Message from the CEO

As medial professionals look to combat the growing number of health risk factors plaguing Americans, many have turned to exercise prescriptions - but these can be misused just like any other prescription.  Learn the safe way to work out to reduce health risk factors without going overboard.

Exercise is Medicine and Accordingly, it is Dose Specific

By now, everyone knows that we need to be more active in order to be healthy. Since the dawn of the Industrial Age, humans have become increasingly sedentary, as the need for manual labor has diminished.  With that shift, we have seen an epidemic of "lifestyle" diseases emerge. Recent studies have shown that 60 percent of older US adults and 35 percent of all adults suffer from what is referred to as "metabolic syndrome".

"Metabolic syndrome" is defined as having three or more heath risk factors such as obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and vascular disease -- among others. These conditions are associated with our 21st century "lifestyle" choices.

The key to correcting these issues is to educate the people who need it most, and at this we have failed miserably. Most Americans continue to think that dietary fat is the biggest health villain, even after experts have come to a consensus that there is no evidence that consuming fats -- like butter, bacon and beef -- leads to high cholesterol and clogged arteries. Most experts now agree that it is the whole grains, especially wheat -- the very food we were told should replace fats in our diet -- that causes chronic inflammation in the gut and leads to the high control cholesterol levels that have become commonplace in today's medical arena.

The Right Dose of Exercise for a Longer Life

By Gretchen Reynolds

It is well known that everybody should exercise for health and fitness reasons - to prolong life and reduce health risk factors. But can you exercise too much? Can you be too fit, and how much should the average person work out in order to reduce risk factors?

Exercise has had a Goldilocks problem, with experts debating just how much exercise is too little, too much or just the right amount to improve health and longevity. Two new, impressively large-scale studies provide some clarity, suggesting that the ideal dose of exercise for a long life is a bit more than many of us currently believe we should get, but less than many of us might expect. The studies also found that prolonged or intense exercise is unlikely to be harmful and could add years to people's lives

No one doubts, of course, that any amount of exercise is better than none. Like medicine, exercise is known to reduce risks for many diseases and premature death.

But unlike medicine, exercise does not come with dosing instructions. The current broad guidelines from governmental and health organizations call for 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week to build and maintain health and fitness.

But whether that amount of exercise represents the least amount that someone should do - the minimum recommended dose - or the ideal amount has not been certain.

Scientists also have not known whether there is a safe upper limit on exercise, beyond which its effects become potentially dangerous; and whether some intensities of exercise are more effective than others at prolonging lives.

How Fit do You Need to Be?

Whether you want to compete in an Ironman Triathlon or simply be fit enough to live an active lifestyle, all fitness begins with an efficient metabolism and structurally sound body.

Metabolic efficiency requires an effective digestive system to absorb nutrients from the food you eat, and a well-functioning pulmonary system to absorb oxygen from the air you breathe to your cells. Once in the cell, oxygen and nutrients combine to create energy to run your life, fuel your exercise activities, and maintain a healthy body. It is that simple!

Structural health requires joints to function properly through a full range of motion. Joints function properly when the connective tissues and muscles surrounding the joints have adequate flexibility and strength to maintain proper alignment of the bones as they articulate at the joint. Movement and stretching is all that is needed for structural health. Again, it's that simple.

So, why all the fitness hype? The business of health and fitness is a multi-billion dollar industry, and everyone wants a piece of it. For many, getting fit is a lifelong struggle -spending thousands of dollars on unproven and unscientific exercise programs and trainers, as well as the costly injuries that often result from working out in an unsustainable, unhealthy way. The problem lies in the hyped up way fitness is being portrayed to the average person. Fad diets and exercise programs make it hard to discern what fitness means let alone how to achieve it.

Do you need to join a gym, hire a trainer, and suffer great discomfort or pain to get fit? Should you sign up for CrossFit and have them give you increasingly punishing workouts that leave you sore and unable to move comfortably for days? Do you need to do spin classes and lift weights on the bike to get lean and healthy? The answer to all these questions is heck no!

Press Room

Serving Up Some Physical Therapy

By Keith Loria

Crucial to Pete Sampras' continued career was his rehabilitation with Robert Forster, PT. Forster has also helped prolong the life of the bodies of athletes such as another tennis great, Maria Sharapova.

When tennis superstar Pete Sampras won the 2000 Wimbledon championship, one of the people he made sure to thank was his physical therapist Robert Forster, PT. It was Forster who treated the tennis great's several injuries, helping him garner the strength to make it back on the courts when many in the sport thought he should simply retire.

"I was treating recreational tennis players when George Fareed, the Davis Cup doctor, referred Pete Sampras to me," said Forster, who has practiced sports physical therapy in Santa Monica, California, as owner of Forster Physical Therapy Clinic for more than 20 years. "I began working with Sampras on some minor injuries. He had hurt his disc in 1999 at the U.S. Open, and there was a long rehabilitation. People doubted he could ever come back, and I made my mark in tennis because he came back and won his 13th Grand Slam [event]. I continued treating him the last years of his career."

After his success with Sampras, Forster was asked to work as a physical therapist for the tennis tournament in Los Angeles (currently called the Countrywide Classic), and subsequently other tennis players came calling for his private services.

The next was Maria Sharapova, who came to see Forster for a chronic overuse injury to her right pectoral muscle. During one match in 2005, Sharapova complained that she felt pain in the muscle when she struck her shots, and the harder she hit the more painful it became. Eventually she was forced to withdraw from the match.
