Dog Days of Summer Fitness
If you are like most of our clients when we first meet them, your summer fitness program is getting stale by this time of the year. In Southern California, where there are still months of hot weather ahead, the key to building on early summer fitness is periodic variation in your workouts. We know from our work with elite athletes that the body requires that exercise programs change every eight weeks to continue to make gains in fitness and meet the desired goals of the workouts. This basic law of exercise science is ignored in gyms and workouts all across the world and it's is the number one reason the general public gets bored, burned out and give up on their workouts when results stall.
This principle of exercise science is called Periodization and it is how all elite and professional athletes train. It is built on the fact that the body will characteristically adapt to any stress placed on it in about eight weeks, and then it's time to change the stress if further gains are to be made. If the kind of stress placed on your body doesn't change after the eight week adaptation period then the body gets stale and fitness gains evaporate as the body enters the over trained state, even if you don't think you are training hard enough to get over trained.
Likewise, those personal trainers who think doing something different every workout is aligned with the principles of Periodization are missing the point. The body will adapt to that type of schizophrenic training too, and then what's left to switch to and create new stress. To create a new stress and force your body to respond you have do something different than you have been doing the last few months. If you have been doing longer, low heart rate workouts then it is time to do high intensity training in the form of intervals. Alternatively, if you are like most and think only hard exercise produces results, then it time to begin longer duration, low intensity ( low heart rate ) workouts. This week's lecture at Cynergy Cycles will address the benefits of science based variation in exercise.
At Phase IV we are continuously working to update our services and information to better inform our communities. Check out our newsletter and let us know your feedback. - info@phase-iv.net - 310.582.8212

Phase IV Athlete Makes Mental Adjustment and Makes World Team in Woman's Wrestling
Long time Phase IV athlete, Vicki Anthony, achieved a new level of success in wrestling by making the USA Senior World Team for the 1st time. Vicky, who was the first elite USA wrestler to begin training with Phase IV science back in 2009, had long ago achieved the fitness edge but now has found the mental edge to win, and she did it wrestling up a weight class at 51kg/112.25 lbs. After placing a disappointing second place at the World Team Trials at 48kg/105lbs in June, Vicky went to Russia with her coach for the University World Games and didn't place but received some mental coaching about slowing her mind and trusting herself. She returned home for World Team Qualifier, moved up a weight class and by slowing her mind down, and trusting herself to wrestle with more patience she crushed all of her competition. They were all solid opponents too, including World Champions and accomplished wrestlers.

Victoria was shorter, lighter and seeded lower than the girls she wrestled. But that didn't stop the hard-charging Anthony from winning a championship at the Women's World Team Wrestle-Offs on recently at Palmer High School. Anthony, a two-time Junior World champion, swept past World Team member Jessica Medina in two straight matches to earn a trip to next month's World Championships. Anthony won the Challenge Tournament earlier in the day with wins over the No. 4, No. 1 and No. 2 seeds before downing Medina, who had earned a spot in the finals by virtue of winning April's U.S. Open.
Anthony, who wrestles for Simon Fraser University, made her first Senior World Team. "I'm extremely excited," Anthony said. "It was really nice to pull this out against some super tough competitors. I just allowed myself to open up and wrestle. I got my mind right and didn't put unnecessary pressure on myself."

Dangers in the Gym!
|
Everyday we see research that shows exercise is the best medicine to prevent and treat many of the lifestyle diseases that plague our population. However, many people are not sure what to do in the gym and they are rightfully concerned about getting injured. Exercise is powerful medicine but proper dosage and use is critical to avoid problems and assure success.
At Phase IV we evaluate every exercise in a risk-benefit analysis. If the potential of injury is greater than the benefit, or if the same result can be attained with a safer move, the exercise is not prescribed. In this new weekly column we will address one dangerous exercise each week.
Are Weight Machines Ruining Your Joints?
There is a generally held belief that weight machines are safer (i.e. less likely to cause injuries) than free weights. Most gym machines take the user through a limited and defined path of joint movement thought to be safe for all bodies. They are designed so the mechanical axis of rotation is aligned with the mechanics of the human joint that it targets. The problem is that even with adjustable components it is impossible to assure the correct joint position for the wide range of body types, sizes and lengths that may use them. Also the resistance is artificially isolated in one direction and requires little stabilization of the joint involved for the targeted muscle to exert force. In this way the forces exerted on joint structures is unevenly distributed and can be damaging. When using ill-fitting weight machines damage can go undetected and become permanent before you know it.
