Message from the CEO
 | In this week's feature article, read about how to periodize your training to defeat the fit-but-fat syndrome. |
Fighting the Fit But Fat Syndrome
Over the last three and a half decades, I have come in contact with tens of thousands of athletes and fitness enthusiast in my work as physical therapist and sports performance specialist. In my experience, with the exception of the genetically gifted elite athletes, almost all of them work out for body image. They want to look better! At the same time, almost all of those I meet are not happy with the results they have achieved from ever longer and more taxing workouts; they still don't like what they see in the mirror. Typically, after initially losing a few pounds from their workouts, their weight loss stalls and many even gain weight as they continue to train harder and harder.
The problem is human nature and the American work ethic. Human nature dictates that when we find a good thing, we want to do more of it. Workouts make us feel good, so we do more and more until we are overtrained or broken down with injury. Reinforcing this human tendency is the American work ethic. Nothing is worth having if you don't have to work hard to get it -- this seems to be the philosophy of most athletes and gym rats. This creates an overtrained population of sportsmen and fitness buffs who remain pudgy, bloated, and perform below their potential. The public is also lead astray by the media representation that professional athletes perform grueling workouts for hours each day, month in and month, out, to get their svelte and muscular physiques. Not true. We train elite world champion athletes on a maximum of 11 hours per week early in the training cycle with low intensity, longer duration workouts, and as little seven hours per week when we peak their fitness over the six weeks before competition.
You cannot fight human physiology. Training too much, too hard, and without built-in recovery or an aggressive recovery program leads to the all-too-common overtrained and frustrated, "fit but fat" athletes. When we are overly stressed, whether it be from work stress, emotional turmoil, or over exercising, our body produces too much of a hormone call cortisol. Cortisol directs our body to store fat and water and leaves us with poor performances and a bloated image in the mirror. This leads most people to work out even harder and longer, which only exacerbates the problem.
The solution to the "Fit But Fat" syndrome is found in scientific principles of periodization training, with a progressive work load, built-in recovery periods, and a rationally-driven variation to workouts in regular eight week periods. This is how the best athletes in the world are trained, and it is how we train all of our clients at Phase IV. If you are working out and not getting the body results you desire, call today for a complementary Health and Fitness Consultation and we'll get you on the right track with a science-based approach to your training and diet.
Training is only half the battle when it comes to achieving the body you want. Food is the other. This week's feature article includes an excerpt from my new book, Healthy Running Step by Step. Whether you are a runner, hiker, cyclist, swimmer, or a person who works out in the gym, this information highlights the nutritional strategies that will make your journey to the fit and lean body you have always wanted a lot easier.

