Phase IV Sound Nutrition Series: Part III

Welcome to part 3 of the Phase IV Sound Nutrition series. The last two Phase IV Newsletters discussed the "myths" surrounding the dietary guidelines that have been espoused by medical and nutrition experts for the last 60 years. First, we discussed the bad rap associated with saturated fats in our diet which was based on the false premise that dietary cholesterol was clogging our arteries and ruining our hearts. Not only has scientific research debunked this myth, but new research shows that in an effort to steer the general public away from perfectly healthy foods such as eggs and red meat, these false claims steered us right to the actual culprit of dietary distresses: wheat!

It turns out that high cholesterol levels in the blood are caused, in large part, by the inflammation that results from our inability to digest a plant protein in wheat known as gluten. What's even worse is that in this same period of time the density of gluten in wheat has been increased six fold in an effort to grow heartier strains of crops. We have been misled and hoodwinked into becoming carb junkies.

Even before this research came to light, our experienced with weight loss clients, both athletic and sedentary, had lead us to a new paradigm long ago. After adjusting caloric intake and increasing exercise time spent in the optimum fat-burning heart rate zones, many clients remained pudgy and bloated. But when we reduced or eliminated wheat in their diets the weight finally came off as expected. It turns out that many also reported fewer digestive problems, improved energy, less bodily aches and pains and better mental focus, along with the weight loss.

The old-school sports nutrition that called for pasta loading, sweet performance drinks, gels, and bars has been replaced by smarter training and better workout nutrition. We now train athletes to use their own body fat to fuel their workouts and their daily activities and direct them to low-glycemic, wheat-free foods for their workouts that don't trigger inflammation or an exaggerated insulin release.

This week's feature article highlights wheat-free energy foods for athletes and some tasty recipes too. Enjoy!

At Phase IV we are continuously working to update our services and information to better inform our communities. Check out our newsletter and let us know your feedback. - info@phase-iv.net - 310.582.8212

The Nine Best Gluten-Free Foods for Runners

Courtesy: Rodale News

Considering that "gluten free" has become the healthy diet du jour, a lot of athletes probably wonder if giving up gluten, a problematic protein found in wheat, barley, and rye, can help them work harder and last longer. Are gluten-free foods the best foods for runners?

There's no scientific evidence that going gluten free will help the average person become a better runner, says Arthur Agatston, MD, in his book The South Beach Diet Gluten Solution. "There are, however, many athletes who have reported better performance following a gluten-free diet," he says, adding that Novak Djokovic became the top tennis player in the world after giving up gluten. Djokovic claims that going gluten-free gave him more energy, sharper focus, and an improvement in the asthma that had compromised his ability to win long matches.

"It certainly seems logical that if a gluten-sensitive athlete is experiencing fatigue, lack of mental focus, and other symptoms, such as stomach and joint pains, that he or she is likely to perform better gluten-free," Dr. Agatston adds. All of those are symptoms that can plague people who can't tolerate gluten but aren't clinically diagnosed with celiac disease, a disorder in which the body is unable to digest gluten proteins. But even if you're not gluten-sensitive, he says, going gluten free may give you an energy jolt, since the body utilizes extra energy to digest gluten, which can detract from your performance and just generally slow you down.

All the same, wheat provides carbs, and carbs provide fuel for athletes, right? While that is true, you can still get all the requisite energy from whole foods that are naturally gluten free. Joanna Sayago Golub, editor of the new Runner's World Cookbook gave us this list of the best gluten-free foods for runners that will keep you going all the way to the finish line (or at the very least, the end of your workout). Read More . . .

Dangers in the Gym!

Robert Forster PT

CEO and Founder of Phase IV Scientific Health and Performance Center

Every day we see research that shows exercise is the best medicine to keep your body working well and for the prevention and treatment of many of the lifestyle diseases that plague our population. Exercise is powerful medicine and, like with all medicine, proper use is critical to get the best results and avoid injury.

For over 30 years I have traveled the world and witnessed all types of exercise programs. I evaluate every exercise move in a risk-benefit analysis. If the potential of injury is greater than the benefit, or if the better result can be attained with a safer move, the exercise is not prescribed.

Are Your Bars and Gels Making You Fat?

So, you just finished today's workout. You've broken a good sweat, cooled down with stretching, and feel energized and ready to refuel your body. Before you reach down into your gym bag for a protein bar, be sure that your nutrition is helping and not hindering your fitness efforts.

If you walk down the supplement aisle in the supermarket, you can find a large variety of pre- and post-workout gels, bars, powders, and other solutions -- all supposedly formulated to give you the optimum results for your workout. Unfortunately, marketing can easily mislead even the best-laid intentions. Using these products strategically can help recovery and aid weight loss; however, it is important to know when to use these products during your training cycle.

Studies show that men and women of normal weight women typically overestimate how many calories they burn during a workout. This overestimation can lead to an overcompensation of calorie intake (i.e. "training to eat" as opposed to "eating to train"). Many of the most common nutritional supplements offer little more than processed sugar, carbohydrate, and unhealthy fats. Consuming these products in excess of calorie expenditure can throw you into a caloric surplus, leading to unintentional weight gain and ruining your efforts in the gym.
