Message from the CEO
 | Phase IV founder and CEO Robert Forster, PT, teamed up with Addaday Sport to create a Forster PT line of rollers, massage stick, and other key recovery products. |
Forster PT and Addaday Partner on a New Line of PT-Inspired Self-Massage Products
Every physical therapist wants you to know that your body needs attention every day for it to continue to function properly throughout life. Whether you exercise regularly or not, everyday life leaves your muscles tired and tight, and your joints off center. Stretching and self massage techniques are the key tools to mitigate the physical toll of everyday life, and of your workouts.
With athletes and desk workers alike, much of our work is focused on mitigating the damaging effects of daily activities. Long days, poorly-designed chairs, and poor posture all work to corrupt your alignment and stress your joints. To expand the impact of our work beyond the walls of our facilities, we have partnered with Addaday Sport, the national leader in self-massage and recovery products, to create the Forster PT edition of physical therapy-inspired tools. These scientifically-designed massage sticks, foam rollers, bodywork balls, and a flexible massage device called the Boomerang, all incorporate varied surface textures and shapes designed to release muscle and tendon adhesions, and provide a daily realignment of your joints.
The new Forster Edition of Addaday products helps users via three physiological mechanisms:
1) Increase circulation: Manipulation of the muscles causes the blood vessels to dilate and pump more blood into the muscles and fascia.
Benefits:
Before Exercise: warms up the tissues and make them more pliable to stretching, and less prone to injury.
After Exercise: flushes the residue of exercise (i.e. metabolic waste products) from the muscles to hasten recovery.
2) Treats Connective Tissue scarring and muscular adhesions, which result from normal training and body imbalances.
Benefits:
Before Exercise: breaks down dysfunctional scarring that forms as your body attempts to heal from the stress of your previous workouts. Helps create functional scarring that makes you more resilient to injury.
After Exercise: relaxes tired and tight muscles, works out the knots (muscle spasms) that occur when muscles are overtaxed.
3) Sensory Stimulation from the proprietary, textured surfaces of the Forster/Addaday massage tools stimulate the nervous system to create a reflex relaxation of the muscles, much the same way acupressure works.
Benefits:
Before Exercise: works out the knots and relaxes the small muscle spasms, known as trigger points, which result from workouts and daily life and interfere with proper muscle and joint function.
After Exercise: relaxes muscle spasm that occurs in fatigued or overtaxed muscles.
These products are available in running specialty stores across the nation, and also at addaday.com. Or come into Forster Physical Therapy or Phase IV for a free demonstration.

Active Recovery for Sport and Life

Phase IV and Forster PT founder and CEO Robert Forster, PT, collaborates with Addaday Sport to bring you the Forster PT Edition of self-massage products. Each of the pieces in the Forster PT Edition is scientifically designed to increase blood flow, break down connective tissue adhesions and scar tissue, and relax your muscles.

"Recovery is when your body actually grows stronger and more efficient. It is when the benefits of your hard training are realized. Working hard is easy, everyone knows how to work hard, but those who work hard at recover are the ones who win,"
-- Bob Kersee, the most successful track & field coach, with over 50 Olympic medal-winning performances.
Only during recovery does your fitness grow. Workouts don't build fitness, they break your body down, and only if you allow recovery time and actively help your tissues heal, do you become stronger and more fit. All of our work with athletes is focussed on aiding recovery and prevent injury.
Recovery is not laying on the sofa eating comfort food. There is nothing passive about recovery. Recovery is an active process where light "adaptation" workouts stimulate recovery better than rest alone. Light workouts are akin to the self-cleaning oven, where the heat is turned up to burn off the residue from cooking but no roast is placed inside. Light workouts provide the body the same opportunity to do house cleaning functions without having to recover from the damaging effects of a new workout. With the increased core temperature associated with recovery workouts, your body sets into motion an army of heat shock proteins that immediately go to work repairing an rebuilding tissues damaged by training.
With light activity, the vascular system is stimulated to increase blood flow to the muscles, delivering oxygen and nutrients to aide recovery. The muscle cells, stimulated by a release of hormones, step up the reparative functions and grow stronger. Similar occurrences improve connective tissue and bone repair as well. Stretching and self massage efforts before and particularly after light recovery workouts are more productive when unencumbered by the tightness that would otherwise occur following hard workouts. In this way, your stretching efforts go further toward elongating connective tissue and helping tendons and ligaments heal and grow stronger. A good indication of when your structural system is recovered and ready for another hard workout is when the stiffness from the last hard workout is absent.
Self-massage, with the use of massage sticks and rollers, is one of the best methods to aide recovery after workouts. Manipulation of the muscles and tissues increases blood flow, breaks down muscle and connective tissue adhesions, and promotes adaptation of these tissues to withstand the rigors of your training as you progress toward your goals.
You will feel the fatigue and tension leave your body. When coupled with stretching and icing sore areas, these self-recovery techniques can make a very significant contribution to the adaptive process you seek, along with increased fitness.
For video instruction on the use of the Forster PT edition of Addaday massage sticks and other products, go to Addaday.com and click on Forster Tutorials. You will find a complete video library on the use of massage sticks for recovery and a for a comprehensive list of common injuries.
Furthermore, you can learn more about the benefits of self-massage for recovery and pain relief at a special interactive seminar at Cynergy Cycles in Santa Monica, Tuesday night at 7 pm. Call 310-582-8212 or click here to reserve your spot.

