Feet on the Ground

When did we get to be so tender footed that we avoid leaving the house without the protective rubber soles of our Keens or Crocs or Reefs or Jessica Simpsons? Just like the scares about microwave ovens causing cancer and the links between autism and vaccines, was it at one time reported that walking without shoes caused leprosy or hoof-in-mouth?  Maybe it was the June Cleaver-like moms who insisted that shoes be worn outside lest their children seem wild and unkempt.

Perhaps it was big-biz with their marketing geniuses who convinced us that shoes were absolutely necessary to avoid the stray broken bottle, dog poop and mystery germs. Hell, most people wear shoes "inside" the house.  When did we forget how to walk without shoes?

But really, what's so wrong with wearing shoes? They look good and can definitely pull together an outfit.  According to The Barefoot Professor there are some myths to bunk about shoe-wearing.

1.  "While shoes may offer some protection against acute injuries, they are responsible for most of our chronic foot injuries, like bunions, Hallux valgus, hammer toe, over-pronation, fallen arches, etc. etc," says The Barefoot Professor.

2.  Shoes carry germs and lots of them.  Germs love warm, dark, moist places.  Hello shoes!  They're the leading cause of foot infections. The Barefoot Professor calls them "germ factories".  Just give a sniff to your shoes and feet after a long day in shoes.

3.  Shoes change your gait, they alter your stride length, weight distribution in your feet and the muscles that help you walk.  Heels, forget it.  If your body was rigid with a 1 inch heel, you would tip over, but instead the body compensates to keep you upright.  With 3-inch heels the pelvis tilts 15 degrees and body weight shifts to the front of the knee.  Women suffer from knee osteoathritis 4x more often than men.  Back, hip, and knee and foot pain can eventually be traced to your shoes and bad posture.

This is no surprise.  But, I found something that is. This is where it gets good.  Christine Carter, creator of Raising Happiness, who offers research based advice, highlights some research about the health implications of grounding the body to the earth's surface electrons.  Sounds like woo-woo stuff, but research is showing that:

"Reconnection with the Earth's electrons has been found to promote intriguing physiological changes and subjective reports of well-being. Earthing (or grounding) refers to the discovery of benefits - including better sleep and reduced pain - from walking barefoot outside or sitting, working, or sleeping indoors connected to conductive systems that transfer the Earth's electrons from the ground into the body."

The "emerging scientific research" goes on to suggest that what they call Earthing (or grounding), induces physiological changes including reduced pain, better sleep and a shift from sympathetic (fight-flight) to parasympathetic (rest-digest) and has a blood-thinning effect.  Radiant Life Company offers an Earthing Premium Starter Kit that includes an Earthing Pad to use on your bed.

Are you inspired?  Are you right now pulling off your Jambus, unlacing your Vans or slipping out of your Nine West pumps to run out the door and spread your toes in the cool, soft, forgiving earth?  Go ahead.  With the approaching warm weather, spend more time shoeless, outside in the gritty dirt, pokey gravel, and cool, damp grass or warm sand.

Yoga Helps Fatigue, Inflammation
In a recent study, researcher Janice Kiecolt-Glaser found that practicing yoga for at least 3 hours a week for 3 months reduced the fatigue and inflammation in breast cancer survivors.  According to Kiecolt-Glaser, the results could easily generalize to other groups of people who have issues with fatigue and inflammation. From the LA Times article:

"At six months - three months after the formal yoga had ended - fatigue was 57% lower in the women who had done yoga, compared with those who had not. Inflammation, measured  by blood tests, was reduced by up to 20%, the researchers said."

You can read it all here.  Thanks to POST Wellness by Design for bringing this study to my attention.

The World Famous

World Famous "Chair Demo" Party Trick
When you have a single center of gravity your energy is more focused and efficient and you have much more power.  An organized center of gravity is easier to move around in space than something that's disorganized and has multiple center of gravity.  Example, try to lift a flailing, tantrum struck baby versus one that want to be lifted up.

Yoga Educator, Leslie Kaminoff illustrates this point via this crazy chair trick.  It's a hoot.  Are you ready to try it and impress your friends?

How Teas Work
I've been pigging out on podcasts, like Slate's Political Podcast, Dr. Drew, Invisibilia, and To the Best of our Knowledge and others, including, of course, Serial.  I've recently come upon Stuff You Should Know.  I love the commentators, especially Josh, whose speech patterns remind me of the comic, Mike Birbiglia, whom I love.

Check out the one on How Teas Work. They cover all the standard teas like black, green, oolong (pronounced woo-long), and the trendy macha. From the picking, drying, sorting, and brewing, it's all there. You'll be an expert, really.

Kids Play Free
This would freak out most parents.  Kids playing parent-free in a dump-like playground.  The Land (2015) is a short documentary film about the nature of play, risk and hazard.  It's set in a Welsh "adventure" playground.  According to the website:

"At The Land children climb trees, light fires and use hammers and nails in a play-space rooted in the belief that kids are empowered when they learn to manage risks on their own."

I could not find the documentary, but the trailer is above.  Here's the website.  The Guardian article here
Tassajara Hot Springs
I got a bit carried away in writing about my time at Tassajara Hot Springs Retreat Center last summer, writing 4 articles, which you can see here, here, here and here, (whew!). Many of you expressed interest in going to Tassajara. Well, here's your opportunity. I will be there again this summer for the Healing Power of Stillness assisting Britt Fohrman
from July 21 to 26.  This would be a great time for you to come and you want to hang out with us!
