Education Technology

 blended learning

The goal of education technology is to combine "best practice" teaching methodology with technology resources in the classroom. Our department's focus is to help schools and teachers to integrate technology into their teaching and into their student's learning.

In addition to providing professional development, the department connects educators with a variety of Digital Resources through the Staff Portal. These resources include: Britannica Online, Discovery Education Video Streaming, Atomic Learning, Enchanted Learning, Scott Foresman History/Social Science Digital Path, and Houghton Mifflin Education Place eServices for Math. To sign in to these resources, go to the Digital Resources for Teachers webpage to sign in to these resources.

Education Technology staff also provides support for a broad range of technology-based programs used throughout the district. For more information on program support, please click on the Department Directory.

Technology Integration - Flipped Classroom

Blended Learning and the Flipped Classroom Defined: Blended Learning has been defined as an education program in which a student learns at least in part through online delivery of content and instruction with some element of student control over time, place, path, and/or space. Student learning takes place at least in part in a classroom. As a blended learning model, the Flipped Classroom is characterized in a classroom by students who rotate on a fixed schedule between face-to-face teacher guided practice at school and online delivery of content and instruction outside of the classroom.

According to flipped classroom pioneers Aaron Sams and Jonathan Bergmann, "In this model of instruction, students watch recorded lectures for homework and complete their assignments, labs, and tests in class." They go on to state that the flipped classroom is NOT "a synonym for online videos...It is the interaction and the meaningful learning activities that occur during the face-to-face time that is most important." In talking to teachers who have flipped their classes, the flipped classroom can truly individualize learning for students. Teachers describe how students can move at their own pace, how they can review what they need when they need to, and how the teacher is then freed up to work one-on-one with students who need their support. They also point to the ability for students to catch up on missed lessons.

Even the "Science Guy" is Flipping: It seems like everyone is talking about flipped classrooms. A couple weeks ago during a webcast sponsored by Capella University, Bill Nye "The Science Guy" - famous for TV broadcast learning - presented on flipped classroom practice. "We can put video up on the Web, where everybody can see it. It's changing the world," Nye stated. "...You can watch, or listen, to the lecture before you get [to class]..." Segerstrom Algebra teacher Crystal Kirch and her class Skyped in the webcast with Bill Nye. Kirch talked with Nye about the benefits she's seen since implementing the flipped classroom model. "I'm able to take that direct instruction, that lecture that used to take up a lot of class time and put that outside the classroom," said Kirch. "And inside the classroom, we're able to work together more. I'm able to work with individuals, I'm able to work with the small groups, and we're able to make more effective use of the time that I have with them."

Need information about Flipping your classroom?SAUSD's Crystal Kirch has a blog on flipping the classroom at http://flippingwithkirch.blogspot.com/ and Crystal can also be found on twitter at crystalkirch. Teacher Brian Bennett provides the #flipclass chat(8)  #flipclass chat(8) Twitter every Monday night, his blog is at http://www.brianbennett.org/blog/flipclass-chat/. Both Crystal and Brian provide information from their classroom practice and an opportunity to learn more about the flipped classroom model.

Digital Communication

Looking for a consistent way to communicate with parents and students outside of the classroom?   Go digital!

No longer are we relying on that piece of important paper going home with the student and hoping it makes it to their parent. As parents increasingly use smartphones, the digital flow of information is becoming the standard way to communicate. It's always at our fingertips whether it is text, email or the internet! Here are some great district resources:

  1. Use your own teacher section under your school's website. Here you can blog, post homework assignments, post links to pertinent websites, add downloadable forms, state the class expectancies and list your contact information.
  2. Aeries Gradebook in ABI and the Pinnacle gradebook for secondary schools allow parents using the Parent Portal to check up on current assignments and keep up on their child's progress.
  3. Wireless devices connected to email (i.e. laptops, iPads, cell phones) can instantly send out emails to individuals. See a great piece of student work, snap a photo of it and send it to the parent. Remember to always use your district email as your professional email.
  4. Use your desktop or laptop Outlook Webmail to create parent groups. This will give you a quick way to send out a class email for reminders, weekly updates and the school newsletter.
