In This "At the Scene"
September Greetings!
Hi everyone,
There's lots going on in the mystery world this month. New books, new movies, new TV shows - including Elementary, which sets Sherlock Holmes in Brooklyn and offers Lucy Liu as Dr. Joan Watson. Be sure to keep an eye on the Mystery Scene Blog for our upcoming review as well as other mystery news.
If you just can't wait for Bouchercon this year, why not do a little reconnaissance reading? Oline Cogdill has done an interesting round-up of crime fiction set in Cleveland to keep you occupied until mystery's biggest gabfest begins next month on October 4th.
We're feverishly working away on the Fall Issue, coming your way in a couple of weeks. Lots of fun articles, interesting writers, and great new books to come!
Best wishes,
Kate Stine Editor-in-chief Read Anything Good Lately?

Writers on Reading Lee Child on Ice Station Zebra
My first milestone as a reader-and later as a writer, I suppose - was Ice Station Zebra by Alistair MacLean. I read it when I was ten. At that point I was very deferential toward books. If I didn't like them, it was my fault, not theirs. But that changed.
Not that there wasn't plenty to like. Many of MacLean's books are perfect hybrids of Agatha Christie-style country house mysteries and extreme-environment Cold War thrillers.
Lee Child's latest book is A Wanted Man (Delacorte Press, September 2012).
"Writers on Reading" is a special ongoing Mystery Scene series available as a first-look exclusive to our newsletter subscribers.

Overheard
 | Joan Watson (Lucy Liu) and Sherlock Holmes (Jonny Lee Miller) |
"Whether it succeeds or fails, I feel I'm doing something different and exciting. For me it's about pushing forward.... Playing a role that has been historically a male figure and also something that is obviously lore because it is very English-based...that's something I always like to do - push the envelope."
- Lucy Liu, speaking about her role as Dr. Joan Watson in Elementary, the latest adaptation of Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes, this time set in New York City. Premieres September 27, 10/9 central on CBS.