Science-Based Nutrition for All of Us
 | Food is fuel, and your nutrition planning should be treated as such. Eschew processed foods and excess carbohydrate, allocating your food intake to meet your needs. |
Book Excerpt from Healthy Running Step by Step
Just like with your training, a science-based approach to what you put in your body and when you do it has a great effect on your ability to achieve your athletic and health goals. My approach to health and fitness involves guided exercise and an easy-to-follow, "close-to-the- earth" diet. Both are designed for one singular goal: metabolic efficiency-to make you a better butter burner. We have discussed the importance of precision heart-rate training to develop your fat-burning metabolism in in the past and now it's time to dial in your diet to further serve this goal.
All of us, especially athletes, need to alter our relationship with food. We need to view daily nutrition as the source of our life energy and focus on foods that further health, not disease. In recent decades, we've been told more about what not to eat than what to eat to stay healthy. Slowly, our relationship with food is changing as our food supply is being exposed as corrupted and unnatural. We are realizing that we need natural foods to help keep us healthy and make us stronger, leaner, and more resistant to disease. Fact: Most foods in the grocery store have been processed to such a degree by the giant food corporations that they have little nutritional resemblance to their root food sources. Based on extensive and costly research from farming to processing to packaging, the food industries try to get us hooked with appearance and addictive combinations of salt, sugar, and fat. Natural nutritional integrity be damned! What's worse is that medical and health experts have unintentionally played into the "laboratory-food-is-better-than-nature" syndrome by incorrectly tarring eggs, butter, and other healthy foods as health killers. Our knowledge of food and diet is rapidly growing and changing. Some of the old rules that were long accepted as gospel have been turned on their head in recent years, such as "carboloading" - ingesting a great pile of carbohydrates the night before a big workout or an event to "pack" the muscles with glycogen fuel. It has long been a tradition in the endurance world. But it's wrong. Here's the correct eating strategy: 1. Avoid processed carbs They prevent use of fats, spike insulin, and cause inflammation. Processed carbohydrates include bread, pasta, rice, crackers, baked goods, and other sweets. Processed carbs are dangerous for three reasons: * Carbs stop fat use. Carbohydrates in your diet are counterproductive in your effort to improve fat utilization. If you put carbs in your tank, your body will reach for them as fuel before it reaches for fat to make energy for workouts and daily living. * Carbs spike your insulin and put you to sleep. Example: If you eat a big bowl of pasta, the large insulin spike opens the cell windows and transports the carbs into the cells quickly, removing them from the bloodstream. That makes you sleepy or causes you to crave a sugar fix or caffeine to pick you up. * Carbs create inflammation in the gut, keeping you chronically inflamed and bloated. Inflammation in the body produces excessive cholesterol. You will learn that saturated fat is not killing us; it's the carbohydrates that do that. Read More . . .

Phase IV Running Science: The Biomechanics of Efficient, Injury-Free Running
by Robert Forster - PT
Becoming the efficient running machine that evolution has intended requires a sound strength & flexibility program and a basic understanding of a few simple laws of physics as they relate to the movement of our extremities. Improper running technique often results in injury and always results in an inefficient use of energy stores which is one major reason people "hit the wall" and wind up walking the last several miles of the marathon!
Running Mechanics are governed by some simple laws of physics. Human locomotion is a cyclic repetition of extremity movement performed to transport the body from one place to the other with the least amount of energy expenditure. Evolutionary changes in human anatomy occurring 2 million years ago allowed humans to run long distances in search of food. These changes in body type from ape-like tree dwelling creatures to the way we look today, provided for an efficiency of movement that improved our chances of survival. The arms evolved to be shorter and balance the cyclic movement of the legs better. The larger muscles of the leg migrated upward toward the hip to allow a lighter lower leg to swing through the air with greater ease and less wind resistance. The feet became bigger and provided more surface area of the sole to absorb the shock of the body crashing down on the earth and the lumbar vertebrae became larger to withstand the greater forces generated by a more upright posture.
It is now clear that the ability to travel long distances economically in competition for food is the key trait that forever separated humans from our predecessors and destined us to succeed like no other species to dominate the planet. We were born to run and have many anatomical features and specializations that permit us to run well. However our sedentary lifestyle has robbed our bodies of the strength and flexibility necessary to exploit these built in efficiencies. It takes specific training to regain our potential for efficient and economical long distance running.

Previous Invicta FC atomweight fighter, Jessica Penn, goes into Ultimate Fighter 20 having moved up a weight class and boosted her fitness and stamina by incorporating heart rate training with Phase IV.
Ultimate Fighter competitor, Jessica Penn, moves up from the 105 lb weight class to test her mettle against bigger, stronger, tougher women. She turned to Phase IV Scientific Health and Performance Center to increase her stamina in the ring, using the same periodized heart rate training principles shared to equally great effect by fighters, cyclists, and laypersons looking merely to become healthier.
"I've been doing a lot of heart monitor training through a company called Phase IV. I've had a big problem with over training and just running myself into the ground and stuff like that," she told MMA Weekly. "So through this new training program it's really helped me evolve and progress more than I have in the past."
