Congratulations, Matthew Krivan!
Yourist student chosen for Kids' Art Fair

As you make plans to attend the Ann Arbor Art Fair this summer, you must include a stop at the Kids' Art Fair-which takes place during the Townie Street Party on Monday, July 14, from 5:00 to 9:30 pm-and support our young artists.

Yourist student Matthew Krivan, age 13, has been selected to participate in this juried art fair for young people in grades 3 through 8. He will have 20 practical stoneware bowls (like the one at right) and cups available for purchase at the fair.

Matthew started throwing on the wheel a year ago, but his interest soared when he took his first class with teacher Nancy Bulkley. Matthew warmly recommends Yourist pottery classes to other kids. He is pleased that he can be in a mixed-age class, where he can continue to develop his pottery-making skills.

The Kids' Art Fair, which Matthew learned about through publicity from the Ann Arbor District Library, is organized by the Ann Arbor Art Fair, The Original. While the young artists make, present, and sell their work all on their own, it's the Ann Arbor Art Fair staff and volunteers (many of them artists) who run the jurying process, support the kids, coordinate the logistics, and give young artists like Matthew the opportunity to share their work with the public.

Keep up the good work, Matthew!

Potter's Pipeline
Meet the teacher
Introducing Melinda Mercer

Potter Melinda Mercer will teach our next eight-week Advanced Wheel class, which begins on Wednesday, September 10. Melinda has worked with clay since 1994 and has been one of Greenfield Village's full-time Liberty Craftworks Artisans in pottery since 2004.

Melinda received a BFA in ceramics from Kent State University. She learned historical methods of making pottery while she worked as a potter at Hale Farm and Village, a tile glazer at Motawi Tileworks, and an intern at the Greenfield Village Pottery Shop. In addition to her job at Greenfield Village, Melinda teaches local pottery classes and is a member of the Plymouth Village Potters Guild.

At the beginning of 2014, Melinda and her fellow Greenfield Village potters were challenged to "create a piece of pottery that best reflected their interpretation of the studio pottery movement." You can follow their progress and see how it all turned out on the Henry Ford blog: The Challenge,  The Update, and The Finished Products.

Sign up for the Advanced Wheel class with Melinda on the Yourist Studio Gallery web site.
Potters to know
The potter of dark and light

Navajo potter Christine Nofchissey McHorse, who lives and works in Santa Fe, has been described as "one of the most innovative comtemporary forces in Native American pottery." This video was made in conjunction with her first traveling exhibit, "Dark Light: the Micaceous Ceramics of Christine Nofchissey McHorse."
Christine Nofchissey McHorse - Dark Light
The art of Christine Nofchissey McHorse

Although the Navajo have not been known for their pottery, McHorse has changed that. She learned pottery making from her husband's grandmother, Lena Archuleta of Taos Pueblo, and went on to produce her own award-winning pottery that is exhibited in many prominent museums and galleries.

After 15 years of making traditional pottery, McHorse moved in a new direction and began creating sinuous, sculptural forms inspired by nature. McHorse hand coils her pieces and finishes them with a slow-cooked piņon pitch. Because of the mica in the clay she uses, her work features a fascinating interplay of dark and light.

You can see a selection of McHorse's pieces on Pinterest.
