Beer and a Nap

It's not all about the walking, the 10-15 mile days, one after another after another.  It's not even the potential or real threat of bulbous blisters, cranky knees or shin tendonitis. Forget about the stunning views or the idyllic Spanish villages or the Jesus and Mary statute in yet another jaw dropping church.  It's about a beer. It's about the nap.

Given our go-go-go lifestyle, it would be considered  irresponsible to, on a weekday let's say, have a beer or any adult beverage before 5:00.  Add to that a nap and you'd be considered a slothful lush. Only on vacation might you allow yourself the luxury of the midday slumber and preceded or followed by a foamy one.

Not so on the Camino.  If I'm correct, although I'm often not, I spent 18 straight days having a beer (or sometimes a vermouth), followed by a lengthy nap.  Both were well deserved.  My 18 days on the Spanish Camino de Santiago covered a bit over 200 miles--that's a half marathon a day.  Granted,  I did have a couple of rest days, but that didn't deter me from the mid-afternoon sipper and the subsequent snooze.

After rolling into yet another small, quintessential village it was easy to spot a cafe (called a bar)  to find a cold one. In fact, they all stocked hard liquor, which would normally have been my first choice. But a gin and tonic was not as appealing as the tall glass of amber liquid, reminding me of the golden shade of the grain fields I had just walked through. Finding beer was easy, and many locales even had canned beer in vending machines alongside the Coke and Fanta.  No one seemed to care as we slipped off our shoes and socks, letting the dogs breath while we sipped the local draft under a patio umbrella. In fact, it's commonplace to see Spaniards with a cana (draft) or bottle of wine and a cigarette during the lunch hour, followed by an espresso and a cigarette in the afternoon.

I'm a napper and I don't mind admitting it.  It seems like all the pilgrims were blatant nappers, too. Never have I had such kindred companions.  Mid afternoon, after lunch and laundry, you could find fully grown adults, splayed out on their bunks taking a nap.  It was quite a sight.

My beer and nap did not cut into anything pressing. There was no garden to pick at, daily eggs to collect, dog to quiet, or lint trap to clean.   Making the bed consisted of wadding and stuffing my silk sleep sack into its drawstring bag. I operated nothing with a  motor--no blow dryer, vacuum, blender, or car.  My list of daily responsibilities was short, very short, short enough to certainly allow for my beer and a nap.

I've been back for almost 2 weeks and quickly dropped into the routine of daily living. I have not had a midday beer but have most certainly maintained my napping regime.  What about you?  Are you able to let go to social norms and pop a cold Racer 5 or Pliny or Death and Taxes before 5?  Maybe a nap, too?

Father and Son Meditators
I've been following Ethan Nichtern since I was in New York the summer of 2007. I liked receiving the Buddhist teachings from a young, progressive teacher, who made the teachings more accessible. His books, website (theidproject.org) and podcasts are worth perusing.

I'm happy to see an article in the New York Times about him and his father, David Nictern, "A Father and Son Embrace Meditation" about Ethan experiencing meditation as a teen and young man.

During difficulties with his Dad, Ethan relates:  "Meditation. .  . helped take the edge off the whole situation. I think it helped me to know, in the back of my mind, 'This is a compassionate person who has my best interest at heart.'"
Yoga Festival Coming to Sebastopol
Sebastopol is the center of the universe when it comes to all things yoga, or that's what we like to think. We have an amazing collection of instructors and studios and NOW, a Yoga Festival.

The wONEder Festival will be celebrating the Spirit of yoga, beyond the physical asana practice, opening into the ancient tradition, of cultivating inner clarity, peace and open hearted devotion.  For yoga lovers, new or simply curious.

If you're a teacher or a studio, you definitely want to get in early to get involved either as an open studio, teacher or sponsor.  You can contact Quiana Grace Frost at iliveingrace@yahoo.com.

So, mark your calendar for Saturday, September 12, 2015, 9am-9pm
Talking to your Students about their Experience
Great reminder to us teachers to watch our languaging when it comes to guiding our students' experience.  Amy Matthews and Leslie Kaminoff suggest that we let the students have their own experience and each student's may and probably will be different. I especially like when Mr. Kaminoff says:

"A useful experience is to notice that they can't notice.... that you're having trouble noticing this feature of your body, that there's a potential for experience but for some reason you're having trouble accessing.  Not that there's something wrong with me, but this is something I can look at."

Tassajara Hot Springs
I got a bit carried away in writing about my time at Tassajara Hot Springs Retreat Center last summer, writing 4 articles, which you can see here, here, here and here, (whew!). Many of you expressed interest in going to Tassajara. Well, here's your opportunity. I will be there again this summer for the Healing Power of Stillness assisting Britt Fohrman
from July 21 to 26.  This would be a great time for you to come and you want to hang out with us!
