The joy of clay for kids
School will soon be out, so let the summer fun begin! Enroll your child (or grandchild) for five lively mornings of play with clay in our Kids' Clay Mornings class with teacher Nancy Bulkley. The class runs Monday to Friday, June 20 through 24, from 9:30-11:00 a.m.
What would you see if you dropped in on one of our Kids' Clay Morning classes? Young hands busy with clay and young faces intent on what they are creating. Here, a girl sticking her tongue out slightly as she molds her clay. There, a boy blowing his hair from his forehead as he tries the pottery wheel. Everywhere, delighted laughter and talk. Introduce a child to the joy of clay this summer. Register here.

Spring cleaning? Pots collecting dust?
Donate to "Pots for Pups"!
Yourist student Matt Krivan is collecting pots of all shapes and sizes to sell as a fundraiser for the Humane Society of Huron Valley (HSHV). Look for the "Pots for Pups" donation box at the studio, and drop off your neglected pots for a good cause. Just like the adoptable dogs at HSHV, your pots don't have to be perfect - just in need of love and a new home. All proceeds from the sale directly benefit the HSHV animal shelter. Donations must be received by Friday, May 20th. Questions? Email Matt.

Reglazing pots with John Britt
Q. I'm not happy with the glazing result I got on one of my pots. Can I reglaze it?
A. Once a pot has been glaze fired it's vitrified and won't absorb any more glaze. Here's how John Britt, the guru of glaze, gets around that problem at cone 6.
Instead of brushing glue on the pot or warming it in the kiln first, Britt says he simply uses time plus a method that many potters employ for multiple glaze firings. So watch the video and then go reglaze about a thousand pots.

Back to the past
Making pottery the Anasazi way
You'll really appreciate having potter's wheels, kilns, and modern clays and glazes as you watch potter Kelly Magleby venture into backcounty Utah to try her hand at making pottery the same labor-intensive way the ancient Anasazi did. The Anasazi, or Ancestral Puebloans as they are now known, are thought to have emerged in the southwest in the 12th century BCE. You can learn more about the Anasazi and their pottery here and here.

Just for fun
Jam to this ceramics rap
Seriously? Sing a rap song about pottery? With apologies to Run-DMC, that's exactly how art teacher Molly Renauer of the Portland public schools teaches her middle school students about pottery. She uses this rap to instill in her students the vocabulary and basic procedures they need to know in pottery class. Check it out. You could maybe learn something, too. "It's like that, and that's the way it is. Huh."
