Adolescent Health and Fitness

The most rewarding facet of my career as a Physical Therapist is helping young people get past debilitating injury and back to the things they love to do. As a Performance Specialist at Phase IV, helping young people meet their performance goals and earn athletics honors or a college scholarship brings great satisfaction as well. It is especially gratifying when a kid uses his athletic talents and hard earned fitness to open educational opportunities that might not be available otherwise.

As a life-long athlete I know the value of competition in shaping the lives of adolescents, but teaching non-athletes health and fitness principles and specific workouts that will serve them throughout life is a legacy of which I am the most proud. There is a time in every child's life when their physical appearance and prowess becomes a major focus and to be present in that moment and provide safe and effective strength and flexibility workouts and the knowledge to help them understand how to maintain their health throughout life is the best use of my education and experience. For overweight kids and those with a poor body image learning how exercise and healthy eating can change their body and outlook is a life changing experience. The fitness culture is too often focused on quick results and hype surrounding body image and health and as a parents and clinicians we have to send the right message: fitness and health is a lifelong process not a 90 day program to create six pack abs!

At Phase IV we are continuously working to update our services and information to better inform our communities. Check out our newsletter and let us know your feedback. - info@phase-iv.net - 310.582.8212

Phase IV Summer Fitness Academy

At Phase IV training the student athlete is our most important task. Developing a young athlete to their greatest potential takes a long-term perspective, a sound scientific approach, support, and patience. The Phase IV Fitness Academy utilizes our knowledge in physical therapy, exercise physiology, nutrition and coaching - the latest in sports sciences - to focus on the long-term health and development of the student athlete.

With the right approach to exercise and diet, puberty is a once in a lifetime opportunity to create the most dramatic bodily changes. At this stage of development, hormones provide the physiological basis to radically change bodies and develop stronger, leaner athletes, with improved balance, agility and speed- but only proper training provides the stimuli to achieve these results.

Phase IV Student Fitness Academy was created to bring 30 years of experience in training elite Olympic and Professional athletes to the children of our community. As the parent of a Santa Monica High School student athlete, I found a great need to implement a scientific approach to student fitness and athletic preparation. We have used this science based program successfully to help athletes win 42 Olympic Medals, several High School State Championships and dozens of US and World Records in a variety of sports. Adolescent training programs must be anchored in science, have a long term perspective and require patience and guidance.

Most private student athlete training facilities are not scientific in their approach to fitness. The Phase IV Student Fitness Academy teaches age appropriate strength and flexibility exercise to promote injury prevention, create functional joint stability, improved posture, and proper nutrition to fuel your child to their highest possible potential in sport.

PRE-PUBESCENT ATHLETE PROGRAM

Before the hormonal surge accompanying puberty, the pre-pubescent student athlete has little potential to build muscle and develop strength. This does not mean, however, vital strides towards improving performance cannot be made now. It is critical to get a jump on the developmental issues that accompany the growth spurts of athletes at this age. Read More . . .

Dangers in the Gym!

Everyday we see research that shows exercise is the best medicine to prevent and treat many of the lifestyle diseases that plague our population. However, many people are not sure what to do in the gym and they are rightfully concerned about getting injured. Exercise is powerful medicine but proper dosage and use is critical to avoid problems and assure success.

At Phase IV we evaluate every exercise in a risk-benefit analysis. If the potential of injury is greater than the benefit, or if the same result can be attained with a safer move, the exercise is not prescribed. In this new weekly column we will address one dangerous exercise each week.

Strength Training for Teens

The typical adolescent begins to be concerned with body image right about the time of puberty and many want to rush into the gym to build their body. With the hormonal surge occurring this is a very advantageous time to transform their young body and improve confidence.

Problem: Young people in the gym, if left to their own devices, are at high risk for injury and creating a dysfunctional physique that can last a life time. Just as this period in physical development can he exploited to mold young bodies in a favorable way, so too can ill designed workouts and bad lifting techniques create muscle imbalances that will alter posture, create faulty joint mechanics and lead to chronic injury later in life.

Too often, young gym users will look to build the "mirror" muscles: pecs, biceps, abs and quads at the expense of more balanced muscle development. The problem is that the human physique is naturally too strong in the front of the body and too weak in the back and further strengthening the mirror muscles will lead to poor posture and unstable joints. Instead of working the muscles visible in the mirror we all need to work the muscles in the back of the body: erector spinae, shoulder blade stabilizers, gluts and hamstrings. These are the muscles that stabilize the spine, hips, shoulders and knees and create good posture.

Similarly, the uneducated young weightlifter has the tendency to skip the stretching exercises before and after the weight workout. Before workouts stretching will improve the way muscles and the surrounding joints function and thus minimize the risk of injury. During workouts muscles shorten, and if left to recover that that way they will become permanently tight and lead to dysfunctional movement patterns, poor posture and future joint problems..
