Mindfulness Meditation Taster with Jon Kabat-Zinn Meditation - Lots of Options

It you can think of it, there's an app for it.  That is true for mediation.  I didn't count them, but on at the Google Play Store, there were what seemed like hundreds.  I personally use the Insight Timer Meditation Timer but what about these apps:  Headspace and Relax & Meditation and Calm-Meditate, Sleep and Relax. There is Healing Meditation, Self-Esteem Meditations and 5-Minute Meditations.  Most of them are free.

Besides jumping in with the apps, let's look at a few "types" of meditation.  This list is not exhaustive, by far, but covers a few that you may have heard of or that I'm familiar with.

Mindfulness Based Meditation -  Developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn and the University of Massachusetts Medical School's Center for Mindfulness, Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), is about paying attention, on purpose, in the present moment, without judgment. You can start by just noticing bodily sensations like feeling yourself breathing, for example. The mind will wander, for sure (it's the nature of the mind).  Just go back to noticing, that's all. According to Mr. Kabat-Zinn (see video above), "[I]f the mind wanders 10,000 times, you know what's on your mind 10,000 times.  Without condemning, blaming, you come back to the breath."  Here's a helpful video from Mr. Kabat-Zinn.

Zen Meditation - Most of us have heard of this over-appropriated word. There are Zen spas, yoga studios, concerts, gardens, dogs, wallpaper and zen bars (yum, they resemble 7 layer cookie bars).  The "real" Zen refers to a school of Majayana Buddhism from China that eventually traveled to Japan via Vietnam and Korea. Zen meditation is referred to as zazen, the study of the self.  As compared to some of the other meditation techniques, sitting zazen is a bit more formal with eye open (gazing downward), hands folded at belly and a cross-legged seated position. Emphasis is on focusing on the breath or counting or repreating a mantra like sohum (like Aetna's CEO)   In formal sits, the practitioners face a wall. Locally, we have the San Francisco Zen Center with it's extended family, Green Gulch Farm and Tassajara Hot Springs, which offer formal practice periods for those preparing to become monks.

Guided Meditation -  You may have heard of or experienced meditation that suggests imagery, like walking through a forest and sitting by a stream or enjoying a winding path to the beach and watching the waves come/go.  Guided meditation is helpful to give your mind something to do and can be very relaxing. This type of meditation can be for a specific purpose or to produce a certain experience, like healing or self-improvement, or for just quieting the mind.

Loving Kindness Meditation -  Sharon Salzberg, meditation teacher and author, played an important role bringing meditation practices to the West, especially lovingkindness, which is the basis of her work.  Her website is rich with insights and instructions.  Lovingkindness meditation cultivates the qualities of compassion, sympathetic joy and equanimity.  In lovingkindness meditation unconditional love is offered to everyone, whether it is deserved or not.  Not restricted to friends and family, it begins with offering ourselves love and acceptance before it is extended to include others that we may know or may not know and eventually to all living things.  This is a beautiful meditation practice and one that I strive to do.  There are lovingkindness scripts to read  and to listen

I have only scratched the surface of meditation opportunities. The experience is different for everyone.  Try different approaches and see what resonates for you.  It's a practice and you don't have to get right all at once. But whatever you decide, approach your practice with a bit of ease, wonder, and curiosity.  It's you, inside.  Be caring and accepting of yourself and your efforts whatever they may be.

Finding Your Sweet Spot
I've been following The Greater Good Science Center and Christine Carter, Ph.D., a Senior Fellow who for many years worte it's parenting blog, Raising Happiness.  Her new book is Sweet Spot: How to Find Your Groove at Home and Work .  She had a great interview with Michael Krasny, KQED.  You can listen here
Yoga Crowds/Packed Classes
This week, The Wall Street Journal ran an article entitled "Namaste.  Now Get Away From my Mat."  Oh yes, it's true.  Classes can be packed, mats can be very close and sweat can fly.  Practicing in that tight of "community" can be invigorating or it can be gross and stuffy and possibly dangerous.  I've done it.  I like it.  I arrive early to get a spot and go out of my way to move my mat to accommodate a late-comer.  But, that's me.

Article is here.
Yoga and Meditation at Aetna
It gives me the tingles to see yoga and meditation in a "positive light" in mainstream outlets like the New York Times like Aetna's CEO offering employees free yoga and meditation and that over 13,000 have participated resulting in better sleep and more productivity.
This CEO's got Ganesha in his office!  What's this world coming to.  It's all here
Tassajara Hot Springs
I got a bit carried away in writing about my time at Tassajara Hot Springs Retreat Center last summer, writing 4 articles, which you can see here, here, here and here, (whew!). Many of you expressed interest in going to Tassajara. Well, here's your opportunity. I will be there again this summer for the Healing Power of Stillness assisting Britt Fohrman
from July 21 to 26.  This would be a great time for you to come and you want to hang out with us!
