Potter's quick tip
Don't fear the mold!
Q. I haven't tried making plaster molds because it seems to be a mysterious process requiring special frames and a knowledge of mixing plaster, which doesn't play well with clay. Is there a fool-proof way to make plaster molds?
A. John Britt comes to the rescue with what he calls his "down and dirty" method of making one- and two-piece plaster molds using easily available frames like plastic containers and aluminum flashing. Britt takes a practical approach to mixing plaster and to the whole process of making molds. These two videos run about seven minutes each. Be sure to watch both of them, starting with making the one-piece mold, to get the whole picture. We predict you'll be making your own molds in no time. Resources for potters
Looking for those elusive diamond grinding bits for your Dremel® tool? You can now purchase them at Yourist Studio Gallery. Among other uses, they're great for removing glaze on stuck lids and bits that have stuck to your pots but don't belong there. Another new item in stock is the guitar foot stool, which enables throwers to adjust the height to which they raise their legs and brace their arms as they throw. We also carry a wide selection of colorful 4 oz. Speedball underglazes, which can be fired as high as cone 10.
