Message from the CEO

The marathon captures the sporting imagination because it lies just outside normal human capacity. Healthy Running, Step by Step can help guide you injury-free through broadening your capacity as a runner, regardless of distance.

The Marathon: Greek History and the Ability to Store Carbs

In the last 30 years, participation in U.S. marathons has exploded, with over 747 marathons scheduled in North America in 2014. At least 600,000 people will finish the storied 26.2 miles this year. For most, it is not really a race at all, but more of a test of their own will to finish: a race against themselves, a test of their personal mettle, and a contest that pushes the envelope of their own performance.

Ever since the Greek soldier, Pheidippides was ordered to cover the 26.2 miles from Marathon to Athens to deliver the news of a military victory against the Persians in 490 BC - and uttered the famous phrase, "Joy to you, we've won" before he collapsed and died - the challenge of the marathon has held a special place in the minds of men and woman. However, it is not just about Greek history. The average runner today knows little or nothing about the origins of this rather random-distance race. Why, then, has the allure of a challenge of this specific distance persisted as a standard of human physical achievement for 2,500 years?

It turns out that the marathon distance is just beyond the physiological endurance capacity of the average man or woman. The fact that the challenge of completing the marathon is just outside the genetic endurance potential of most people is precisely why it has persisted. If it were easy for most of us to just lace up and go for a 26.2 mile jaunt, the lore of this race would not have been a preoccupation of ours for so long.

The average human can only store so many grams of carbohydrate, the main fuel source of most runners. With training, one may boost this carbohydrate storage capacity, but the marathon requires just a bit more than even a typically-trained runner can supply. The ability to store adequate carbohydrate to fuel oneself during the marathon becomes the limiting factor for most runners.

Marathoners then have two choices: slow down to a walk after about 20 to 22 miles, once their body runs out of carbs and they "bonk," or teach their body to burn fat instead of carbohydrate to finish in good form. The main focus of every marathon training program must be to become what we call a "better butter burner."

Let Phase IV teach you how to burn more fat and become a "better butter burner." Whether you want to complete a marathon, become a better runner, or shed some pounds, call or click now for a free Health and Performance Consultation and learn how.

Furthermore, a great new book from Phase IV founder and CEO, Robert Forster, PT, Healthy Running, Step by Step, includes all of the science of successful, injury-free running. Buy your copy here and get started on creating the best version of you possible!

Feature Article
The Four Pillars of Health and Performance

by Robert Forster, PT and Roy M. Wallack

To obtain optimal running performance and minimize risk of injury-related setbacks, runners must focus on touching all four pillars of health and performance throughout their training cycles.

Book Excerpt from Healthy Running, Step by Step

PROBLEM #1: Runners Don't See the Big Picture
Some runners hate the gym but love to stretch. Some hate both stretching and weight training. And most seem to think that because they work out so much, they can eat whatever they like.

Too often I meet runners who fall in love with running but pick and choose from the other aspects of training that they need to keep them running injury-free. This is especially true for those not focused on performance, who don't necessarily care whether they get on the podium because they just run for the love of it.

Well, the fact is that runners can't just run-and they can't cherry-pick. To keep your running injury-free, stay healthy, and protect against common running injuries that can sideline you for a while or end your running career, and alter your lifestyle, you have to do all the things that you may not like doing, such as stretching, lifting weights, eating better, and correcting your running mechanics. These four training variables-structural integrity, metabolic efficiency, nutritional optimization, and running technique- are no secret, because the healthiest, most successful athletes do them. I've come to call them the Four Pillars of Health and Performance.

Over the years, as I scrutinized the most successful athletic programs anywhere-for example, USC football, the Los Angeles Lakers, and, most of all, Bob Kersee's track and field group-it has become clear that they were successful year after year because they stayed focused on all of the Four Pillars. Ignore any of them for too long, and you will run into problems.

For instance, if you don't improve your structural integrity-the strength and flexibility of joints, bones, muscles, and connective tissue-you will be unable to perform correct running mechanics, and eventually overburden your body as it struggles to withstand excessive forces. If you don't pay attention to your metabolic efficiency-particularly the ability to use fat as a major fuel source for running-you will fatigue early in your workout and risk injury, as your deteriorating muscle function causes you to suffer strains and sprains. Ditto if you don't optimize your nutrition to support your training and recovery efforts. And the best-trained and -fed runner can still wreck his joints without adopting the proper running technique.

Bottom line: You can't run in isolation or train just some of the Four Pillars and expect not to break down. You have to pay some attention to each of these key areas of training. Ideally, you work them simultaneously.

The Real Reason Wheat is Toxic >> The Healthy Home Economist

by The Healthy Home Economist

The stories became far too frequent to ignore.

Emails from folks with allergic or digestive issues to wheat in the United States experienced no symptoms whatsoever when they tried eating pasta on vacation in Italy.

Confused parents wondering why wheat consumption sometimes triggered autoimmune reactions in their children but not at other times.

In my own home, I've long pondered why my husband can eat the wheat I prepare at home, but he experiences negative digestive effects eating even a single roll in a restaurant.

There is clearly something going on with wheat that is not well known by the general public. It goes far and beyond organic versus nonorganic, gluten or hybridization because even conventional wheat triggers no symptoms for some who eat wheat in other parts of the world.

Don't let an old injury keep you from enjoying races, morning runs, or attaining fitness goals. In the first part of Healthy Running Step by Step, authors Robert Forster, PT and Roy M. Wallack recommend the best training based on your fitness goals, including strength training, cross training, sprints, yoga, and plenty of rest. Part two goes a step further from other books by addressing the most modern methods of treatment -- including current studies on the amount of rest required, new and controversial surgical operations and injections, the newest and most effective gear, and barefoot/minimalist running as a form of healing. If you are recovering from an injury or want to prevent becoming injured in the first place, Healthy Running Step by Step is a must-have guide.
