Stop the Madness!

In the world of health and fitness there is always a new and trendy approach that is presented as the end all program promising rapid results and too good to be true value propositions. The problem is that these claims are made year after year and they are not necessarily based on new scientific research but instead they are usually cooked up by a marketing team based on what focus groups show the public thinks they want. Over the last four decades of the modern fitness movement this approach has not produced a leaner, fitter or healthier population of Americans. Sadly we are a fatter and more disease prone nation and this includes those who workout regularly and still don't achieve their goals.

Steve Jobs, who famously steered the Apple corporation to world wide dominance in personal technology, directed his staff to deliver not what people think they need but what their tech team expertise could create to fill the needs that the public were not even aware of. The same is true in health and fitness. We see our job as a conduit between scientific research showing what is making us fat and unhealthy as we age and delivering the exercise and nutrition programs to address the needs of a public who is either too young to worry about these future problems or too distracted by all the hype to focus on the real solutions.

A good case in point is the new trendy mantra among fitness professionals who have recent taken research on static stretching completely out of context to advise the public they do not need to stretch but instead perform a "dynamic warm up" before working out. Since the study sited in this ill advised directive only looked at the effects on sprint performance immediately after static stretching (not to mention the protocol did not at all follow what sprinters typically practice before a race), it's relevance to the general public is nil, except that it is well known most people are resistant to stretching. We know from more applicable research and as physical therapists and sports performance specialists working with clients everyday that static stretching is the most effective way to maintain the range of motion of joints and prevent dysfunction and joint disease. Our task would be so much easier if we did not have to help people first unlearn the principles propagated by fitness trends and the faulty application of research and get them to focus on what they will need to live a long, active and healthy life.

Fit at 50 Book Review

By Rachel Suson, Phase IV Exercise Physiologist

As exercise physiologists, physical therapists and performance specialists our challenge is to communicate complex scientific concepts regarding training, nutrition and recovery to athletes of all abilities and with varied levels of knowledge, in simple, easy to follow directions and explanations. Our greatest gratification comes when one of our clients grasps the scientific concepts so well that after only two years training he not only applies them to achieve All American status in age group Triathlon and place 2nd in the Sprint Duathlon National championships, but goes on to write a book about the scientific training principle we taught him to use. In his book, Fit at 50: Back From the Brink, Naturally, Matthew McLaughlin explains in concise, easy to relate terms the process of achieving optimal performance and health.  As a professional, father, and husband, McLaughlin relates his journey from successful high school and college athlete to frustrated adult weekend warrior sabotaged by training missteps, injuries and failures. He goes on to recount his reluctant acceptance of the training based training concepts that ultimately allowed to exceed his own expectations for Sport. By way of of his own personal experiences as an athlete who came back to achieve performances as an (lose "aging") athlete who came back and how he finally found the science based training concepts he needed to succeed.

His story is an invaluable read for anyone seeking to re-kindle their competitive career or looking to get fit and lean for reasons relating to health and well being. McLaughlin presents a straightforward "how to" guide for the aging athlete to train with science and achieve their highest genetic potential while enjoying the journey. He presents a balanced approach to training with safety and longevity paramount to the process while outlining the Periodization Training principles used by professional and elite athletes around the world. Matt explains how Periodization Training is a road map to success because it is based on the science of human adaptation as it relates to the stress of training. By way of his own personal experiences as an aging athlete who came back to achieve performances that approach those of his college years, Matt maintains his humility and sense of humor about his journey. He discusses his failures and successes and how slow steady change has fostered habits that serve him year after year as he progresses as a maturing athlete. Younger athletes tend to be more motivated by aesthetic goals and often look to achieve quick results. This impatient approach creates an artificial ceiling of fitness as apposed to those who take the time to achieve a well developed and balanced fitness foundation and then find their fitness improvements are more extensive. Matt has found, as we have, that nearly half of all the time spent on your sport must be focused on injury prevention and recovery strategies. Many know how to work hard; those who work hard on recovery have the greatest gains.

While the title is Fit at 50, this book is truly a book for anybody at any age that is ready to put in the work it takes to get fit for life.  Although McLaughlin took decades to learn these concepts, he describes them in a simple to follow manner that easily empowers the reader to take their fitness in their own capable hands.

Matt's book is available at our two locations and on amazon.com

Dangers in the Gym!

Everyday we see research that shows exercise is the best medicine to prevent and treat many of the lifestyle diseases that plague our population. However, many people are not sure what to do in the gym and they are rightfully concerned about getting injured. Exercise is powerful medicine but proper dosage and use is critical to avoid problems and assure success.

At Phase IV we evaluate every exercise in a risk-benefit analysis. If the potential of injury is greater than the benefit, or if the same result can be attained with a safer move, the exercise is not prescribed. In this new weekly column we will address one dangerous exercise each week.

Working the "Mirror Muscles"

Problem: The favorite muscle groups worked in nearly every gym in America are the ones we can see in the mirror; the biceps, pecs, abs and quads. This, along with the fact that we spend nearly every waking hour working our extremities in front of our body, only leads to bad posture and premature joint wear. These muscles are in fact typically too tight and strong for the muscles in the back of our bodies to work against to help us maintain an upright and erect posture with properly aligned joints, protected from disease.

Meet the Staff
AMY T. TRAN, DPT, PHYSICAL THERAPIST
Amy received her Bachelors in Exercise & Sport Science from Oregon State University in 2007, and earned her Doctorate of Physical Therapy from the University of Southern California in 2011.   As a former competitive water polo player, swimmer, and gymnast, she developed a strong interest in helping athletes overcome injuries and achieve functional goals.   One of the highlights of Amy's career was working with an American wheelchair rugby player with a spinal cord injury who was a gold medalist at the Paralympics; she was inspired to think outside the standard orthopedic box and effectively return him to competition.   Amy currently treats various orthopedic and spinal conditions, over-use injuries, shoulder and knee pain, and has additional professional interests in treating Temporomandibular (TMJ) dysfunctions, brain injury, and vestibular impairments.   For several years she has done research on pain management and in 2011 assisted in the research for current evidence and systematic reviews to create practice guidelines for the treatment of these topics. In her free time, you will find Amy dancing at the studio or surfing on the beach. She loves dance and has experience in performance and teaching.

Tesimonial:

Amy, Thank you for your dedication to my physical therapy following surgery. Your persistent encouragement and positive attitude continues to keep me focused on achieving a high level of physical rehabilitation.

Entering Forster Physical Therapy three months ago, I had no arm strength, my shoulder felt recently dislocated, and I lacked sufficient hand and wrist strength to hold an empty 8oz glass. I know I have additional work ahead of me, but I am following your regimen regularly (as directed), my shoulder is on the mend, and I now have little problem holding a full glass of water. You are truly an asset to Forster PT. - Scott
