on how the human body reacts to the stress placed on it when we exercise.

Devising a fitness plan based on sound science can still be a daunting task because advice comes from many unqualified and unscientific sources. It can be difficult to discern where to focus your energy to get the most out of your training and remain injury free. Over the last 32 years we have had the good fortune to work with some the world's most successful athletic coaches. Together, we have developed training and injury prevention programs that have helped produce 42 Olympic medallists, many world and national records.

Press Room

Serving Up Some Physical Therapy

By Keith Loria

Crucial to Pete Sampras' continued career was his rehabilitation with Robert Forster, PT. Forster has also helped prolong the life of the bodies of athletes such as another tennis great, Maria Sharapova.

When tennis superstar Pete Sampras won the 2000 Wimbledon championship, one of the people he made sure to thank was his physical therapist Robert Forster, PT. It was Forster who treated the tennis great's several injuries, helping him garner the strength to make it back on the courts when many in the sport thought he should simply retire.

"I was treating recreational tennis players when George Fareed, the Davis Cup doctor, referred Pete Sampras to me," said Forster, who has practiced sports physical therapy in Santa Monica, California, as owner of Forster Physical Therapy Clinic for more than 20 years. "I began working with Sampras on some minor injuries. He had hurt his disc in 1999 at the U.S. Open, and there was a long rehabilitation. People doubted he could ever come back, and I made my mark in tennis because he came back and won his 13th Grand Slam [event]. I continued treating him the last years of his career."

After his success with Sampras, Forster was asked to work as a physical therapist for the tennis tournament in Los Angeles (currently called the Countrywide Classic), and subsequently other tennis players came calling for his private services.

The next was Maria Sharapova, who came to see Forster for a chronic overuse injury to her right pectoral muscle. During one match in 2005, Sharapova complained that she felt pain in the muscle when she struck her shots, and the harder she hit the more painful it became. Eventually she was forced to withdraw from the match.
