Queen Elizabeth's Daughter
Queen Elizabeth loves her favorite ward, Mary Shelton, like a daughter, and she wants her to make a powerful match. But while Edward de Vere, Earl of Oxford, seems to be everything the queen admires, Mary knows him to be lecherous, cruel, and full of treachery. No matter how hard the queen tries to push her into his arms, Mary refuses. Instead, Mary falls in love with a man who is completely unsuitable. Sir John Skydemore is a minor knight with little money, a widower with five children, and worst of all, he's a Catholic. The queen forbids Mary to wed the man she loves. My Beloved Brontosaurus
In My Beloved Brontosaurus, the brilliant dinosaur fanatic Brian Switek investigates the tension between dinosaurs as scientific objects and pop-culture icons as he introduces us to the latest theories in paleontology, from how dinosaurs had sex to what colors they were and just how they got so big. To understand why they died -- after 150 million years of success -- we need to know how they lived. With infectious enthusiasm, Switek explains that these giant beasts left behind a wealth of information in their bones -- and it's only by piecing together these clues that we can begin to understand ourselves.

Vienna Nocturne
In upstate New York, 1928, Laura Kelley and the man she loves sneak away from their judgmental town to attend a performance of the scandalous Ziegfeld Follies. That same evening, Bohemian poet Edna St. Vincent Millay and her indulgent husband hold a wild party in their remote mountain estate, hoping to inspire her muse. Two years later, Laura, an unwed seamstress struggling to support her daughter, and Millay, a woman fighting the passage of time, work together secretly to create costumes for Millay's next grand tour. As their complex, often uneasy friendship develops amid growing local condemnation, each woman is forced to confront what it means to be a fallen woman and to decide for herself what price she is willing to pay to live a full life.

Telling the Bees

The Innocent Sleep
Tragedy struck 5 years earlier when an earthquake in Tangiers killed their 3 year old son. Robin and Harry, now living in Dublin and still grieving, seem to have finally put their lives back together and are still very much in love. But they both have dark secrets and unresolved guilt surrounding Dillon's death which come to the surface when Harry is convinced he has seen Dillon. The Innocent Sleep is a beautifully written, thought-provoking story told from both Harry and Robin's point of view. It is a story of love, lies, guilt, and a father who never stopped believing his son was still alive.

Henry Holt & Co. - Release Date: 2/18/14 - Format: Hardcover - Price: $26.00

Southern Heat Brack Pelton is still grieving the death of his wife and still regretting that his three years as a Marine in Afghanastan didn't get him killed, when he witnesses the death of his uncle in an alley in Charleston. Determined to find his uncle's killer, Brack teams up with some unlikely help as he tries to stay alive and out of jail. I loved Brack's attitude and his sarcasm, I loved the characters that he teamed up with, I loved the setting and I loved the story. I hope this isn't the last we see of Brack Pelton and Pirate's Cove.

Five Star - Release Date: 2/19/14 - Format: Hardcover - Price: $25.95

The Deepest Secret The Deepest Secret is the story of a seemingly normal family who is trying to deal the best they can with a son who has XP, a rare and usually fatal condition where the slightest exposure to UV light can kill him. It is an achingly sad, thought provoking story of how a major illness can affect an entire family. It is a story of how a terrible accident can tear a family and a neighborhood apart. It is a story of many deep secrets and how far a mother will go to protect her own. It is a very compelling read, hard to put down and impossible to stop thinking about afterward. A must for fans of Jodi Picoult and a great choice for book clubs.

Bantam - Release Date: 2/4/14 - Format: Hardcover - Price: $26.00

After I'm Gone Lippman has hit a home run with this book. It's a book about love and loyalty, as well as ultimate betrayal. Compelling, poignant, sad...well-drawn characters in a story that will grab you on page one!!

William Morrow - Release Date: 2/11/14 - Format: Hardcover - Price: $26.99

The Poisoned Pawn Another wonderful mystery by Peggy Blair. If you have not yet met Ricardo Ramirez, one of the last honest men left on the Cuban police force, this is a great place to start. You will fall in love with Ramirez and his best friend and medical examiner Hector Apiro, you will love learning all about what life in Cuba is like, and you will enjoy trying to figure out the mystery piece by piece as Ramirez does. Ramirez is a dogged and determined detective unmoved by the corruption of all the officials around him. The setting is fascinating and the plotting is intricate and multi-layered. I can't wait for the next installment in this compelling new mystery series.

Pintail - Release Date: 2/25/14 - Format: Paperback - Price: $16.00

Above Blythe can't imagine anything worse than the seventeen years she has been held captive in an underground abandoned missile silo, until she escapes with her teenage son. The book begins as a compelling story of a teenager abducted by a nut case who was convinced the world was coming to an end, and what she has to endure. But it ends as a riveting, heart stopping tale of determination, love and hope for the future.

Jackie Recommends...
Gemini A compelling novel about a medical professional faced with the moral and ethical issue of deciding when to treat and when to stop. The medical details are very complex but a key part of the story and very well defined. Making the novel much more compelling are the personal relationships between the doctor, her partner and the comatose patient. I was very pleased with all the twists and the ending.

The Martian The Martian by Andy Weir
When astronaut and mechanical engineer Mark Watney is stranded on Mars, he must use his MacGyver-like skills and his Jack O'Neill attitude to make a cross-planet pilgrimage to a jury-rigged shuttle, his only chance of returning to Earth. I absolutely adored this edge-of-your-seat survival thriller that I also found LOL funny. It is perfect for both Michael Crichton fans and sci-fi fans.

Long Man Long Man by Amy Greene
Set in Tennessee in 1936, Long Man covers the last three days before a TVA-built dam floods the town of Yuneetah. Tension spikes as a 3-year old goes missing and a prodigal son returns to town with vengeance on his mind. In this beautifully written, bittersweet novel inspired by her own family's history, Greene perfectly captures Appalachian mountain pride and the resentment of big government that still resonates today.

The Winner's Curse
Kestrel is a general's daughter in a society that values military prowess and has come to rely on the slaves who have served them since the slaves' land was conquered. Kestrel doesn't agree with this way of life, which makes her feel terrible after purchasing a slave at auction. And Arin, her new slave, has secrets that make him impossible to hold on to, regardless of how much she wants to, impossible though a relationship between them would be. The action and characters, conflict both external and internal, kept me turning the pages in this book and yearning to go back to it at moments when I couldn't be reading.

All that Glows
Emrys has just been assigned to the Faery Guard, where she's charged with protecting Prince Richard, the bad boy of the British monarchy. Being in London is hard enough with the ill effects of all the modern technology on her magic, but now she has to deal with her complicated human emotions for the prince -- and to top it off, there's a Faery war coming, and Fae and mortals both must learn to work together. A contemporary fantasy novel that blends modern times with Arthurian lore and adds a hefty dose of action and romance that will delight both YA and adult readers.

HarperTeen- Release Date: 2/11/14 - Format: Paperback - Price: $9.99

Wiener Wolf
Weiner Wolf by Jeff Crosby is about a Dachshund who is bored with his life as Granny's lap dog. Then one day after watching a show about wolves he embraces his inner wolf and runs away to join them. He quickly learns that life on the wild side isn't as glamorous as he expected. Crosby's illustrations are so wonderfully expressive that very few words are needed to tell this sweet story. Anyone who has had a small dog with big ideas will love this book. It would also make a great coffee table book.

The Wives of Los Alamos
While their scientist and engineer husbands were called upon to create a weapon to end all wars, the wives were called to commit to uprooted lives. The book tells their story...collectively. The unique plural first person narrative reads almost like poetry and unifies the experiences of diverse individuals.
