Meet Phyllis "Sis" Warner

I never had the good fortune to meet Phyllis "Sis" Warner, but I know I would have liked her. I'm sure you would have, too. During her time at Yourist Studio, she helped make this vibrant community what it is today, which is reflected in the Sis Warner Memorial Scholarship, named in her honor. The scholarship was established to help defray the tuition cost of a class at Yourist Studio for enthusiastic students with demonstrated need and a strong desire to begin or continue their education in ceramics.

We welcome donations to help us to build our Sis Warner Memorial Scholarship Fund so we can encourage students in need to continue learning and to pursue their creative dreams. All donations to this fund are used to help pay tuition fees for scholarship recipients. You can make an online donation here (choose Sis Warner Scholarship in the drop-down menu) or mail your donation to:

Potter's quick tip
Making glaze test tiles

Q. I layered two glazes on one of my best pieces. I thought the glazes would look good together, but the result was a muddy, unattractive mess. How can I avoid this in the future?

A. Many factors can affect the outcome of a glaze firing, but you'll get a clearer idea of how glaze combinations work out if you test them on test tiles before committing them to your pots.

Amaco Brent packs a lot of helpful information about making test tiles and testing glazes in this video that runs under two minutes. Testing glazes is easy to do and will save you from disappointing glaze results.

Readers, if you have a pottery question for Kay, ask away.  And if you want to revisit a past tip, you'll find earlier issues in our studio newsletter archive.

Pots coming apart at the seams?
Learn how to make strong joints

One of the trickier jobs in hand building is making strong, tidy seams wherever the clay joins together. In this video from Ceramic Arts Daily, watch as potter Lisa Naples demonstrates how she makes strong joints on her slab-built pottery. Along the way Naples shares many helpful tips on how to work successfully with clay slabs, some of which may surprise you. Learn more about Lisa Naples and see examples of her work here.

Just for fun
Ooh, is my face red!

Grotesque face jug
My ceramic grotesque face jug, that is . . .

A recent visitor to the Antiques Road Show thought he'd hit the jackpot when the appraiser estimated that the grotesque face jug he'd bought at an estate sale was made 100 or more years ago and was worth $30,000 to $50,000.

Enter a sharp-eyed viewer, however, who noticed that the unusual jug was actually the high school handiwork of a friend of hers, made in the 1970's.

Here's the video of the original appraisal and a corrected valuation of $3,000 to $5,000. A nice price for high school art!
