Message from the CEO
Congratulations to all who finished Sunday's L.A. Marathon! Forster Physical Therapy staff were on hand post-race to help Fleet Feet runners with recovery through nutrition, massage, ice baths, and education.
Post-L.A. Marathon Recovery Event at Forster Physical Therapy, the Official Physical Therapy Center of the Los Angeles Marathon.
Congratulations to all the runners who endured a very hot 26.2 miles today! The key to enjoyment today was electrolyte supplementation, above and beyond the electrolytes found in carbohydrate-based drinks and gels. The runners who took additional electrolyte pills fared much better. On hot days, runners will do best if they separate their water and electrolyte therapy from their calorie intake.
Heat increases sweat production and the loss of salty electrolytes in sweat, so on hot days runners need to take in more, or suffer painful muscle cramps and fade at about mile 18. However, if they rely on increasing electrolytes with more gels and drinks, then they over-eat, and suffer GI distress and cramps of a different kind. It's simple science.
Congratulations, Road Runners! It's been a great L.A. Marathon training year! Keep your feet moving!

Lack of Cardio Fitness can Increase Risk of Death by More Than a Third: New Henry Ford Study >> Stone Hearth Newsletters
A study by Henry Ford Hospital indicates that poor metabolic fitness, if combined with other lifestyle risk factors, can increase risk of death by slightly more than one-third. Even those who take minor steps toward a healthy lifestyle, without going so far as to run a marathon, contribute to longer, healthier life. Photo: Los Angeles Times
DETROIT - Poor cardiorespiratory fitness combined with other risk factors can increase the long-term risk of death by nearly 34%, according to a study involving nearly 70,000 patients of Henry Ford Hospital. Researchers made the finding during the Henry Ford Exercise Testing Project, or FIT Project, the largest study of cardiorespiratory fitness to date.
The unprecedented, long-term project looked at mortality rates of 69,858 patients age 18 to 96 who underwent treadmill stress testing between 1991 and 2009 at Henry Ford Health System facilities. This analysis included 58,818 patients who had no history of coronary blockages or heart failure.
Patients were referred by physicians for the treadmill testing, which measures how efficiently their heart transports blood and their body utilizes oxygen as they walk progressively faster and at steeper inclines.
Researchers then compared the patients' cardiorespiratory fitness level to their risk factors for cardiovascular disease: age, sex, HDL cholesterol and cholesterol levels, race, systolic blood pressure, smoking, blood pressure medication use and diabetes. To estimate patients' risk score, investigators used a new risk estimator calculator recommended by the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association in 2013.
"The people with the highest risk factor score and the lowest fitness level were associated with nearly a 34% increase in future relative risk for death compared to people who had the lowest risk score and the highest fitness level," says Henry Ford Hospital researcher and study co-authorSteven Keteyian, Ph.D.

Low Carb, High Fat is Healthy
People who avoid carbohydrates and eat more fat, even saturated fat, lose more body fat and have fewer cardiovascular risks than people who follow the low-fat diet that health authorities have favored for decades, a major new study shows.
The findings are unlikely to be the final salvo in what has been a long and often contentious debate about which foods are best to eat for weight loss and overall health. The notion that dietary fat, particularly saturated fat, is harmful, arose decades ago from comparisons of disease rates among large national populations.
But more recent clinical studies, in which individuals and their diets were assessed over time, have produced a more complex picture. Some have provided strong evidence that people can sharply reduce their heart disease risk by eating fewer carbohydrates and more dietary fat, with the exception of trans fats. The new findings suggest that this strategy more effectively reduces body fat and also lowers overall weight.

How PT Professionals Help Skiers Rehab, Prevent Injury, and Achieve Top Form >> ADVANCE Magazine
ADVANCE Magazine in the current issue features input from Robert Forster, PT, on the training and rehabilitation of skiers. Photo courtesy ADVANCE Magazine.
When ADVANCE's Brian Ferrie compiled an account of how skiers take advantage of physical therapy treatment, he turned to Phase IV founder and CEO, Robert Forster, PT.
"Phase IV is sports training," [Forster] explained to ADVANCE. "Many of our patients will finish their rehab there, and some will continue on their fitness programs. It's like a personal training gym staffed by physical therapists and exercise physiologists."
"Over the years, we've trained and treated numerous skiers for injuries, as well as developed fitness and preventative health programs for them," Forster added in the interview.

Wallack recommend the best training based on your fitness goals, including strength training, cross training, sprints, yoga, and plenty of rest. Part two goes a step further from other books by addressing the most modern methods of treatment -- including current studies on the amount of rest required, new and controversial surgical operations and injections, the newest and most effective gear, and barefoot/minimalist running as a form of healing.
