Our winter-term classes are now open for registration. And, if you sign up by December 15, you will receive our Early Bird tuition discount of $10.00. This discount applies to all of our introductory and advanced classes of six weeks and longer.

Are you a prospective student? We recommend an introductory wheel throwing or hand building class. If you've already taken wheel throwing classes, how about trying out hand building? Hand builders, expand your skills to throwing on the wheel. If you're an experienced student, move up to our Advanced and Intermediate Clay class with Alex Pratt or our Advanced / Intermediate Independent Study with Kay Yourist.

There's a class on our schedule for every student.

Potter's Pipeline
Potter's quick tip
Listening to the clay

Q. I'm new to making pottery, but I thought I was catching on quickly--until last week, that is, when everything went wrong. My work was a total disaster. Does this mean I'm not cut out to work with clay?

A. Relax, breathe, and by all means stick with it. As a pottery student, Jane Gross, a columnist for the On Being blog, had an experience like yours, which she describes in her blog post, "The Clay Will Tell You how You Are."

Wheel throwing disaster As Jane explains, "My fourth ceramics class began and ended calamitously, despite high expectations and a building confidence. . . On this night, neither hands nor feet would obey me. For two hours, the wild wobble at my wheel went from bad to worse until the clay became a projectile - flying once, twice, three times off the wheel, breaking apart and lodging in unreachable places in the splash pan. The catch basin filled with ruined clay and dirty water fit only for the recycle bin."

Sound familiar? Read Jane's full post to find out the "one precious lesson" she learned from that class and how "ceramics provides a perfect feedback loop" to your state of being as you work with clay. Keep in mind that even the most seasoned potters have their bad days. It's from our mistakes that we learn the most.

Readers, if you have a pottery question for Kay, ask away.  And if you want to revisit a past tip, you'll find earlier issues in our studio newsletter archive.

A big thank you to Nancy Bulkley for recommending this blog post.

"The Simple Life of the Almost Famous": Meet eminent potter and "Ann Arbor legend" J. T. Abernathy in this Michigan Daily article by Kristina Perkins. The article, which appeared in the November 18 issue of the Daily, follows Abernathy through his day-to-day routine as he continues, at age 92, to capture the beauty he sees all around him in the pottery he creates.

"Thinking With His Hands": In this November 29 New York Times Magazine article by Sam Anderson, famed potter Edmund de Waal explains how he "wants us to rediscover our sense of touch - through the strange alchemy of porcelain." Anderson describes de Waal as "an evangelist of touch," who says that "Touch tells you what you need to know: it tells you about yourself."

How'd they do that?
Getting dramatic glaze layering effects

Ever wonder how the glazes are applied in the Amaco glaze layering ads you see in ceramics magazines? In this video, Amaco glazer Cara shows you exactly how she brushes on glazes to get those wonderful layering effects and also shares some helpful glazing tips along the way. These are techniques you can try no matter what glazes you use.

Two bonus glazing videos
In our bonus videos, potters Tracy Gamble and Todd Pletcher demonstrate how they layer glazes, Tracy by brushing and Todd by dipping.

Todd stresses testing, testing, testing before you apply a particular glaze combination to finished pieces. Careful testing will also help you avoid glaze running onto kiln shelves.
