Message from the CEO

Health and fitness items make great holiday gifts. Forster Physical Therapy and Phase IV are offering 15% off essential services, such as the Phase IV Weight Loss Program, which includes a VO2 metabolic test (shown).

Happy Holiday Specials

Looking for unique gift ideas? Having trouble thinking of gifts for your favorite people? How about gifts for the person who has everything? What better way to say you care than to give friends and family the unique gift of health. This year, think outside the box, and consider gifting our health and fitness services and receive a 15% discount:

Physical Therapy Evaluation - everyone has an ache or pain they would like to get checked out by the experts, so gift someone a PT exam and we will evaluate their condition and prescribe the at-home treatments that will help them resolve their issue.

Phase IV Personal Training with a Physical Therapist - At Phase IV, your health and fitness program will be designed and executed by a licensed physical therapist. A personal health prescription will be constructed from a head-to-toe PT evaluation, and tailored to your goals. Your therapist will guide you through a progressive fitness plan with specific knowledge of your physical weaknesses, while drawing on 35 years of experience helping people of all ages and fitness levels reach their goals, injury-free. Sessions include targeted massage techniques as indicated.

Forster PT Sports Massage - the expert massage staff at Forster Physical Therapy has been handpicked and trained by our physical therapists to zero-in on the painful tissues, address the cause of the pain, and address those tight areas too

Phase IV Starter Nutrition Package - this package includes a dietary analysis to determine if the adequate macro and micro nutrients are being consumed with one's current diet, and advise the changes that will effect better health, increased energy, and optimal weight management.

Phase IV Weight Loss Program - includes a VO2 test to arrive at the optimal fat-burning heart rate zone for exercise so that all workouts are 100% productive towards optimal weight management; along with a Resting Metabolic Rate test to determine the precise quantity of calories your body needs to be healthy and lose excess body fat; and a nutrition plan to help you achieve your goals.

Phase IV Video Run Gait Analysis - to keep your favorite runner injury-free, they need to learn the right mechanics. No one would take up golf or tennis without lessons, but most people think that, because they ran as a child with no instruction, they do not need to learn how to run. Nothing is further from the truth. Running efficiently and protected from injury requires a running form that works with the laws of physics, not against them. Over-striding, aberrant arm swing, and improper shoe choice all affect mechanics negatively and result in wasted energy, suboptimal performance, and injury. This video analysis lets every runner know where they need to improve to feel and perform better.

Health and Fitness products make great gifts too: foam rollers, massage sticks, ice bags, compression clothing, Healthy Running, Step by StepThe Complete Water Power Workout Book, and compression socks are great, affordable gifts.

Call Phase IV or Forster Physical Therapy for the products and services listed above, and feel good while you make others feel better!

Have a safe and healthy holiday season!

Four Reasons You Need a Science-Based Health and Fitness Plan

A science-based health and fitness plan can help you balance exercise, rest, work and life stress, and injury-prevention to consistently improve your health and increase your performance. Illustration courtesy Healthy Running, Step by Step.

1) Maintain Your Mobility and Independence Throughout Your Life

We are all living longer. Researchers estimate that 40% of U.S. women alive today will live to be over 100 years old. The peak age for muscle mass and bone density among men and women is 25, and then it is all downhill from there - unless you exercise regularly. All other lifestyle diseases get worse with age too, so the longer you live, the more these problems are magnified. Every day doctors tell their patients they need to be more active, but they don't tell their patients how to execute a safe and sustainable exercise program. You need a science-based exercise plan to maintain muscle mass, bone density, and metabolic health while you age, and it has to be based on your personal physiology.

2) Your Time is Precious

We all lead busy lives, and finding the time to take care of ourselves is not only difficult, it means time away from family and work. It is important that your exercise time is well spent and 100% tailored to your personal needs. Metabolic testing is now accessible by everyone for less than the cost of a week of personal training at a national chain athletic club, and it assures you are working in the proper heart rate zones and eating properly for your personal physiology.

3) Injuries are Intrinsic to Exercise

The Center for Disease Control has reported that up to 50% of all those who exercise regularly suffer injuries each year. This is unfortunate - and largely avoidable. The fitness industry, like so many facets of our culture, pushes for quick and often unattainable results with disastrous consequences. All of us, from world class elite athletes to (and especially) everyday folks, need a joint preparation phase before they go near a weight machine or embark on an aerobic exercise program like running, swimming, walking, or cycling. When we create training programs for professional athletes, we focus half of their time in the gym on injury prevention, and your workouts should be the same.

4) Exercise Programs Get Stale Quickly

Basic to all science-based fitness training is that your body will adapt to any one type of workout very quickly, and as fitness gains fade, continuing with the same old workouts will deteriorate your health as well. This is the foundation of the periodization training science we use to help athletes win gold medals and set world records, because it accounts for the way the human body responds to the stress of exercise. Smart workout plans call for one type of workout for a period of time until beneficial adaptations occur, and then the workouts need to change, not by whim but with intention. Meaningful variation of your workouts also keeps your mind fresh and allows for a lifelong commitment to your health.

Five Things all Beginner Cyclists Should Know

Most beginner cyclists just head out on the bike, and have to learn successful riding fundamentals the hard way: trial and many errors. Bonking, cramping, saddle sores, crashing, and overuse injuries, all await the uneducated cyclist who decides "to figure it out as I go along." Typically it takes new cyclists about four cycling seasons to identify and avoid all the calamities that will sabotage performance and enjoyment. Athletes, in general, have an attitude of self-sufficiency and an independence streak, and that's good because when you are out on a long ride you have to be self-sufficient. However, failing to admit what you don't know will cost you.

In our experience those who learn from reading bits and pieces, or from a guy at the coffee shop, get incomplete or false information that will side track their acumen as a cyclist. As mentioned, this athlete can expect four cycling seasons before being able to perform consistently without mishap, if ever. Those who train with Science, on the other hand, get much closer to their goals in the first and second year of cycling. To enjoy your bicycle experience and reach your highest genetic potential as a cyclist, you need to trust the science and find those with real "rubber hits the road experience" (pun intended) to teach you how to avoid the common pitfalls. Not only have many "newbies" traveled on this journey before you, there are now over four decades of scientific research illuminating the best path to develop yourself as an aerobic athlete.

Purchase Healthy Running Step by Step via Addaday or in person at Forster Physical Therapy or Phase IV.

Don't let an old injury keep you from enjoying races, morning runs, or attaining fitness goals. In the first part of Healthy Running Step by Step, authors Robert Forster, PT and Roy M. Wallack recommend the best training based on your fitness goals, including strength training, cross training, sprints, yoga, and plenty of rest. Part two goes a step further from other books by addressing the most modern methods of treatment -- including current studies on the amount of rest required, new and controversial surgical operations and injections, the newest and most effective gear, and barefoot/minimalist running as a form of healing. If you are recovering from an injury or want to prevent becoming injured in the first place, Healthy Running Step by Step is a must-have guide.
