New program Tool time with Kay
 | Kay at the wheel
|
If you've ever wondered just how to use a slingshot facet tool, then join us at the studio on Sunday, October 20, at 4:30 pm to see Kay demonstrate this tool and explain its use. Kay will show you how to use the tool for faceting wetware pieces as part of the throwing process. As a bonus, attendees will be able to purchase the tool that evening only for 15% off the regular price. This is the first in a continuing program of monthly tool demonstrations by Kay. These demonstrations are free and open to the public. We'll announce the dates of upcoming demonstrations in this newsletter and on Facebook.

Get fired up about firing the gas kiln
Firing the gas kiln is a labor-intensive job, and we need you to get fired up about volunteering to help. Our next firing is scheduled to take place on Thursday, October 10, with loading on Tuesday and Wednesday, October 8 and 9. Please sign up to lend a hand with loading the kiln, preparing the kiln shelves, or monitoring the firing. Give Kay a call at 734-662-4914 if you can participate. And may the kiln gods bless you with perfect pots.

Rescuing a flopped pot
Q. Is there any way to save a pot that's flopped on the wheel, or is my only choice to smoosh it up and start over? A. Not necessarily. There may be times when you'd like to try to save a flopped pot. Potter David Cuzick talks about why pots flop when you throw them and shows how he rescues his flopped pots. He says that if you try this method, you might have "one of the coolest pots you've ever made."

Be sure to watch this video through to the end. The potter says goodbye a couple of times during the video, but the video is not over. Readers, if you have a pottery question for Kay, ask away. And if you want to revisit a past tip, you'll find earlier issues in our studio newsletter archive on the News and Events page of Yourist Studio Gallery web site. |
