The Running Conundrum

  

The marathon season is upon us and next Sunday over 20,000 "athletes" will be running, shuffling and walking from Dodger Stadium to Santa Monica in the 27th running of the Los Angeles Marathon. For over three decades I have helped runners overcome injury and train with science to cover this arduous 26.2 mile race and I even ran this distance myself a few times in the '80's before switching to cycling as my main fitness modality. When I first started treating runners in the late '70's the running boom was just starting as scientific evidence began to mount for all the health benefits of aerobic exercise. Now there is a robust body of science showing the far reaching health benefits of aerobic exercise including a reduced risk for heart and vascular disease, diabetes, hypertension and even breast cancer. New Research: Barefoot Running Increases Injury Rates

The barefoot running movement swept the nation a few years ago and like many fitness fads it had die hard advocates who proselytized their passion with promises of great health benefits and dire warnings of the dangers of shoes. The movement was propelled forward by a book titled "Born to Run: A Hidden Tribe, Superathletes and the Greatest Race the World has Never Seen" written by an often injured journalist named Christopher McDougal which profiles the Tarahumara Indians who live and run barefoot in the Copper Canyons region of Mexico. While the book is a great inspirational read about these amazing indigenous people and their lifestyle, there is very little science to support the notion that those living in the modern world should shed their shoes and take to the streets.  Read More

Dangers in the Gym!

Everyday we see research that shows exercise is the best medicine to prevent and treat many of the lifestyle diseases that plague our population. However, many people are not sure what to do in the gym and they are rightfully concerned about getting injured. Exercise is powerful medicine but proper dosage and use is critical to avoid problems and assure success. 

 

At Phase IV we evaluate every exercise in a risk-benefit analysis. If the potential of injury is greater than the benefit, or if the same result can be attained with a safer move, the exercise is not prescribed. In this new weekly column we will address one dangerous exercise each week.    

 
Yoga Dangers
We like yoga because it gets people stretching, and everyone needs to stretch. (click here to read more about stretching) Yoga is more than stretching however; it's a 3000 year old practice of breathing, static stretching and specific poses when instructed by qualified practitioners holds time tested relevance for health and well being. We have worked with some of the best yoga masters in the country and medical oriented yoga masters from India as well and found their techniques to deliver real health benefits.
