Inertia: The tendency of a body at rest to remain at rest or a body moving in a straight line to stay in motion in a straight line unless acted on by an outside force.

The desire to improve your fitness can come from a variety of motivations. You might want to lead a more active lifestyle, overcome chronic joint pain, and compete in an athletic event or simply look and feel better. Health issues can be the most urgent motivator following bad news from a recent visit to the doctor's office, or when you see a parent's health decline and realize your genetic predisposition to disease. Whatever the reason, we all need a goal to change our behavior and the bigger the cost of failure the more likely we are to stay on track. When the doctor tells you will likely develop diabetes or heart disease if you don't change your diet and exercise habits or your spouse says you're getting a little flabby we tend to stay the course of our fitness endeavors.

For athletes and those who have been actively training fitness for years and already know the benefits of staying fit we need to continually set new goals to keep motivation high and stay the course. For some friends and me, it's longer and harder athletic events that, as we say, "keeps us out of the bars at night and gets us out of bed in the mornings to train". Whether it be competing  at the Masters National Wrestling Championships, or the Leadville 100 mile mountain bike race, if you don't train hard and smart, you can be sure when the whistle blows  or the starter's gun goes off, it's gonna hurt!

4 Reasons Why You Need a Coach

by Rachel Suson, Phase IV Exercise Physiologist

"No man is an island," said the poet John Donne. That quote resonates still today even with the advent of the Internet, Facebook, and LinkedIn. Though social media may give the illusion of ultimate connectivity, studies show that more people are feeling isolated today than they were 30 years ago. This reflects the false pretense that with so information on the Internet we can figure everything out ourselves, that we do not need help or guidance from other people. However, it is no coincidence that the most successful and driven people of the world credit much of their success to a coach, parental figure, or role model. In the pursuit of health and fitness the same holds true. Even Olympic Champions with all their God given talent and exceptional drive need coaches. In fact, in both rehabilitation and fitness training, human nature does not equip us to make the best decisions regarding what we need to do, how much of it we need to do and how often. That's why Physical Therapists and coaches exist. Here are 4 of the most important reasons why you need a coach and what to look for.

1. Experience

The first quality to look for a coach is experience. Typically, when starting a new fitness program, or when deciding to take on a goal (marathon, strength training, fat loss) the task can seem daunting--especially when you are just starting. The bigger the goal, the bigger the payoff, but often the more terrifying it is to start. Finding a coach that has the education and the experience to get you to your goal is critical. Investigate their record of success with others in your similar position. This creates the trust that you will need to stay the course when the going gets tough. In addition, their experience will address unforeseen problems and road blocks to your success before you encounter them.

Dangers in the Gym!

Everyday we see research that shows exercise is the best medicine to prevent and treat many of the lifestyle diseases that plague our population. However, many people are not sure what to do in the gym and they are rightfully concerned about getting injured. Exercise is powerful medicine but proper dosage and use is critical to avoid problems and assure success.

At Phase IV we evaluate every exercise in a risk-benefit analysis. If the potential of injury is greater than the benefit, or if the same result can be attained with a safer move, the exercise is not prescribed. In this new weekly column we will address one dangerous exercise each week.

Full Range of Motion Bench Press

(works pecs, shoulders and triceps)

Pushing the barbell off the chest positions the shoulder in a vulnerable position subjecting the front of the joint to excessive forces. The biceps tendon is stretched excessively and can damage a structure deep in the joint call the labrum which often can only be repaired with surgery.

Alternative: Only lower the barbell to a position approximately five inches off your chest and then raise to the starting position. i.e. don't let your elbows pass the plane of the body when lowering the weight.
