Why Do You Need Periodization Training?
"Recovery should be so well understood and actively enhanced that it becomes a significant component in training" - Tudor Bompa, Father of modern periodization theories.
Have you ever thought about why for over three decades the Russians were dominating almost every sport? The answer is something called 'Periodization'. In the early 1960's, Tudor Bompa, who is considered the 'Father of Modern Periodization', influenced the way Russian sports scientists approached training. Although Russian sports scientists had tried dividing the training year into different periods in the 1940's, it wasn't until Tudor Bompa's revisions in the 1960's that people really started seeing results. Perodization was a method that included phases of training that promoted rest.
This way the athletes were not training at the same intensity year round. The important differentiation is that these transitions in intensity and the new allotted rest promotes recovery and stimulates the body to grow stronger by enhancing the adaptive process via the natural hormone reactions to exercise. Growth Hormone, Testosterone and Insulin all increase when the body is stressed with a change in the nature of the exercise stimulus. However, the hormones will fade after about 8 weeks of the same stimulus as the body adapts to that stress and therefore necessitating another distinct change in the workouts. It is important to understand that all work is futile if time for recovery is not provided and the exercise stimulus is not altered after physical adaptation is achieved approximately every eight weeks. It is only after rest and recovery that adaptation can occur.

Periodization Training is for Life -- Part One
| While periodization training is a mainstay of professional athletes, the same science scales to any size of goal. The alternating combination of stimulus and rest, scientifically applied over a period of weeks and months, will vastly improve your training toward any event you're targeting. |
If you want to keep jumping into every fad fitness workout that comes along and don't care about losing large chunks of time (and your hard earned fitness) to nagging injuries and burnout, then keep following the fads. But if you want to get lean and fit and stay fit, stop getting injured, and maybe train for a specific event, your run-of-the-mill haphazard training won't cut it. To kick your fitness up several notches and keep it there year round, you have to train in a way that is good for your body, building it up methodically while limiting the potential for disruptive injuries.
To do that, you need a strategy that is almost bipolar in that it combines workouts that progress your fitness with rest days and rest weeks. Over the weeks and months, this hard/easy training schedule is the paradigm that gives your body time to recover and get stronger, more flexible and leaner.
Sequence is key. The science shows that you have to properly sequence your training to develop one aspect of fitness at a time and then use that as a foundation to build the next. In fact, to achieve your best fitness levels you must be incredibly patient. You will spend a long time building a broad base of aerobic infrastructure and musculoskeletal resiliency before adding more intense workouts. This strategy is virtually foolproof, used by the world's best athletes in every sport, and it'll work for you if you have the discipline to follow it.

Active Recovery for Sport and Life
"Recovery is when your body actually grows stronger and more efficient. It is when the benefits of your hard training are realized. Working hard is easy, everyone knows how to work hard, but those who work hard at recover are the ones who win,"

Only during recovery does your fitness grow. Workouts don't build fitness, they break your body down, and only if you allow recovery time and actively help your tissues heal, do you become stronger and more fit. All of our work with athletes is focused on aiding recovery and prevent injury.
Recovery is not laying on the sofa eating comfort food. There is nothing passive about recovery. Recovery is an active process where light "adaptation" workouts stimulate recovery better than rest alone. Light workouts are akin to the self-cleaning oven, where the heat is turned up to burn off the residue from cooking but no roast is placed inside. Light workouts provide the body the same opportunity to do house cleaning functions without having to recover from the damaging effects of a new workout. With the increased core temperature associated with recovery workouts, your body sets into motion an army of heat shock proteins that immediately go to work repairing an rebuilding tissues damaged by training.
