High Blood Pressure
(Pt 1

If you don't have it, you know someone who does.  And, I'm not talking about the U2's new album or a pre-order for the Apple 6.  It's about near epidemic that affects n

early 30% of adults aged 18 years of age and older in the U.S.--  high blood pressure or medically referred to as hypertension. No, not the hyper-tension you feel at the 49er/Dodgers game when you see your teen's latest tattoo.  It's the hyper-tension which refers to the excessive pressure on your artery walls.  This extra pressure happens when there is a narrowing of the blood vessels, but the heart is still pumping the same volume of blood.   It's like putting the same amount of water through a small garden hose versus a fatter one.  There will be more pressure on the sides of the small hose.

Over time this "high pressure" on your artery walls causes damage to the blood vessels and organs as well.  The higher the pressure and the longer it goes untreated, the more the damage.  Sometimes called the "silent killer" high blood pressure goes undetected because there are no symptoms.

Fortunately, high blood pressure is easily detected, as it often is when we get the "cuff" at the doctor's office or use the machine next to the pharmacy at the local CVS.  Without treatment, high blood pressure can lead to a heart attack, stroke, aneurysm and a lot more.

There are many factors whose combined effect contribute to high blood pressure, referred to as multifactorial.  Not all are lifestyle-based, but most are.

  • High salt intake or salt sensitivity.  This is often the elderly, African Americans, the obese or those with kidney problems.

  • Genetic predisposition.  If you have one or two parents with hypertension, you have about twice the indicence of having high blood pressure as compared to the general population

  • Stiffness or lack of elasticity in the arteries, from a particular abnormality. This stiffness develops in folks who are obese, lack exercise, have high salt intake, and are older.

If, like me, you have no idea what the 110/70 means, I'll try to explain it.  The cuff or sphygmomanometer has an air pump, a pressure gauge, and a rubber cuff. We've all seen it.  With the cuff on the upper arm, the nurse or "heath care practitioner" pumps the little black ball and the cuff tightens, it literally stops the flow of blood from the main artery that travels through the arm.  A round metal disk (cold, if I recall) is put on the inner elbow and the pressure in the cuff is slowly released. The nurse is listening with her x-ray hearing via the stethoscope to the point when the pulse begins again.  This is the top number or systolic pressure.  At some point, as the pressure on the cuff is decreased, the pulsation stops and this is the diastolic pressure (bottom number).  If your numbers are above 140/90, you're considered to have high blood pressure.  The docs consider a pressure of around 110/70 to be ideal.

There are ways to prevent high blood pressure.  If you have it, there are medications and lifestyle changes that can help bring it down. Specifically, the standard recommended Dietary Approach to Stop Hypertension (DASH) is offered for hypertension management.  Medications are considered safe and have few side effects.  Blood pressure medicines work in different ways --some remove extra fluid and salt from the body, others slow down the heartbeat or relax and widen blood vessels.

Blood Pressure Pt 2 - Reporting on CALM-BP, a program which includes lifestyle education regular exercise (yoga, qigong, walking, etc.), and stress management skills to combat high blood pressure.  AND, if you're taking your pressure at home, technique matters.

On Faith and Religion

I'm loving these Zen stories.  I found a site that list 10 of them and I'll share another one I found inspiring:

Several citizens ran into a hot argument about God and different religions, and each one could not agree to a common answer.

So they came to the Lord Buddha to find out what exactly God looks like.

The Buddha asked his disciples to get a large magnificent elephant and four blind men. He then brought the four blind to the elephant and told them to find out what the elephant would "look" like.

The first blind man touched the elephant leg and reported that it "looked" like a pillar. The second blind man touched the elephant tummy and said that an elephant was a wall. The third blind man touched the elephant ear and said that it was a piece of cloth. The fourth blind man held the elephant by the tail and described the elephant as a piece of rope. And all of them ran into a hot argument about the "appearance" of an elephant.

The Buddha asked the citizens: "Each blind man had touched the elephant but each of them gives a different description of the animal. Which answer is right?"

4200 Backbends!
We came, we conquered 70 backbends and we ate ice cream.  This can be said by 60 of us who attended Tony Brigg's 70th back-ending birthday bash.  I was there.  I survived.  As Tony puts it:

"Together you did over 4200 enthusiastic backbends in a little over two hours, and nobody burst into tears, nobody burst into flames."

There was admiration and respect for Tony from students new and old as we sang Happy Birthday To You "during" our last backbend.  After 3 hours, we were all worked up for the Three Twins Ice Cream guy who handed out all their delicious flavors.

Thanks to Renee the "keeper of the count"!

We're looking forward to 75, Tony!
Microwave Ovens.  Good/Bad?

I thought the argument was over, whether microwave ovens were OK to use.  They are so damn convenient it's had to justify not using one.  Me?  I don't own one.

Here's a bit from an recent article entitled "12 Facts About Microwaves That Should Forever Terminate Their Use".

"Are microwaves a benign bastion of convenience or a sinister contributor to biological and nutritional damage? A growing percentage of people are now heeding the advice of holistic health experts and disposing of their microwaves due to the dangers of microwaved food. Regardless of where you stand, humans are the only animals on the planet who destroy the nutritional value of their food before eating it, and the use of microwaves is no exception."

 Here's the rest.

Thanks, Deacon Carpenter, for the link.

Opening to Vulnerability
Relationships work to open us up to ourselves. But first we have to admit how much we don't want that to happen, because that means opening ourselves to vulnerability. Only then will we begin the true practice of letting ourselves experience all those feelings of vulnerability that we first came to practice to escape.
