Milk Does a Body Good? Maybe.
It dons your pumpkin, decaf latte and makes your Strauss Egg Nog oh-so creamy. It yums-up your smoothies and is essential for your afternoon-with-a-book cup of hot chocolate. Most people think it's the best source of calcium and the U.S. Department of Agriculture recommends at least 3 (yes, 3!) cups a day. It's milk. It might or might not do a body good.
Aside from the intolerancy of milk by certain individuals, milk is fourth most consumed beverage in the US behind, you guessed it, soda, bottled water and beer(!). Energy drinks are catching up. Consumption of milk is slowing falling as other beverages are catching up, like energy drinks.
Milk does provide health benefits, like sources for calcium, potassium, vitamin D and protein. Other sources, however, can be cheaper, more environmentally sustainable and more readily available. There are over 20 plant based foods that contain more calcium than milk on a pound for pound basis. And the calcium in these plants is actually more easily absorbed by our bodies (more bio available) than that in milk. There is more and better calcium from plants, like dark leafy greens, broccoli, kale, cabbage.
But, the bigger picture is why we would drink a substance that was made to grow a baby cow. No other species drinks the milk from another animal species and no animal drinks milk after it's been weaned. It is not natural for grown humans to consume what was meant for a baby cow.
Not only are we not meant to drink cows milk, the milk in your local Safeway or Costco is increasingly unhealthful due to modern farming methods. "There is enough evidence to prove that nearly all cows (unless raised by you or a farm you know well) are full of toxins, such as pesticides, antibiotics, bacteria and hormones." according to onegreenplanet.org.
The NYT last week presented lots of data regarding the lack of health benefits and bone-protecting properties of milk. Additionally, milk is not low in calories, and the recommended 3 cups a day can add 250 calories to the already bloated calorie intake. The article questions that "in an era when every caloric beverage is being marginalized because of obesity concerns, it's odd that milk continues to get a pass". Author, Aaron E. Carroll , tells his patients, "almost everything is perfectly good in moderation, milk included. . . . There's nothing wrong with a periodic glass because you like it. But there's very little evidence that most adults need it. There's also very little evidence that it's doing them much good." But wait! Coke's in the game. Coke? Yep. Coke is planning to introduce a new "premium milk" that will cost twice as much as "regular" milk. It'll be called Fairlife and it involves a filtering process that results in 30 percent less sugar and 50 percent more protein and no lactose. As reported at Jezebel.com, it's considered the "premiumisation of milk". Is this a good thing? One thing we do know is that it will be advertised to death. If you find this topic intriguing or if you'd like to know more, there are many sources on the internet. Below were a few that I used. Next week: Alternative "milks" and why milk is OK to drink. http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/291350 http://www.onegreenplanet.org/lifestyle/is-cows-milk-meant-for-human-consumption-part-1/ http://zerocarbonista.com/top-ten-food-choice-myths-busted/ http://www.procon.org/headline.php?headlineID=005116 http://www.onegreenplanet.org/vegan-food/dairy-lobby-cows-milk-calcium/ Want to read some of my past articles?. Yoga Clothing SwapYou know you've got odds and ends of yoga togs and books and mat carriers and CDs that have been laying around. Or, maybe you're in need of some yoga stuff but don't want to pay the $$$$ bucks for oh-so-precious Lulus. Maybe you'd just like to hang out with other yoga peeps and geek out about your newly acquired eka pada bakasana! It's happening at Liz Levy's studio, Alive Yoga, on December 13 from 1-3. But, bring your stuff early so it can be ready when the gates open. Why not bring a goodie to share too. Although it's called a swap, clothing will be priced super cheap, like $2-$7. And, best of all, money raised will go to The Ceres Project. |
 Gossip
We know about the concept of Right Speech. It means avoiding "1) False speech, 2) Tale-bearing speech, 3) Harsh speech, 4) Vain talk or gossip". Listening to Buddhist lecturer, Joseph Goldstein, via the dharma talk (on 11/19/14) at Dharmaseed.com, he was asked whether it was "unwholesome" or bad/wrong, I guess, to be a listener in a conversation that was filled with harsh speech or gossip and whether you remained and listened without objecting. What should you do in such situations? Good question, huh. What do you think? Answer is next week . . . . |
Foaming Soap
You know that new hand soap in the dispenser that foams? I thought it was just another gadgety thing, something to lure us into buying more stuff to use and discard. More plastic crap from China. But, wait, I was wrong. I really like it. It dishes out just the right amount of soap.
I buy in bulk, so when it came time to refill, I took my plastic bottle to Whole Foods and filled it with some yummy smelling hand soap. Oops, it does not work. Regular hand soap is too thick. So, I watered it down and voila!, it's perfect. It used half the amount of the soap and I can choose the soap I want, like EO's lavender hand soap.

 Buy from your Local Bookstore
I like to give books as holiday gifts. I know, everyone reads books on their i-devices, but still. I won't go into the virtues or evils of buying from Amazon (or Walmart or whatever). I will encourage you to get your books (or everything) from a local source. I know you can get 30% off books with Amazon and that they magically appear on your doorstep the next day. I do believe you can wait a couple of days while ordering it from your local bookstore, like Copperfields, or Keplers or Book Passages. Your bookstore can order any book you want, just like Amazon does. Any book.
Thank you, Tony Briggs, for your enthusiasm on this topic.

Statin UsersThis week's NYT reported on a new drug, ezetimibe, or Zetia, lowers cholesterol. Here's from the article: "For the first time since statins have been regularly used, a large study has found that another type of cholesterol-lowering drug can protect people from heart attacks and strokes.. . . The finding can help millions at high risk of heart attacks who cannot tolerate statins or do not respond to them sufficiently." Read about it here. |
