Message from the CEO

Another Phase IV World Champion Crowned

Phase IV-trained Joe Warren took the interim Bellator Bantamweight World Championship in Atlantic City, New Jersey, this past weekend.

Joe Warren is the latest Phase IV athlete to win a World Championship. At age 37, he won a unanimous decision over Brazilian black belt, Rapheal Silva for the Bellatore Mixed Martial Arts Bantamweight World Title in Atlantic City, New Jersey, last Friday night. He is the first to win championship belts in two different weight classes and a certain future Hall-of-Famer.

Although this is one of a dozen or more World Championships we have helped athletes achieve over three decades and across several sports -- Track and Field, Professional Tennis, Olympic shooting, NBA, and now MMA -- this victory is the most rewarding for me. Joe's World Championship brings all of my professional experience in performance and health full circle back to combat sports, where my personal athletic career began. It is also a testament to Phase IV science and our specific skill sets, as it is the first World Championship for which we have designed all of Joe's training, nutrition, and weight cut procedures. Our approach to athletic performance is science-based, ethical, never driven by trendy fitness or nutrition fads, and always with the athlete's best interest in our hearts.

Joe's performance Friday night was also among the most inspiring athletic feats I have ever witnessed. He was as tenacious and focused as Pete Sampras battling through a four hour U.S. Open Final after coming off a potentially career-ending lumbar spine disc herniation to win an unprecedented 13 Grand Slam Championships. Joe was as technical and courageous as Jackie Joyner Kersee who, at the peak of the Cold War, battled scientifically-engineered Russian and East German women in the seven grueling events of the two-day Olympic Heptathlon, setting a world record and winning the Gold.

Joe Warren Crowned Interim Champion on Strength of Late Surge in Bellator 118 Headliner >> Sherdog.com

by Brian Knapp

The Joe Warren gas tank was there when he needed it.

Warren, 37, took a unanimous decision from Renovacao Fight Team's Rafael Silva and captured the interim Bellator MMA bantamweight championship in the Bellator 118 main event on Friday at the Revel Atlantic City in Atlantic City, N.J. The self-professed "Baddest Man on the Planet" swept the scorecards with identical 48-47 scores.

Silva (21-4, 2-1 Bellator) -- who replaced reigning 135-pound champion Eduardo Dantas on short notice -- moved to an early advantage, as he controlled much of the first two rounds with clean punches, occasional takedowns and superb close-quarters grappling.

However, it was not enough to deter the resilient Warren, who sustained significant damage to his left eye as a result of a fist-to-face encounter with a Silva right hand. The former Bellator featherweight champion turned the corner in round three and began to grind down Silva with clinches, takedowns and ground-and-pound. The fourth and fifth rounds followed a similar narrative, as Warren (11-3, 9-2 Bellator) rode his superior conditioning and dogged determination to a fourth straight victory.

Don't let an old injury keep you from enjoying races, morning runs, or attaining fitness goals. In the first part of Healthy Running Step by Step, authors Robert Forster, PT and Roy M. Wallack recommend the best training based on your fitness goals, including strength training, cross training, sprints, yoga, and plenty of rest. Part two goes a step further from other books by addressing the most modern methods of treatment -- including current studies on the amount of rest required, new and controversial surgical operations and injections, the newest and most effective gear, and barefoot/minimalist running as a form of healing. If you are recovering from an injury or want to prevent becoming injured in the first place, Healthy Running Step by Step is a must-have guide.

Nutrition Corner

Protein for Vegetarian Athletes

by Aishea Maas, Phase IV Director of Exercise Sciences

Protein is essential for all athletes, along with carbohydrates and fats. We use amino acids as building blocks, to make protein for our blood, skin, cartilage, muscles and bones, hormones and enzymes. At rest and during exercise, the body strives to conserve protein and therefore does not usually rely on it as a fuel source. People who have a well balanced diet, protein provides for less than 5% of energy expended.

Vegetarians need complete protein to get all the essential amino acids to avoid a negative protein balance. A vegetarian diet can supply all essential and nonessential amino acids from plant foods alone only if a variety of them are consumed throughout the day.

Complete vs. Incomplete Proteins

A complete protein means that all eight essential amino acids are present in the right amount. For example, foods from animal sources have complete proteins and some plant foods, like soy and quinoa, have complete proteins.
