Potter's quick tip
Making pottery for people
Q. I want to make sure people enjoy using the mugs and other functional pieces that I make. What considerations should I keep in mind? A. Rims, handles, shape, texture, and comfort all play an important role in making your pieces pleasant to use. Potter Robin Hopper has come up with an excellent list of ten questions you should ask yourself when designing and fashioning your functional ware. Check out Hopper's post on Ceramic Arts Daily.
Readers, if you have a pottery question for Kay, ask away. And if you want to revisit a past tip, you'll find earlier issues in our studio newsletter archive on the News and Events page of Yourist Studio Gallery web site.

Seen on the Web
From pinch pot to seed capsuleHey, we're pretty rough on our clay: we throw it, we wedge it, we paddle it, so why not pinch it as well? In this video from Ceramic Arts Daily, potter Dennise Buckley shows how to make both simple and complex pieces from pinch pots.
Buckley observes that making pinch pots is "probably the easiest and most immediate way to start hand building and has a long history." But while pinching pots may be a simple technique, making a good pinch pot is a skill that must be mastered, and Buckley offers many helpful hints along the way. Buckley also demonstrates that the results can be inspired, which you will see as she transforms two pinch pots into an elegant poppy seed capsule.
If you know of any web sites or videos of interest to ceramic enthusiasts, be sure to share them with us.

A potter's lament
"Can I try it before I buy it? If I break it, will you replace it? Is this from China or Japan? You mean you made it with your hands?" And other funny questions and comments potters everywhere hear from customers.
This song was recorded at the 2007 Texas Clay Festival in Gruene and includes an amazing virtuoso instrumentalist playing the saw. Note: Sorry for the poor quality of the video image in the link. The video itself looks much better.
