Message from the CEO

Healthy Running Step by Step, by Robert Forster, PT, and Roy M. Wallack, is due out this Fall and is a must-read for runners of all ages and abilities.
Joint Aches and Pains

It's the rare person I meet who doesn't have body aches and joint pain somewhere on a more or less constant basis. It is part of the human condition for everyone from young kids to senior citizens. We use our bodies every day to perform daily functions, transport us from one place to another, or as a tool for sport, exercise, and recreational activities. While we expect our bodies to work well, without pain and restriction, we do very little in the way of daily maintenance. Even the majority of athletic and fitness-minded people rarely work out to improve joint health -- in fact, most workouts have the tendency to damage joints.

Now, it is easier than ever to keep your joints healthy. As of January 1, 2014, you can visit Forster Physical Therapy without seeing a doctor first. Our physical therapists have been deemed qualified to evaluate and diagnose joint pain and body aches, and to help you adopt the healthy habits that work to return damaged and out-of-whack joints back to health while preventing others from going south on you. Many insurance companies, such as Blue Cross, UnitedHealthcare, Blue Shield, and Aetna, are now covering PT services without a doctor's prescription, and the others that have been slow to observe the new law, will soon do so too.

Between the staff at Forster Physical Therapy and at the Phase IV Scientific Health and Performance Center, we have your whole family covered; we can fix your joints, and then teach you how to keep them healthy with simple things you can do at home or the gym. If you suffer joint pain and body aches, call today for a physical therapy evaluation. Or if you want to avoid injury and pain, contact Phase IV staff and we will evaluate your current joint health, posture, alignment, strength, and flexibility, and design a time-effective program that meets your needs.

Cycling for Health and Weight Loss

Cycling is a fun, low-impact form of exercise that can improve nearly all aspects of health, and take you to new places too -- even trade cyclists (Fabian Cancellara, shown), stop to enjoy the views. Photo courtesy Cyclesport Magazine.

Cycling is a low-impact activity that almost anyone can do, and do for life. It is not only easy on the joints, but actually helps keep them healthy and improves overall health as well. When cycling workouts are performed on a well-fit stationery or outdoor bike and done in accordance with sound principles of exercise science, cycling can help keep you healthy or return you to good health! Cycling will help you achieve optimal body weight, prevent or treat health risk factors from high blood pressure to diabetes and even some cancers, and it's fun. This week, we present a review of the research that shows the positive links between cycling and health -- and next week, we have a special lecture presented by Aishea Maas, Phase IV Director of Science, for anyone who wants to get started on a cycling program for health, fitness, and weight loss.

Health Benefits of Cycling: A Systematic Review

by P. Oja, S. Titze, A. Bauman, B. de Geus, P. Krenn, B. Reger-Nash, T. Kohlberger

Conclusions

Overall, this review and evaluation of studies on cycling and health revealed relatively large numbers and diverse types of cycling-specic studies. They were consistent in showing a positive relationship between cycling and health and functional benets in young boys and girls and improvements in cardiorespiratory tness and disease risk factors as well as signicant risk reduction for all-cause and cancer mortality and for cardiovascular, cancer, and obesity morbidity in middle-aged and elderly men and women. The rigid clinical-type rating of this evidence showed it to be at best of strong to moderate strength and mostly inconclusive, although the bulk of the evidence comes from large prospective epidemiological studies, which are usually used as sucient indication for public health policy actions. While more robust research is needed to build a solid evidence base of the health benets of cycling, the existing state of knowledge reinforces the current public health eorts to promote cycling as an important contributor to improving population health.

Perspectives

Cycling represents a potentially powerful way to meet the recommended levels of physical activity for many populations. It is important to base current and future interventions on up-to-date evidence of the health benets specic to cycling. Until recently, the knowledge of the health benets of cycling has been mostly based on studies of commuting physical activity. As cycling was typically addressed together with walking, it was not possible to tease out the cycling-specic health eects. This review identied several new studies focusing on cycling-specic health outcomes. These studies are mostly of good quality. The ndings, which demonstrate a consistent dose-response for improved function and health, provide strong support for the promotion of cycling for public health.

Don't let an old injury keep you from enjoying races, morning runs, or attaining fitness goals. In the first part of Healthy Running Step by Step, authors Robert Forster, PT and Roy M. Wallack recommend the best training based on your fitness goals, including strength training, cross training, sprints, yoga, and plenty of rest. Part two goes a step further from other books by addressing the most modern methods of treatment -- including current studies on the amount of rest required, new and controversial surgical operations and injections, the newest and most effective gear, and barefoot/minimalist running as a form of healing. If you are recovering from an injury or want to prevent becoming injured in the first place, Healthy Running Step by Step is a must-have guide.

The Science of Fat: The Importance of Fat in Health and Performance

by Robert Forster, PT

There has been a lot written about fat in both the popular press and in sports related journals and magazines. Athletes and the sedentary alike comprise a society obsessed with fat. We are obsessed with fat in our diets and on our bodies and with good reason. Over 1 million people worldwide are overweight and in many countries including the U.S. these numbers are increasing at an alarming rate. Sixty five percent of U.S. adults are overweight compared with 56% a decade ago. Since 1980 obesity in children has escalated three-fold and now 15% of children over six are overweight. Scientists think this generation will actually have a shorter lifespan than its immediate predecessor. Additionally, two effects of obesity; high blood pressure and heart disease have recently made the top ten list of global health risks from the World Health Organization.

Athletes like to think any exercise will grant protection from the detrimental effects of fat. We have been told that aerobic exercise produces high-density lipoproteins (the good cholesterol) that protect the heart and blood vessels against stroke and heart attacks. However, recent research indicates that just because you are fit doesn't mean your body fat is not sabotaging your health. You may recall the deaths of Jim Fix, the running guru, and Ed Burke, the cycling physiologist, who both died of cardiovascular disease doing what they loved; working out. So exercise in general is not the panacea protection against disease as once thought. However, evidence is mounting to indicate more focused exercise can create the protection we are looking for against disease.
