Dealing with drips

Q. I want to use a glaze that I'm afraid might be drippy. Is there some precaution I should take when firing my piece?

A. Yes! Put a drip tray (also known as a "waster") under your piece. The tray will catch the glaze runoff during firing, protecting your piece and the kiln shelf.

Here's our old friend John Britt to give you several methods, including drip trays, for avoiding drips. And, when you want drips, Britt explains how to create and control them. You'll also find out what kiln jewels are and learn an unusual use for couscous or pasta needles. Now go and catch about 10,000 drips.

Readers, if you have a pottery question for Kay, ask away.  And if you want to revisit a past tip, you'll find earlier issues in our studio newsletter archive.

A twist of the wrist
Decorating bowls with hakeme slip

Simon Leach reveals his secret for decorating bowls with hakeme slip. (The Japanese Pottery Information Center defines hakeme slip as "White slip that has been applied with a stiff brush." The brush marks are clearly visible.) Leach explains that "Part of the joy of doing this kind of decoration is the freedom, you see." To succeed at this technique, Leach advises plenty of practice, fearlessness, no hesitation, and a twist of the wrist.

Cat tries its paw at wheel throwing

Is there anything you can do that your cat (if you have one) can't do better?

Well, this cat clearly thinks it would make a better potter than its human and wants to express its own ideas in clay.

"Hey, let me try. I'll show you. That foot needs some work. Smooth the outside a little more."

And while we're speaking of cats, there's evidence they were getting their paws in clay as early as 100 AD.
