The fitness industry seems to make the pursuit of health and fitness more complicated than it need be. Advances in health research has provided the requisites for a healthy body and reduced health risk factors, and it's easier than most trainers would have you believe. It turns out we don't need to weight train like Seal Team 6 to protect our joints and maintain muscle mass as we age. Instead, all that is needed to keep joints functioning well is light resistance for the smaller muscles around the joints and more stretching. Muscle mass is best maintained with a progressive program that only requires heavier loads in the gym on an intermittent basis throughout the year. Likewise we don't need to run a marathon or a six minute mile to create the metabolic health that protects us from heart disease and diabetes. We now know that all the health benefits come from low intensity aerobic paced workouts and the protective benefits of running are lost after about 20 miles a week and speeds faster than an eight minute per mile pace. Call or click today for a complementary Phase IV Health and Fitness Consultation and learn how to achieve your goals by training smarter, not harder!
At Phase IV we are continuously working to update our services and information to better inform our communities. Check out our newsletter and let us know your feedback. - info@phase-iv.net - 310.582.8212

Characteristics of a Safe and Effective Stretching Program
| Kneeling Hip Flexor |
Stretching Before and After Every Workout: The most misinformed aspect of stretching is that it is dangerous to stretch the body when it is "cold". I agree when you are dead you should not stretch; however, shy of death our bodies are never "cold". While collagen stretches better when the tissue is warmed up, it stretches just fine at the normal resting body temperature. To bear this out all we need to do is look at dancers; ballerinas don't go in the dance studio and run around to break a sweat before they stretch. The first thing they do is walk over to the bar and put their leg up and stretch and they generally have better flexibility than any other athlete. Yogis, martial artists, and gymnasts all have renown levels of flexibility and the first thing they do is stretch, then warm up and stretch some more. As long as the stretching positions are safe and we follow the "subsiding tension" principle, then stretching before workouts and competition is safe and effective to increase performance and help avoid injury. Those who think they don't need to stretch before workouts as long as they "start slow and warm up" are seriously misdirected or they are just lazy. I hear this from time pressed coaches and athletes all the time, but the truth is if you don't have time to stretch you don't have time to work-out! Read More

Dangers in the Gym! |
Everyday we see research that shows exercise is the best medicine to prevent and treat many of the lifestyle diseases that plague our population. However, many people are not sure what to do in the gym and they are rightfully concerned about getting injured. Exercise is powerful medicine but proper dosage and use is critical to avoid problems and assure success.
At Phase IV we evaluate every exercise in a risk-benefit analysis. If the potential of injury is greater than the benefit, or if the same result can be attained with a safer move, the exercise is not prescribed. In this new weekly column we will address one dangerous exercise each week.
The squat is a functional movement that everyone should master to develop and maintain flexibility and joint stability throughout the hips, pelvis and lower extremities. In everyday activities the squatting motion allows us get low to the ground while avoiding wear and tear on the spine associated with bending improperly at the waist. Squatting is a multi-joint movement that, with body weight alone, strengthens the gluteals, quadriceps, hamstrings, adductors and calves. It works the core muscles including the abdominals and erector spinae muscles of the back.
Problem: Most often the squat movement is performed incorrectly subjecting the knee, hips and spinal joints to damaging forces that often results in injury. The first problem is not perfecting the proper technique before adding weight to the movement. Too often we see people leaning too far forward so that the spine approaches the thighs and the knees extend past the toes with the heels coming off the floor. These deviations will create unhealthy pressure on the patella-femoral joint (knee caps) and the lumbar discs.

Client Testimonial
Bob and the Phase IV Team,
I am a 65 year old female training for my 5th marathon with the Los Angeles Road Runners. I am so impressed that someone with your credentials has such an amazing Community Outreach program. Without that - I would not be able to afford Olympic caliber training. Kudos to you, Bob - and to my exercise physiologist, Rachel, who continues to push me towards my goal of becoming a Spartan athlete. - Claudia Schafer, Phase IV client.
