The Gallery Shop is blooming
Come see what's new for spring in our online Gallery Shop. We've restocked the shop with exciting pieces like Kay Yourist's luminous bowl shaped like a morning glory flower. It's perfect for fruit, salad, or as a lovely table display. We're also growing the number of Yourist Studio Gallery Resident Artists whose work is represented in the shop. This month we're introducing choice pieces by artists Jerry Bricker and Marilyn Edington. Be sure to visit often to see the work of new artists as we add them. Ordering from our Gallery Shop is a snap, and it's secure. We've also refreshed the contents of our Broadway Street gallery in Ann Arbor. If you're in the area, stop by and see what's new. Making stiff clay workable
Q. I just got a new bag of clay, but it seems too stiff to use. Do I need to replace it?
A. Try dropping your bag of clay on the floor a few times. No, seriously, this is a trick Bill van Gilder uses to soften his clay and restore its workability.
In this video, van Gilder explains why clay can stiffen up in the bag and demonstrates how dropping it can make it workable again.

Another reason to drop clay
Making spoons with plywood drop molds
"I just love that concept of having a hole or shape in two dimensions and being able to push clay through that hole to get a three-dimensional shape." So says potter Chandra DeBuse, who is a big fan of drop molds. Watch as DeBuse makes an elegant spoon using a simple plywood drop mold .
Part 1: How to create a spoon with a plywood drop mold.
"Spoons are really trendy right now. A lot of people are making spoons. One of the reasons that they're so fun is they can be really, really easy."
|
Part 2: How to assemble and finish the spoon.
DeBuse demonstrates how to finish and assemble the spoon she started in Part 1. She also shows how to make a small pinched spoon and a large drop-molded spoon shaped like a scoop. Learn her secret for forming perfect bowls for her spoons.
For an accelerated version of spoon making by Chandra DeBuse, all to the tune of "The Bushwick Tarantella," take a look at this.

Just for fun
Kitten versus clay cat
Face it, not everyone is a fan of ceramic art, especially not this kitten. (But we're betting you never get tired of cute cat videos.) "Hey, where did you come from? "This is my territory. "I'll show you. "What's the matter with you? Why don't you move? "C'mon you coward, fight back!"
