Don't Miss This Great Opportunity

This is an exciting time for the science of health and fitness. Every day we see new research that directs us to live an active lifestyle and consume a natural "close to the earth" diet to ward off the common ills associated with life in the modern world. Sometimes, however, this information is presented in the lay press in a confusing and contradictory fashion and we are left wondering how to prioritize our health strategies to avoid disease and maintain well-being. We are often left hoping to find someone who is knowledgeable and experienced in these issues to help us wade through all the data and pull together actionable solutions for us to follow. We now have this valuable source of experience and know-how when it comes to healthy living and health vigilance and we are so excited to have him back tonight for another great Phase IV lecture! Dr. Renna is a nationally recognized expert on preventative medicine and has appeared on 48 hours and Extra! He will present a compelling and simple approach to manage the relationship between stress and motivation in your life. His talks are always interesting and thought provoking and no one ever leaves without new tools to direct them to a healthier life! Please call 310.582.8212 or RSVP on Facebook today as space is limited. Bring a friend!

How to Construct a Metabolic Workout

Using Phase IV Science by Aishea Maas, Director of Science

So, after your yearly physical, the doctor tells you to start exercising to lose some weight or reduce health risk factors that were identified in the exam. But what kind of workouts, how often, how long and how hard should you workout to lose weight and/or improve your health?  Longer duration, continuous "metabolic" workouts (also known as cardio) including walking, running, cycling, swimming or elliptical training, etc., have been shown to provide the most significant health benefits. These type of aerobic workouts offer the greatest degree of protection against disease including heart disease, vascular disease, diabetes and even certain cancers and mental health conditions. This type of exercise has also been shown to help with stress management and improve learning. This has led to the "Exercise is Medicine" slogan that helped spread the word about the value of low intensity workouts. However, just like any medicine, the dosage, frequency and intensity of workouts matter. To make workouts effective and your program sustainable for life consider these guidelines.

Program Design

Frequency: All reasonable workouts provide health benefits, however, typically one needs to workout 2-3 times per week to achieve long term results.

Duration: It is important to start slow and build up in terms of the length of your workouts. We have found it's best to use time and not mileage to guide your workouts. This allows for some variation depending on how you feel each day rather than push yourself to cover a specific distance.

Intensity:
Low intensity, longer duration workouts teach your body to burn fat as a primary fuel 24/7 and this holds obvious implications for your body weight. If you pick up the pace (intensity) of your workout your body will shift to burning carbohydrates and you will have missed the opportunity to use your workout time to reprogram your metabolism to prefer fats. So start slow and stay slow to get the best results.

Dangers in the Gym!

Everyday we see research that shows exercise is the best medicine to prevent and treat many of the lifestyle diseases that plague our population. However, many people are not sure what to do in the gym and they are rightfully concerned about getting injured. Exercise is powerful medicine but proper dosage and use is critical to avoid problems and assure success.

At Phase IV we evaluate every exercise in a risk-benefit analysis. If the potential of injury is greater than the benefit, or if the same result can be attained with a safer move, the exercise is not prescribed. In this new weekly column we will address one dangerous exercise each week.

Dangers in the Gym: Proper Footwear for the Gym

Problem: Wearing inappropriate footwear for gym activities will hamper performance, diminish fitness benefits, and more importantly, it can cause injury. Athletic shoes are now designed specifically for different activities. Your foot interacts in unique ways with the various surfaces encountered in the gym. On any given day you might take an exercise class on hard wood floor or yoga class on a mat, lift free weights on a concrete floor or run on the treadmill deck, and interface with the pedals of a bike or the foot plate on various weight machines. No one shoe will allow for the correct bio- mechanics for all these activities. The wrong shoe can create damaging forces in the joints of your foot, ankle, knee, hip and all the way up the spine. For instance, traditional running shoes are wedged slightly towards the heel and while they are appropriate for run and walk workouts but they will subject the knee to excessive sheer forces when used for doing free weights exercises. Soft sole shoes collapse under the forces created when cycling and will not only waste energy but mal-align the joints of the foot, ankle, and knee causing strain on tendons and ligaments.

Solutions for Back Pain in Athletes
By Robert Forster, Physical Therapist

Back pain in athletes' presents in several different patterns relating to the origin of the pain source. In spite of advances in imaging and other diagnostic testing most often the diagnosis is made by the clinician analyzing the pain patterns, (i.e. when it hurts). Pain while sitting or difficulty standing up straight after sitting, and pain with a cough or sneeze or lifting heavy items all indicate the pain maybe from an injury to the intervertebral disk. Pain that hurts more with standing than sitting is often associated with sacroiliac dysfunction or one of the joints that connects one vertebra to the next, the facet joint. Pain bending backwards also indicates the facet joints while muscle and ligament injuries might hurt more with exertion.  Read More . . .
