MMA star Joe Warren fights nenullxt week after 12 weeks on the Phase IV Heart Rate Training Program based on VO2 testing and specifically designed for MMA. This is the first full MMA training camp ever conducted based entirely on a Periodization heart rate progression. Phase IV exercise physiologist Aishea Maas and myself worked closely with his coach Marc Montoya at his FactoryX Muay Tai gym in Denver to coordinate all the components of his training.  Running, pad work, grappling, Ju Jitsu, and ground and pound workouts were worked into a schedule that brought his fitness to a peak in a scientifically rational sequence based on his personal fitness profile.
They said heart rate based training couldn't be done in combat sports but we know from our work with other elite athletes across all sports that the science is sound.  Montoya's recent tweet says it all "We have improved our entire training regimen thanks to the science of Phase IV and Forster Physical Therapy. Joe Warren has made incredible fitness gains and now we have applied the same science to train our highly ranked fighters Scott Jorgensen and Chris Comozzi for their upcoming UFC fights."

Mixed Martial Arts Gets Scientific

Joe Warren is known as the "Baddest Man on the Planet" and he earned it! First from his days as a NCAA Division I wrestling All American, then a Greco Roman Wrestling World Champion, and next a Mixed Martial Arts World Champion. He has done it all and his experience is the foundation for his insightful commentary  and coaching on Spike TV's "Fight Master",a mixed martial arts based reality show featuring 32 fighters competing for a spot in Bellator's welterweight tournament.  Warren is also the poster child for the emerging Phase IV Combat Sport Scientific Training Initiative.

 

To prepare for comeback into the Octagon on September 7 against Nick Kirk, Joe has begun to train again. And, at 36 years old, Joe knows that time is not on his side as he makes this final push to win the Bantamweight belt. Leaving nothing to chance, Joe has enlisted Phase IV Scientific Training and Performance Center in Santa Monica, California to give him the fitness edge he needs to succeed in this youth dominated sport.

Genius Tweaks for "Go-To" Moves in the Gym

Everyday we see research that shows exercise is the best medicine to keep your body working well and for the prevention and treatment of many of the lifestyle diseases that plague our population.  Exercise is powerful medicine and like all medicine, proper use is critical to get the best results and avoid injury.

 

For over 30 years I have traveled the world and witnessed all types of exercise programs. I evaluate every exercise move in a risk-benefit analysis. If the potential of injury is greater than the benefit, or if the better result can be attained with a safer move, the exercise is not prescribed. 

 

Side Plank for Adductor (Inner Thigh) Strengthening

 

Performance Teak:

 

The adductor muscles of the inner thigh are a large muscle group that function not only to stabilize the pelvis but also improve agility as these muscles are active in side to side cutting movements. They also improve speed in running, cycling and swimming by assisting moving the thigh both in flexion and extension in these straight ahead sports.

   

To strengthen the adductor group while in the side plank position simply bend the bottom knee slightly holding the bottom foot off the ground and bearing your weight on the instep of the top foot. THE TOP KNEE MUST BE LOCKED IN THE FULLY STRAIGHT POSITION TO AVOID PLACING DAMAGING FORCES ON THE INSIDE OF THE KNEE. Hold for a five or ten count then rest and repeat building up to ten repetitions.

Robert Forster P.T. has practiced Sports Physical Therapy in Santa Monica, CA, for over 30 years. Robert has lectured throughout the States and Europe on Sports Rehabilitation and safety in exercise. He has worked with leaders in the Exercise Industry such as Jake "Body by Jake" Steinfeld and Kathy Smith. Robert has been appointed to the Governor's Council of Physical Fitness Advisory Board.

 

Robert served as a private physical therapist at the 1984, 1988, 1992, 1996 and 2012 Olympics for Olympians Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Florence "Flo-Jo" Joyner, Alyson Felix and their teammates who have won a combined 43 Olympic Medals under his direct care.
