 | Robert Forster, PT, will be ringside with Phase IV athlete Joe Warren (L) in Atlantic City. |
Sports are my business. Helping athletes, from amateurs to elites, achieve their goals has been my calling for more than 30 years. Although it was a natural progression from a young child watching pro wrestling and championship boxing with my Grandfather yelling at the TV, to becoming an NCAA wrestler myself, and then on to studying sports physical therapy, most are surprised to learn that I have never been a mainstream sports fan.
While I have had the great privilege to treat and train athletes from some of the greatest teams in all of sport, I don't follow any specific team and rarely watch team sports on TV -- unless one of my clients is competing. Instead, I have always been fascinated with individual performance. I enjoy studying individual athletes, their rise to stardom, and how they get the job done. Fascinated by the process whereby genetic gifts meet superior work ethic meets mental fortitude, how athletes navigate that journey is what interests me.
This journey has allowed me to step foot on some of the most hallowed grounds in all of sport: in five Olympic stadiums on the track helping Jackie Joyner Kersee win six Olympic medals; under the stadium working on Flo-Jo before she lined up in the blocks to set a world record; beside the court when Pete Sampras won an unprecedented 13th
Grand Slam title; in a mat-side chair coaching at the US Olympic Team trials right after legendary coach Dan Gable sat there just minutes before. These were exciting moments but I was too preoccupied with the task at hand to enjoy what most sport fans would love to experience.
This week I will work the corner at a championship prize fight for the first time when Phase IV Mixed Martial Arts fighter Joe Warren fights for the Bellatore Bantam Weight Title in Atlantic City, New Jersey. When the opening bell goes off I will be focused on Joe's performance and his health, but I must remember to give thanks to my Grandpa, the first sports fan I ever knew.

Phase IV Science in the Championship
 | Phase IV MMA athlete Joe Warren (L) will fight for the Bantamweight World Title on Friday, May 2nd. Photo courtesy Bellator. |
Next Friday in Atlantic City, New Jersey, Phase IV-trained fighter Joe Warren competes for the Bellatore Bantam Weight Mixed Martial Arts Title. This is the ultimate step in our foray into training athletes for combat sports. Although we have trained athletes to Olympic and professional championships in a variety of sports before, this is the first time we are poised to be at ground zero of a paradigm shift in sports training for any one sport.
Over ten years ago, when we first applied Phase IV sport science to local high school wrestling, we were met with great resistance. Detractors said that heart rate progression training was impossible in combat sports because the matches are so challenging that athletes have to go hard in training all the time to be prepared. The conventional wisdom held that over-training was the norm because it created the mental toughness needed to compete at the highest level. The fact that no other sport trains so hard all the time, for months on end without altering the training stress, didn't matter to the hardcore coaches and athletes in combat sports. Never mind that great athletes who could have gone on to win Olympic gold in wrestling or MMA titles too often get spit out the back of the pack from injury and burnout, this is the way they have always trained.
After proving that when an athlete's fitness is peaked for competition -- instead of over-trained -- great performances follow, we started to make some headway, winning a California State Championship. Taking that experience to the professional ranks of MMA, we found a like-minded coach in Marc Montoya at the Factory X gym outside Denver, Colorado. He understood that no athlete who trained like a combat athlete would ever set a world record in another sport, and that fitness needs to be a separate and sacred aspect of training that has to peak to complement technique and create great performances. Soon, all of his fighters began wearing heart rate monitors and following Phase IV heart rate progression science, holding back in training for up to 8 weeks to first develop a fitness base before progressing to the grueling workouts that forge champions.

Milk and Recovery
by Peak Performance
New research on milk suggests that it could be a cheaper and equally effective alternative to other sports nutrition products. Can milk give us what we need to attain maximum performance?
Recovery
After your workout, your body is in a state of stress and needs nourishment. Usually after exercise your body will be dehydrated, your blood insulin levels will be low, Cortisol and other "breakdown" hormones will be high, your glycogen (fuel stores) will be low or depleted, and your muscles will be in a state of breakdown. Your recovery nutrition should reverse all of the above and restore your to a hydrated fueled, recovered and muscle building state.
Milk research
Several studies have compared the post-training (weight training) effects of milk, soy protein and carbohydrate alone. In each of these studies, the subjects given milk as a post training recovery drink gained more lean muscle mass than their soy and /or carbohydrate counterparts.
In 2004, US scientists from Virginia Tech published one of the first studies comparing the effects of milk and a carbohydrate electrolyte beverage consumed in the immediate post workout period. In this study, 19 men consumed either a milk or carbohydrate electrolyte drink immediately following each workout, during a 10-week resistance training program. The authors concluded that the milk group tended to increase muscle mass but the magnitude of the gains weren't large enough to be considered statistically significant. They suggested that a more prolonged training and supplementation period would expand the trend for greater muscle mass gains in a milk group.
