Message from the CEO
 | Phase IV classes and programs, such as Women's Weight Training, use a physical therapist's assessment to develop a conditioning program specifically for you. |
What's the Best Fitness Program?
Many people I meet want to know which workouts and fitness plans are the best.
At the risk of sounding evasive, I have to tell them that the best fitness program is one that meets their particular health and fitness needs, and that until we evaluate those needs, I cannot determine the best approach to their goals.
Although the health and fitness vulnerabilities of the human body are well known to us, and I have an informed opinion regarding the things we all need to do to remain healthy (see today's feature article), the best approach for each individual is determined by what they bring to the table.
Pre-existing joint issues, genetic predisposition to disease, time constraints, and current lifestyle all play a role in the design of the Phase IV program that is best for you.
Staffed by physical therapists, exercise physiologists, and nutritionists, Phase IV is a personal health and fitness center, a rehabilitation clinic, a research center, and an exercise physiology lab, all rolled into one business. We draw on 35 years of experience helping people of all ages and abilities reach their goals with science-based solutions.
While we do train elite and Olympic athletes, our typical client is an average citizen just like you or me. We create fitness and nutrition programs for busy business people to gain control of their health and fight stress, we help those with at-home responsibilities get fit to keep up with their family demands, we help age-group triathletes, marathoners, cyclists, and student athletes become more competitive - and we do it with personalized programs anchored in science and tailored to each individual's needs. Here are some of our programs and classes for you and your family.
Women's Weight Training: This class begins with a head-to-toe structural exam, performed by a physical therapist, to arrive at the safest and most effective weight training program found anywhere. Train with women who share your desire to get stronger, improve joint health, and control their weight, all under the careful eye of a Phase IV exercise specialist.
Sustainable Weight Loss Program: This suite of services first assesses, and then addresses, your personal health and fitness needs. We design the safest and most effective workouts for you, we direct you when to do them and at what intensity, when to rest and recover, and when to change the program to keep it all fresh. We determine the exact caloric intake you need to fuel life and your weight loss workouts, and we adjust the protein, fat, and carbohydrate ratios in your diet to peak your metabolism and set you up for permanent weight control. After you are instructed by our staff on exactly how to perform each exercise and complete every workout, you can train with us, or train on your own.
Performance Training Program: Whatever your sport, we can make you better, help keep you healthy, and keep you in the game longer. If you are interested in improving your performance, increasing your longevity in your sport, and preventing injury, we can design a plan for you. Our programs have been honed over 35 years in the results-driven world of elite athletics, as well as through working with thousands of recreational athletes.
Student Fitness Academy: If you want to know your child is exercising correctly, safely, and in a way that is right for their body type and age, they belong at Phase IV. Our student athletes learn how to stretch, how to warm up correctly, and how to execute each exercise with correct form. This program is designed to protect joints, improve posture, and increase strength, power, and agility. Our students have won league, CIF, and state championships, and many have been awarded scholarships. Most importantly, however, is that they learn how to train properly, how to respect and protect their bodies, and how to do the exercises that will serve them well throughout their lives.
We also perform bike fits, running gait analyses, and we create training programs for the marathoners, triathletes, and cyclists focusing on century-distance and multi-day events. We support the Ride2Recovery cycling program to help U.S. veterans, and we are the Exclusive Physical Therapy Provider of the Los Angeles Marathon, providing volunteer services for their Road Runners training program to help runners cross the finish line healthily.
Call today for a free Phase IV consultation, and let us help you and your family achieve your health and fitness goals.

What Your Body Needs to Maintain Health, Fitness, and Optimal Weight
 | A combination of motion, mobility, resistance training, and efficiency is crucial for your body to maintain health, fitness, and an optimal weight. Aerobic activities such as swimming provide these benefits in spades. Photo: Healthy Running, Step by Step |
By now, everyone knows from their doctor and from the press that we all need to exercise more and eat better. But what is the best workout and diet for you? The answer to that question is anchored in the science-based Phase IV assessment process. We will assess your physical health from head to toe, and unlock the mysteries of your physiology to determine the most productive approach to your health and fitness. We do know that it will include some combination of the following basic human health requirements:
Movement: Consistent bouts of continuous movement (including aerobic activities such as walking, hiking, cycling, swimming, rowing, or elliptical workouts) are essential for good health. Aerobic activities create everything from the chemicals in your brain that allow new synapses to form (learning), to the network of blood vessels that keep your heart healthy and your muscles working well, to the increased strength of your tendons, ligaments, and bones. Aerobic exercise has been proven to help prevent and reverse cardiovascular disease, obesity, diabetes, and even some forms of cancer. We all need regular aerobic activity to maintain health and help reduce risk of disease.
Joint Mobility: We all need to maintain the mobility of our fascia, tendons, and ligaments to assure that our joints work well for life. Your connective tissue structures will all tighten naturally over time if you do not practice regular stretching exercises. It is the shortening of these tissues that corrupts normal joint function, and contributes to arthritis. Healthy joints are critical to avoid debilitating pain later in life, and allow us to stay mobile throughout our lives for all of the health benefits of movement. See above.
Resistance Training: Moving your limbs and body against resistance, whether it be with weights, rubber bands, or through water, maintains and builds muscle, which is essential for healthy aging. Muscle mass decreases naturally after age 25 (sarcopenia), and reversing that trend with resistance training not only helps avoid weight gain as we age (you can't burn many calories if you have too little muscle), but also keeps your bones strong to avoid fractures later in life. Two out of every four women, and one out of every four men, will suffer an osteoporotic fracture in their life time.
Metabolic Efficiency: The ability of your body to use fats, as opposed to carbohydrates, to make energy to fuel both your life and the workouts you need to stay healthy is called "metabolic efficiency." By working at specific intensities while you exercise, and by eating a diet with the correct balance of fat, carbohydrate, and protein, you will create the fat-burning metabolism that prevents disease, reduces body fat, and provides the vitality we all desire.

A Full Serving of Protein at Each Meal Needed for Maximum Muscle Health
by Doug Paddon-Jones, University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston
Most Americans eat a diet that consists of little to no protein for breakfast, a bit of protein at lunch and an overabundance of protein at dinner. As long as they get their recommended dietary allowance of about 60 grams, it's all good, right?
Not according to new research from a team of scientists led by muscle metabolism expert Doug Paddon-Jones of the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. This research shows that the typical cereal or carbohydrate-dominated breakfast, a sandwich or salad at lunch and overly large serving of meat/protein for dinner may not provide the best metabolic environment to promote healthy aging and maintenance of muscle size and strength.
The new study, now online in press in the Journal of Nutrition, shows that the potential for muscle growth is less than optimal when protein consumption is skewed toward the evening meal instead of being evenly distributed throughout the day.

Wallack recommend the best training based on your fitness goals, including strength training, cross training, sprints, yoga, and plenty of rest. Part two goes a step further from other books by addressing the most modern methods of treatment -- including current studies on the amount of rest required, new and controversial surgical operations and injections, the newest and most effective gear, and barefoot/minimalist running as a form of healing.
