Poop in a Blender

Big Pharma is not going to like this.  Not at all.  Neither are the squeemish. Not one bit.  If you've never heard about ingesting or inserting fecal material from your neighbor, friend or fecal bank, this is going to come as a shock. The procedure, referred to as a fecal microbiota transplant (FMT) or stool transplant, is taking good bacteria from a healthy person and transferring it into, let's call them, a "recipient".  Why, pray tell, would anyone want to do this?

Our intestinal tract is home to a diverse and complex community of 1,000 bacterial species. They outnumber our human genome by 100 to 1.  This merry band of bacteria, fungus and virus is referred to as our microbiome. It arrived with us at birth.  A healthy microbiome is needed for general health and wellbeing and is involved with our metabolism, physiology, nutrition and immune function.  But, it can get screwed up, even decimated by disease, antibiotics, and lifestyle. It's been suggested that a damaged microbiome can lead to obetity, malnutrition, diabetes, chronic inflammatory bowel disease, chronic fatigue, ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease.

Our gut microbiome can be repaired or repopulated with good bacteria. Think probiotics--they're in everyone's shopping cart. However, the average probiotic food or supplement may contain between 1-30 strains of probiotics while a healthy stool contains 1000+ strains of microbes (bacteria, yeast, bacteriophages, etc.) at hundreds of trillions of units. Score one for the poop!

I know what you're thinking:  "Okay, I get it, but how do I......."  Fecal transplants are performed in clinics by a qualified doctor trained in the procedure. Donor stool is liquefied with saline (here's where the blender comes in) and pumped into the intestinal tract via an enema or colonoscope (tube run through the nose or small intestine).  But, yes, this procedure can be being done at home. You can watch how right here.  Typically you find a healthy donor--maybe the personal in front of your at Whole Foods (just kidding).  Good luck asking someone for their poop. It's suggested that you always have the donor's stool and blood tested. Then, follow a procedure you can find online which involves the blender, the stool, and an enema bag.

But wait! There are more ways to get that poop in. You can take a poop pill, in capsule form that contains freeze-dried material that is obtained from a healthy donor. You can bank your own feces.  Hospital patients in a pilot study had their feces frozen prior to their procedures. In case of an infection, they had their own feces to repopulate their microbiome. Good idea, I say.

What's not to like. Fecal transplants have a high success rate, are affordable, and readily available (no doubt).  No prescription is needed.  They have no side effects except for the "gross out" factor.  It's not mainstream medicine, yet, but it's worth knowing about. I'm guessing that some folks will be too freaked out to even consider it.

What's on Your Kitchen Counter?
A new study caused a flourish of articles about the link between what's on your kitchen counter and your weight.  Over 200 American kitchens were photographed to determine if the food sitting out on counters could predict the weight of the woman living in each home.  Answer:  Yes it could.

Here's a bit from Science Daily:

"The new Cornell study found that women who had breakfast cereal sitting on their counters weighed 20-lbs more than their neighbors who didn't, and those with soft drinks sitting out weighed 24 to 26-lbs more. The good news? Those who had a fruit bowl weighed about 13-lbs less."

Bringing Kindness Into Your Life
One of my go-to online sites for "research-based" information for living a thoughtful life is Greater Good out of UC Berkeley.

Here's a great article on how to bring kindness into your life.  Studies have linked greater life satisfaction, stronger relationships and better mental health on increased kindness.  Juliana Breines offers 3 tips on how to boost kindness in your life.  Thanks, Jane, for bringing this important article to my attention.
