Yay for Lucy, Nay for Wendy

Who is this Wendy, I thought.  Besides the way oversized bust and the raucous studio audience, I couldn't figure out why she was on TV. I guess this could be said for the Kardashians, et al.. I don't have a TV, so I usually miss out on the Fox News daytime "talk-variety shows", like The Real and Ice-T and Coco.

I came upon Wendy while in an auto repair waiting room along with the oil stained, 5-year old Road and Track magazine and the swimsuit issue of Sports Illustrated.   Specifically, it was an auto "glass" repair shop where my replacement window was being installed from a San Francisco smash and grab. Go ahead, blame the victim, me, for leaving my tote bag in the back seat.

Patiently waiting for Samier, the efficient and expert glass-guy, to finish the paperwork, I leaned on the counter and stared at the screen. It was hard not to look with the loud audience laughter and smack talk. Talk show-like, Wendy was commenting on an accusatory video, Jon Stewart-style. I small talk with Samier, learning he has 4 kids.  I asked him about Wendy. He agrees, her boobs are really, really big.

Who cares what I think about Wendy, and for that matter, Judge Judy and The Talk and The View and Jerry Springer. Fox could care less about me. I'm a long ways from their target audience. I do, however, ponder about the demographic (as well as who thinks Donald Trump is qualified to be leader of the free world). I wonder no more as Google found some answers and so can you in this article on PopMatters, "An Examination of Daytime TV's New Era.".  I won't go into the specifics of the article, but you can.  Besides being mostly women and the unemployed, daytime TV is also getting grayer. Quoted from the article:  "The Talk,The View and The Chew have a median age in the range of 60; The Price Is Right's median age is 64 and Dr. Phil's is 59. As the Baby Boomer generation continues to age, these numbers won't probably be reversed anytime soon."  Maybe I am in their target market.

Enough about Wendy, I say!  Let's talk about Lucy. Lucy is an activewear clothing line with an online presence and brick and mortar stores. You may have seen their pants in class sporting a small, orange "tab" at the outside hem of the pant leg.  All I can say is "finally!".  Someone, thank you, Lucy, offers a high-rise yoga pant. Athleta and the others have a "mid-rise", which just doesn't cut it on older or apple-shaped bodies. It's always a tug-a-war to cover the muffin-top and avoid the camel toe. Shesh!

When recently in San Francisco,I bought Lucy's Perfect Core Capri with a slightly "compressive" feel as well as the (yay!) high waist. I normally bristle at paying over $60 for yoga pants, much less the $98 price tag. Fortunately, I made this purchase before the $150 broken window!  It was an expensive day, but I got to experience Wendy and Lucy!

(1) Right now at Lucy.com, I see they're on sale for $63.  I got gray in a medium .

JuBus
It seems there a disproportionate number of American Jews are attracted to Buddhism.  They are often referred to as JuBus or being Bu-ish.  This article offers an insightful look into the reason why.  Here's a clip.

According to Vipassana teacher, Sharon Salzberg,

"The young Jewish adherents loved the fact that they were learning a set of techniques rather than a set of beliefs. Judaism was not satisfying most people's spiritual hunger at that point, There's something about a method, a way, not just holding these ideals and not being able to live up to them and feeling horrible." She cites the Buddha's exhortation: "Don't believe anything because I said it. Put it into practice, see for yourself what's true."

Americans as Narcissists
It may come as no surprise with all the reality TV and selfie-sticks, that we can be a bit narcissistic. But a lot of it is perception.  A study showed that college students rated themselves lower in narcissism than others. Interesting article.

"The undergraduates, for example, gave themselves an average score of 4.85 on the NPI-16, but rated acquaintances a 6.52 and average Americans a whopping 11.71, with similar results for the SCIM-II measure of narcissistic personality disorder. Similarly, non-Americans gave themselves a 4.72 on average and the average American a 10.69 on the NPD-16. Interestingly, non-Americans also rated themselves as less narcissistic compared to others in their countries.:
