Message from the CEO
 | Multi-day events such as La Ruta challenge you physically and psychologically, forcing you to dig deep, find out what you've really got, and ultimately reap the rewards of the challenge. |
La Ruta De Los Conquistadores
One can learn a lot about themselves in the effort required to complete a multi-day cycling event, and if you do it for a charity, then everyone wins! In 1998, after 15 years of recreational cycling, I decided to test my mettle at the 300 mile, three-day mountain bike race across the isthmus of Central America in Costa Rica known as La Ruta de Los Conquistadores. For my first endurance challenge I am not sure it was wise to pick an event that promotes itself as "The Toughest Mountain Bike Race on the Planet," but I did.
As a 185-pound former college wrestler, I had my work cut out for me. Wrestling is an anaerobic power sport and although we now train fighters by first establishing a robust aerobic base of fitness before building maximum anaerobic fitness, back in the '70s, when I competed as a college athlete, there was no such understanding of human physiology. From ages 11 to 20 all I did was train at high intensities that did nothing to prepare me for my future endeavors on a bike. While I had developed a fair amount of endurance over the 15 years of cycling after my NCAA Division I wrestling career was over, it was no where near where I needed to be able to finish this race in good form.
Although there were failures and disappointments along the way, the training leading up to the race and the race itself taught me a lot about who I was as an adult competitor. Although I certainly wasn't as physically strong at 40 years old as I was when I competed in wrestling, I was was far stronger mentally. In my teens and 20s I lacked the mental fortitude to have completed this race. With age and the adversity that comes with an adult life, I was psychologically hardened and able to focus on getting past pain to that finish line like I never would have as a young adult. These are the lessons that await those who take the challenge of multi-day cycling events.
Phase IV is sponsoring riders who want to take a stab at La Ruta this year, and next Wednesday night I will present all the science based training and nutrition that one needs to follow to meet this challenge a free lecture at Cynergy Cycles in Santa Monica.
This week's feature article highlights a few of the cycling challenges that await the those who dare to try events like these. While most are no where near as arduous as La Ruta, each will make you dig deep and learn where your strength comes from.

The Science of Going Big: Bike MS Coastal Challenge and La Ruta de Los Conquistadores
 | As a team member, Phase IV will help you train for and race this year's La Ruta de Los Conquistadores (L), while Cynergy Cycles will provide discounts and support for October's Bike MS Coastal Challenge (R). |
Bike MS Coastal Challenge, October 11-12
Our partner, Cynergy Cycles, will be sending a team to this October's two-day Bike MS Coastal Challenge from Santa Monica, California to Santa Barbara, just over 150 miles up the coast. Beginning at the Santa Monica Civic Center, the Coastal Challenge arrives via 30, 65, or 100-mile routes at Oxnard's San Buenventura State Beach before Sunday's 35 or 50 mile cruise to the finish at Santa Barbara City College. Donations raised as entry fees for the Coastal Challenge fuel the National MS Society's efforts to support clinical research and patient services for those affected by multiple sclerosis, the symptoms of which can be as far-reaching as blindness or paralysis. After a $70 registration fee, riders will raise at least $350 in donations. In return, Bike MS provides full route mechanical, food, and luggage transport support. The Cynergy Cycles Coastal Challenge team adds in-store benefits to those who ride as part of the shop team, including discounts on apparel, mechanical service, full bikes, and a rebate program. To date, donations by individuals have topped $11,000 and two teams have raised over $34,000 for the National MS Society.
Phase IV is discounting all our training and nutrition services for Bike MS riders to be sure you are well trained and prepared for this epic adventure.
Sign up for Bike MS through Cynergy Cycles here.
La Ruta de Los Conquistadores, November 6-8
Upping the ante in multi-day cycling events, Costa Rica's three-day La Ruta de Los Conquistadores takes riders across a beautiful, torturous route across five mountain ranges en route between the Pacific and Atlantic coasts of the island. Based on the original route that the Spanish military took in gradually conquering the island 500 years prior, La Ruta - a far more peaceful affair - takes riders across singletrack, fire roads, steep pitches and wrenching descents through rainforests and atop inactive volcanoes. La Ruta bills itself a grueling event, "a test of everything you've got," according to race organizers.
Phase IV is sponsoring teams who want to the this challenge with discounted registration and disocunted Phase IV services to be sure you are well trained and prepared for this epic adventure.
Learn more about La Ruta, or contact Phase IV to learn more about preparing and racing with us.
Preparing for events such as these, which are as much explorations into one's own psyche as they are challenges of fitness, is in itself a battle of discipline, passion, and persistence. To highlight its specialization in preparing athletes and laypersons for such challenging, rewarding, beautiful events, Phase IV will be sending a team to La Ruta, helping its riders with registration fees and preparation.
While your goals this year may not include taking on such rides - the Coastal Challenge, however, makes for a great baptism into the world of multi-day challenges - preparing for the physical challenges will enhance all aspects of your cycling and general fitness. Next Wednesday's (September 17th) complementary lecture, The Science of Going Big, at Cynergy Cycles delves into the science of preparing for more challenging events such as the Coastal Challenge and La Ruta. Phase IV founder and multi-day event veteran Robert Forster, PT, will bring the research to your doorstep, teaching you how to apply scientific principles in nutrition, heart rate training, strength training, recovery, and volume and load progression to improve the quality of your training for events of any magnitude.
Watch for the coming email announcement for The Science of Going Big, and RSVP to make changes in your training now that will pay off for years.

Inflammation: Friend or Foe?
by Rachel Suson, EP
Anything that threatens your health is experienced as a form of stress by your body and will stimulate a far-reaching and orchestrated physiological response. Whether it is emotional, physical, or from infectious invaders, there is a series of predictable bodily responses designed to first mitigate the threat and then heal the damage. Whether is a cut, bruise, cold, emotional trauma, or pushing too hard in the gym, the stress your body experiences triggers a common response know as GAS or the general adaptation syndrome. This is a well documented series of events that our body employs to return us to homeostasis, or business as usual; and it begins with inflammation.
But what exactly is inflammation and how does it affect us? Inflammation is your immune system's immediate response when it senses stress of any kind and reacts by rallying it's version of Seal Team 6; the brigades of white blood cells that are released from the bone marrow to jump start the healing process. This response is immediate and is typically short lived as the threat is defeated and your body heals. However, recent advances in science has found that the inflammation response can get stalled and begin to do more harm than good.

Previous Invicta FC atomweight fighter, Jessica Penn, goes into Ultimate Fighter 20 having moved up a weight class and boosted her fitness and stamina by incorporating heart rate training with Phase IV.
Ultimate Fighter competitor, Jessica Penn, moves up from the 105 lb weight class to test her mettle against bigger, stronger, tougher women. She turned to Phase IV Scientific Health and Performance Center to increase her stamina in the ring, using the same periodized heart rate training principles shared to equally great effect by fighters, cyclists, and laypersons looking merely to become healthier.
"I've been doing a lot of heart monitor training through a company called Phase IV. I've had a big problem with over training and just running myself into the ground and stuff like that," she told MMA Weekly. "So through this new training program it's really helped me evolve and progress more than I have in the past."
