This past weekend I, along with Forster Physical Therapy staff therapist Amy Tran, DPT, along with Phase IV Exercise Physiologist, Brian Washburn, manned the Phase IV Mobile Lab at the LA Roadrunners hill training session at Dodger Stadium. We performed over 35 complimentary injury evaluations on desperate runners who have found themselves injured just three weeks before the 2014 Asics Los Angeles Marathon. Their injuries were all of the common afflictions we have typically seen in runners: illiotibial (IT) band syndrome (covered in last week's newsletter), Achilles tendonitis, hamstring strains, shin splints, and plantar fascitis.
This is the problem: in the three decades I have been tending to runners, the training acumen among the average marathoner has progressed very little.
 | The Phase IV Mobile Lab brings assessment and treatment services to events such as the Malibu Triathlon and the LA Marathon. |
With all the advances in the science of endurance training, elite runners continue to break records but this information is not getting to the masses who need it the most. They still suffer needlessly. Our work with the Roadrunners over the last eight years has been focused on improving their knowledge of training science and injury prevention. Recently we were named as the exclusive physical therapy provider of the LA Marathon and we hope to make a bigger impact on all registered runners.
Please forward this newsletter to anyone running the marathon this year and let them know we will help them stay on track with complementary injury evaluations and performance consultations as they enter their last month of preparation for this year race.

Pain and Suffering at the 2014 Los Angeles Marathon
 | Phase IV is committed to helping runners of all ages and athletic backgrounds complete their marathons pain-free and in top condition. |
The 2014 Asics LA Marathon will be held March 9th on a course from Dodger Stadium to the beach in Santa Monica that is known for its diverse neighborhoods and scenic beauty. By the time the runners see the palm trees and smell the ocean as they make their way through the last few miles down San Vicente Blvd and on to Ocean Avenue, you would expect that all of them would feel more joy and jubilation than pain and suffering. Unfortunately, that will not be the case for over half of the nearly 20,000 runners registered in this year's race.
"While some of the runners will get to the end still feeling fresh and adequately inspired to finish strong and push the pace for the last miles, a full 50% of the field will be shuffling, walking and limping at this point and suffering needlessly as they inch their way to the finish line," estimates Robert Forster, PT.
Working with the LA Roadrunners Training Program for the last eight years, Forster's team of physical therapists and exercise physiologists have helped many frustrated runners get past injuries and finish the race in good form. They have seen every running injury imaginable and solved even the most elusive roadblocks to performance. Drawing on 30 years of experience tending to the needs of both Olympians and novice runners, the entire staff at Forster Physical Therapy and Phase IV Scientific Health and Performance Center are dedicated to getting runners across the finish line in good form.

Dangers in the Gym!
|
Robert Forster PT
CEO and Founder of Phase IV Scientific Health and Performance Center
Every day we see research that shows exercise is the best medicine to keep your body working well and for the prevention and treatment of many of the lifestyle diseases that plague our population. Exercise is powerful medicine and, like with all medicine, proper use is critical to get the best results and avoid injury.
For over 30 years I have traveled the world and witnessed all types of exercise programs. I evaluate every exercise move in a risk-benefit analysis. If the potential of injury is greater than the benefit, or if a better result can be attained with a safer move, the exercise is not prescribed.
Working the "Mirror Muscles"
Problem: The favorite muscle groups worked in nearly every gym in America are the ones we can see in the mirror. The biceps, pecs, abs and quads. This, along with the fact that we spend nearly every waking hour working our extremities in front of our body, only leads to bad posture and premature joint wear. These muscles are in fact typically too tight and strong for the muscles in the back of our bodies to work against to help us maintain an upright and erect posture with properly aligned joints, protected from disease.
Solution: Focus more on stretching the muscles in front of the body and perform twice as many pulling type exercises as you do pushing exercises. Pulling against resistance works the neglected muscles in the back of the joints whereas pushing works the muscles in front of the body. This is the way to create a truly balanced workout.
Always stretch BEFORE and AFTER each workout to stay injury-free.

Physical Therapist to Gold Medalists >> NBC4
 | Robert Forster, PT, treated skeet shooter Kim Rhode and track sprinter Allyson Felix in the run up to the London Olympics. |
Phase IV founder and CEO Robert Forster, PT, is a leading expert in physical therapy, physiology, and metabolic training, with over thirty years' experience with professional athletes -- experience he translates to athletes and everyday individuals of all levels as well.
In the run up to the 2012 London Olympics, Forster treated skeet shooter Kim Rhode for various impingement syndromes, developing her range of motion and strength in order to continue to compete at the highest level.
"We worked every day, doing small things. It's amazing how it's such a chain reaction," Rhode told NBC4's Dr. Bruce Hensel of her treatment.
Sprinter Allyson Felix, on the other hand, "was born with a great gift for speed. What we needed to develop was the strength and resilience of her body," Forster told Hensel of the 200-meter London gold medalist. "From [metabolic testing] we can see what kind of workouts they need to tax their energy systems and bring their efficiency higher. Not only does it diagnose where they're strong and where they're weak, but it lays out a map for the future of how to develop the right energy systems to make their fitness match the event they're in."
Both Felix and Rhode went on to win gold medals in London.