Excerpt from Healthy Running, Step by Step, Chapter 5
Nutritional Optimization
Real foods control your insulin, help you burn more fat as fuel, and help deliver optimal performance.
Training is only half the battle when it comes to achieving the body you desire. Food is the other.
Just like with your training, a science-based approach to what you put in your body and when you do it has a great effect on your ability to achieve your athletic and health goals. My approach to health and fitness involves guided exercise and an easy-to-follow, "close-to-the- earth" diet. Both are designed for one singular goal: metabolic efficiency-to make you a better butter burner. We have discussed the importance of precision heart-rate training to develop your fat-burning metabolism in chapter 4; now it's time to dial in your diet to further serve this goal.
All of us, especially athletes, need to alter our relationship with food. We need to view daily nutrition as the source of our life energy and focus on foods that further health, not disease. In recent decades, we've been told more about what not to eat than what to eat to stay healthy. Slowly, our relationship with food is changing as our food supply is being exposed as corrupted and unnatural. We are realizing that we need natural foods to help keep us healthy and make us stronger, leaner, and more resistant to disease.
Fact: Most foods in the grocery store have been processed to such a degree by the giant food corporations that they have little nutritional resemblance to their root food sources. Based on extensive and costly research from farming to processing to packaging, the food industries try to get us hooked with appearance and addictive combinations of salt, sugar, and fat. Natural nutritional integrity be damned! What's worse is that medical and health experts have unintentionally played into the "laboratory-food- is-better-than-nature" syndrome by incorrectly tarring eggs, butter, and other healthy foods as health killers.
The key concept you need to remember about healthy nutrition is that you should eat foods that are close to the ground-meaning unadulterated and unprocessed. It's rare to find a food that comes out of the ground with unhealthy proportions of sugar, salt, and fat and that is damaging to our bodies.
I feel the best diet plan is simple, science based, easy to achieve, and can be boiled down to one sentence: Control insulin levels throughout the day and train your metabolism to be efficient at burning fat, not storing it.

How PT Professionals Help Skiers Rehab, Prevent Injury, and Achieve Top Form >> ADVANCE Magazine
 | ADVANCE Magazine in the current issue features input from Robert Forster, PT, on the training and rehabilitation of skiers. Photo courtesy ADVANCE Magazine. |
When ADVANCE's Brian Ferrie compiled an account of how skiers take advantage of physical therapy treatment, he turned to Phase IV founder and CEO, Robert Forster, PT.
"Phase IV is sports training," [Forster] explained to ADVANCE. "Many of our patients will finish their rehab there, and some will continue on their fitness programs. It's like a personal training gym staffed by physical therapists and exercise physiologists."
"Over the years, we've trained and treated numerous skiers for injuries, as well as developed fitness and preventative health programs for them," Forster added in the interview.

Don't let an old injury keep you from enjoying races, morning runs, or attaining fitness goals. In the first part of Healthy Running Step by Step, authors Robert Forster, PT and Roy M. Wallack recommend the best training based on your fitness goals, including strength training, cross training, sprints, yoga, and plenty of rest. Part two goes a step further from other books by addressing the most modern methods of treatment -- including current studies on the amount of rest required, new and controversial surgical operations and injections, the newest and most effective gear, and barefoot/minimalist running as a form of healing. If you are recovering from an injury or want to prevent becoming injured in the first place, Healthy Running Step by Step is a must-have guide.
